Found this today:

http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/06/nvidia-kepler-roadmap-leak/

Could be completely bogus, and the info is conspicuously missing both the number of shaders and the amount of ram for each card.

Without specification of power consumption are these infos useless for me and a chip with a dimension of 550mm2 will need a lot of energy, also in 28nm.

Charlie put up a good overview of the swirling rumour mill.

For those not conversent with Charlie and SemiAccurate, he's not exactly NVidia's greatest fan for sure - then again in the last 4 years NVidia have handed him plenty of ammunition to play with - but he has been more right than wrong in the past. He raises the spectre of code embedding with game titles. Whilst - in particular NVidia - that was approaching a common pratice many years ago, its not been around for a while as such. Lets hope it doesnt get out of hand again.

In BOINCLand, such distortions of performance figures are not relavent in a games sense of course, and as always we need to await real world performance tests away from games titles, it'll soon show up then. But its a good heads up in case the initial marketing deluge focuses on games performance (as such).

Wait and see as they say.

Meanwhile, it is a good article if you have not seen it before.

Alot of us over at AnandTech doubted the LenzFire specs. Now we have some specs from 3dcenter that alot of us think are more believable.

I'm withholding judgment.

I heard the GTX 690 uses 700 W of power and produces 6 Tflops of single precision arithmetic.

That be terrible and disappointing result.
HD 7970 uses ~250W and produces ~4 TFLOPs.

A rash of specs started appearing the last 24 hours. Looks like hot clocks are back, contrary to rumors.

Sounds like an official nVidia announcement on the 12th.

This can't be true. I know it isn't CUDA, but I have more performance than that from my AMD 6990.

I'll wait until an official announcement. Based on the charts, it would appear that what's supposed to be comparable to the 7970 would be released at such a time (Q3 2012??) that AMD would easily be able to put out something better...

That and the 690 just looks ridiculous. I mean, it's totally feasible. But ridiculous. That and the fact these all use PCIe3.0 should be cause for serious thinking on the part of anyone who wants to buy a Kepler.

I understand it's backward compatible with PCIe2.1, but at what performance loss? One would need a PCIe3.0 mainboard in order to take advantage of everything these cards supposedly have to offer.

At any rate, I'm excited. My next build will have to be a Kepler-oriented system, so that also entails (I suppose) waiting on a new generation of processors as well. But that's another story.

You can find Acer Aspire TimelineU M3 (that has the GeForce GT 640M) reviews such as anandtech. Sure it is a laptop but provides a real idea of what to expect from Kepler!

The benchmarks and reviews are all coming in this morning. There are even cards for sale now. While the gaming benchmarks are impressive, there is one are of concern in context of GPGPU performance. I'll leave it to those much brighter than me to comment. The topic is hardware scheduling. Please read page 3 of AnandTech's reviews.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5699/nvidia-geforce-gtx-680-review/3

Based on the architectural change can we assume less impressive performance gains with this card in context of PG performance?

Are we moving in a direction where enthusiast cards are in fact optimized solely for gaming/video, and for compute, we're forced to use tesla's or some other quasi-tesla line of cards in the future?

I'm not certain Anandtech is drawing the correct conclusions. Or maybe they are. I guess we'll know when people start running them.

I do know that it seemed that the 400 series GPUs increased crunching power more than they did graphics power. All the benchmarks, for example, say that my GTX 460 should be inferior to my old GTX 280. But I saw a definite and significant increase in crunching speed with the 460. Perhaps the 600 series is emphasizing graphics performance a bit more.

THAT'S A GOOD THING.

Don't forget that it's gaming that drives the development of GPUs, not number crunching. We're just along for the ride. It's the eye candy that pays the bills.

Indeed gaming drives the industry for now. Evidence is that all the online outlets that I know of have sold out already. Page 17 of the Anandtech review points to some compute benchmarks. But I'm not sure how to interpret these results however, or if they're even relevant. Ok, who is going to take one for the team and buy a 680 and provide benchmarks?

Interesting that they did several compute benchmarks, but none of them were CUDA programs.

I guess we'll know soon enough. I'm sure someone here has one on order already.

In the comments section, it looks like someone said that they have a CUDA test that will be up some time later. Will be interesting, but for me here at PG, I think the biggest benefit will be reduced 400 and 500 series prices. Of course, the 680 isn't supposed to be the top NVidia card, just the first released...

Outstanding. Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep an eye out for those results. 500 series discounts are already rearing their heads. I was watching for newegg's product page for the 680. By the time I found it, they were sold out. Couldn't have been more than 5 minutes. I think the nextgen GK110 high end card will be very pricy. nVidia has already released drivers for 680. GPU-z already supports the 680 in it's latest release.

First things first: There's at least one person here already running a GTX 680. If there's one now, there will probably be more in the near future, so we'll be hearing about performance soon enough.

Generally speaking, Nvidia releases the top of the line, monster GPU *first* when they introduce a new line of GPUs. The x80 GPUs from Nvidia are their initial top of the line. Their usual release sequence is:

1) Top of the line x80 flagship GPU
2) Middle of the road "enthusiast" GPUs: x70, x60, x50
3) Bottom-end, "value" GPUs: x40, x30, x20

That's usually followed up by a gonzo dual GPU x95 or x90 card, and improved versions of the original cards such as an x85, x75, x75, xxx Ti, etc.

So the 680 IS their top of the line, flag-ship GPU, although it's reasonable to expect a dual GPU model to come out within the year, and an improved 685 model sometime later as well. But for the near future (6 months give or take), the 680 is the top of the line.

And like someone else said, even if CUDA performance isn't great in the 600s, it will drive down the prices on the 400s and 500s. Bargain-bin 580s wouldn't be a horrible thing. :)

Bargain-bin 580s wouldn't be a horrible thing. :)

I was excited about the 195W TDP on the 680. We'll wait to see the CUDA results. <Crossing fingers>

This doesn't look good.

This doesn't look good.

The only relevant chart there is the last one on the page, where it's comparing CUDA performance between the GTX 680 and the GTX 590.

In single precision, the 680 is slightly faster than the 590 -- but remember the 590 is a DUAL GPU card. If that benchmark is to be believed, the 680 is over twice as fast as one side of a 590 (which is an underclocked 580).

That's not bad at all.

What's bad is the double precision, which is less than half of the 590, meaning it's actually slower than the 580.

If those benchmarks are correct, that would seem to indicate a very significant increase in performance for our sieve applications.

Performance on Genefer -- well, we will have to wait and see. Although it's a double precision application, there's a lot of opcodes that get executed that aren't doing math calculations, so it's unclear whether the overall speed increase will compensate for the slower floating point.

The only relevant chart there is the last one on the page, where it's comparing CUDA performance between the GTX 680 and the GTX 590.

That's not bad at all.

Well, sort of...

The estimated GFLOPs for the 680 are just under double that for the 580, which is in line with that performance. However, the number of cuda cores are almost three times higher on the 680 compared to the 580. In other words, there is much less "bang per core" than Fermi.

At the very least, this will cause a lot of confusion for newbies as they enter GPGPU (i.e., my GTX460 has almost 100 more cores than a GTX280/285 and each core has more power than the GTX2xx series does, so it outperforms as expected. But my [future mid-range] Kepler card with 768 cores gets blown away by Fermi cards with 448/480/512 cores).

Yeah, this is especially troubling. My experience with Quadro 4000 cards is that the greater DP capabilities don't directly translate to speed increases (i.e., 1/2 of SP GLOPS for DP on Quadro vs. 1/8 SP GFLOPs for DP on 400/500 series comes no where near to those ratios in speed reduction). Still, they do account for a lot of performance.

The estimated GFLOPs for the 680 are just under double that for the 580, which is in line with that performance. However, the number of cuda cores are almost three times higher on the 680 compared to the 580. In other words, there is much less "bang per core" than Fermi.

From what I understand, that's to be expected -- and it's a good change.

Nvidia is going down the same path that AMD followed with their CPUs, Intel followed later with their Core2 (and subsequent) CPUs, and ATI followed with their GPUs. They've realized that faster clocks are not the way to go. You get killed on power consumption and cooling. Slower clocks with more parallel circuitry works better. Specifically, for the 600 series, I believe they did away with the separate shader clocks running at twice the core clock speed, so the shaders are running slower than before. But there's a lot more of them now, so overall performance is up significantly.

So, yes, if you just look at the number of shaders, you would think it should be faster than it actually is. There's a lot of architectural changes, and one of them is that each individual shader is slower.

I seriously doubt that the speed of Genefer will be helped by this. As far as sieves go, the performance may be great, but you don't need a high-end GPU to run the sieve applications. The Genefer world record tasks are another matter. I was hoping that the Keplers would help out there, but now I doubt that they will.

Just so everyone is aware, Nvidia intentionally cripples the double precision performance of their graphics cards, which is why the BOINC community prefers OpenCL apps so we can use AMD GPUs, which are many many times faster.

In the case of the GTX 680, double precision is reduced intentionally, to 1/24th the speed of single precision. The GTX 580 was intentionally reduced to 1/8th.

Nvidia began doing this starting with the 400 series.

The 680 is a very good, very powerful graphics card. However, for us folders, if you intend to do any projects requiring double precision, Nvidia is NOT the GPU you want.

And likewise, if you're a project dev and will need to use double precision in your apps, CUDA is not the way to go. OpenCL is. An AMD 7970 is about 6x faster in double precision than a GTX 680.

Because i'm only talking about double precision. Single precision and integer related apps run great on Nvidia. Also, i don't know if you were around when PrimeGrid made their first GPU app, but it was Nvidia only, and remained that way for quite awhile. And it was great. But it also did not require double precision :)

EDIT: also, you said "If that is true". There is no "if" lol it is a fact. Though don't take my word for it. Here is an article from Anandtech posted just yesterday telling people about it http://www.anandtech.com/print/5699 scroll down just a little to the chart and view the FP64 column.

Also, here is forum thread from Nvidia's own forums from 2 years ago where a couple dozen people, including me, argued about it for a week or more http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=164417&st=20

By design, Nvidia's GPUs will do double precision at half the speed of single precision. Combine this with the intentional 75% penalty on the GTX 580, and it operates at 1/8 speed. For the GTX 680, it is the same, except the penalty is now 1/12th, resulting in 1/24th double precision speed, meaning the 580 is in fact faster than the 680 at double precision. Any benchmark will show you this to be a fact, such as this one: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-680-review-benchmark,3161-14.html However, the 680 is much faster than the 580 at single precision and integer calculations.

Alternatively, the AMD 7970 does double precision at 1/4th single precision speed by design, however it is not crippled, resulting in a 6x increase over the GTX 680.

CW Sieve: gtx580 overclocked to 860MHz = 304s

Next will be some small Genefers.

edit: there doesn't appear to be any available, so that will have to wait.
edit edit: getting the same message for long tasks. Is there a problem with the new drivers?

Not an earth shattering improvement. Overclocked 570 will come close to that. Did you have the gpu turbo turned on btw?

I expect no big decrease in computation times for Genefer after checking the SP/DP-values at http://www.pcgameshardware.de/aid,873907:

Geforce GTX 680 Geforce GTX 580 Radeon HD 7970 SP 3.090 1.581 3.788 DP 258 198 947

DP = 1/12 SP for GTX680

DP = 1/4 SP for HD7970

nope, at least concerning chip-design.

check there: http://www.anandtech.com/print/5699

but the sheduler is acting differently, so probably the numbers are still standing.

You can run GFN at PRPNet. Or do manual tests of any desired values using PRPNet client package.

Since you CAN get sieve WUs, but can't get GFN, I don't think it's the driver.

I suspect it has something to do with your card being CC 3.0. For genefer, the server needs to make sure it only sends WUs to cards with CC 1.3 or greater. My guess would be on the server not understanding CC 3.0 and therefore not sending you work.

I'll bring this to Rytis's attention.

In the meantime, you don't need to run a WU to see how fast it is; there are benchmarks built into Genefer.

Find the genefercuda-windows.exe file in your boinc primegrid directory, or use the PRPNet version ONLY IF you have the latest PRPNET.

Run the following command line (do for both the 580 and 680 to compare the numbers):

genefercuda-windows.exe -b

Copy and paste the output and we'll all know exactly how the two cards compare.

Because this is a brand new device, the existing SHIFT settings may not be optimal for it. You should also run these two benchmarks on the 680, and post the results:

genefercuda-windows.exe -b2 19
genefercuda-windows.exe -b2 22

EDIT: I forgot to mention, and it's kind of obvious, but make sure you stop all other CUDA work while running the benchmarks or the results will be incorrect.

EDIT2: These benchmarks are more useful than actual WU times. Times can vary from WU to WU, so the benchmarks give you more consistent results.

Assuming that device 0 is the GTX 580 and device 1 is the GTX 680 -- that is BAD news.

The GTX 680 is substantially slower than the GTX 580, presumably due to the crippled floating point performance.

Were both GPUs running at stock clock speeds? (Just to make sure we're comparing apples to apples.)

That's not that much overclocking. Even when you take that into account, the 680 is still slower.

Silver lining: The 5xx and 4xx GPUs are going to drop in price. :)

Otherwise, this is horrendous.

indeed. given I've seen users on here with 570s running faster than my 580s I'm thinking I should exchange it for a pair of 570s.

It depends on what you want to do with it. It's the best thing for sieving, but for Genefer or LLR it's a step backwards. Or for any future GPU-based primality program, since they'll all probably use double precision floating point.

Some interesting things from last month:

The 680 shouldn't be compared to the 580, but the 560 Ti. The Big Chip is yet to come supposedly.

Interesting comparison in OpenCL...
OpenCL is not native for nVidia GPUs and a way slower than CUDA (in the past) but the SP/DP ratio remains about the same.

OpenCL is not native for nVidia GPUs and a way slower than CUDA (in the past) but the SP/DP ratio remains about the same.

Both Milky Way and Donate@Home use OpenCL for both AMD/ATI and nVidia now (with some other projects looking in that direction). When crunching my HD 5830 vs my GTX 460, on both projects nVidia is 3-4 times slower (longer). With the big push by both GPU companies toward OpenCL, it makes it look even worst in general for compute performance in the future for nVidia compared to AMD/ATI. If the 'Big chip' has a lot more DP cores built in, that then would make it (possibly a GTX 685?) a lot more respectable performance overall, even with OpenCL, but it still won't be as fast as AMD/ATI. Of coarse hand tuned CUDA apps will still be around, but there will be less of them since an OpenCL app is much easier to to build, as some here already know.

Next will be some small Genefers.

edit: there doesn't appear to be any available, so that will have to wait.

The "Big Chip" will have SP and DP performance 50% higher than the 680, assuming the same clock speed. DP will still be crippled at 1/24th so it's still basically worthless except for sieving.

Just so we understand exactly what we're missing out on here, the GTX 680 would have a DP speed of 1545 GFLOPS if uncrippled, which is about 40% faster than an HD 6990. The 580 would have 790.55 GFLOPS DP instead of the 197.64 we're "allowed" to use.

The Kepler DP floating point architecture is much different than Fermi's. The GK104 (the 680) is not crippled in the same way as Fermi. Kepler is DESIGNED with a limited number of FP64 CUDA cores. From AnandTech's article:

The other change coming from GF114 is the mysterious block #15, the CUDA FP64 block. In order to conserve die space while still offering FP64 capabilities on GF114, NVIDIA only made one of the three CUDA core blocks FP64 capable. In turn that block of CUDA cores could execute FP64 instructions at a rate of ¼ FP32 performance, which gave the SM a total FP64 throughput rate of 1/12th FP32. In GK104 none of the regular CUDA core blocks are FP64 capable; in its place we have what we’re calling the CUDA FP64 block.

The CUDA FP64 block contains 8 special CUDA cores that are not part of the general CUDA core count and are not in any of NVIDIA’s diagrams. These CUDA cores can only do and are only used for FP64 math. What's more, the CUDA FP64 block has a very special execution rate: 1/1 FP32. With only 8 CUDA cores in this block it takes NVIDIA 4 cycles to execute a whole warp, but each quarter of the warp is done at full speed as opposed to ½, ¼, or any other fractional speed that previous architectures have operated at. Altogether GK104’s FP64 performance is very low at only 1/24 FP32 (1/6 * ¼), but the mere existence of the CUDA FP64 block is quite interesting because it’s the very first time we’ve seen 1/1 FP32 execution speed. Big Kepler may not end up resembling GK104, but if it does then it may be an extremely potent FP64 processor if it’s built out of CUDA FP64 blocks.

NVidia needs a GPU chip with high DP capabilities for their Quadro and Tesla line, so the 'Big Chip' (GK100) NEEDS to have a lot more of these FP64 cores, and in turn they can partially cripple it and sell it as the TRUE successor to the 580 with possibly better DP performance, and A LOT better DP performance than the current 680. How much they might cripple it is unknown at this time (and probably right up to it's release), unless you know of a source somewhere. And if there was current info on it, it's still a ways off and things can change, as well as the info might not be true or accurate.
So a GeForce GK100 GPU 'could' be better at DP than the 580 if the same fraction is used, but it's unlikely. NVidia wants to sell more overpriced Pro cards instead. Then again they may surprise us.

10min on 680 = 5.62%,
10 min on 580 (10% overclock) = 7%

I've just checked again after just over an hour of processing and have found 2 interesting things.
1: I got the cards the wrong way around.
and 2: the gap is more or less the same as at the start at around 1%.

580 @ 1:13 - 47.2%
680 @ 1:13 - 48.2%

Go figure.

the numbers being tested are 197346^524288+1 and 199254^524288+1 but the cards are both in the same pc so I'm not sure which is which.

edit: worked it out. the smaller number is on the 580.

FYI, the difference in WU size due to the two different values of "B" only accounts for a 0.08% difference in expected run time, which is well below the noise level of any measurement.

Yes that is true, but crippled is crippled. The method doesn't matter much :)

And yes, since the GTX680 was originally supposed to have been a 670 Ti, there is a chance that "big kepler" won't be reduced to 1/24th, but either 1/16th or 1/8th instead.

If had to place a bet, i'd go with 1/16th. The reason is because the 560 Ti was reduced to 1/12th and the 680 (really a 670 Ti) was reduced by 1/24th, showing they decided to double the amount of crippling. If that trend continues, then "big kepler" would be 1/16th instead of 1/8th.

Also, i'm not sure how old that article is, but "big kepler" should be GK110, not GK100.

2 years ago when they began reducing the DP speed on the 400 series, we believed it was done in the GPU's BIOS so we tried to hack it in order to free up the processing power. However that wasn't the case. There's nothing that can be done. And now that the 680 is a physical crippling, it just drives that point home.

And don't bother crossing your fingers thinking Nvidia will allow full DP performance on any future GPU. They will never risk losing sales of their Tesla line. Ever. And to be honest i find it quite sad that people are suckered into paying $2500+ for a Tesla, when if they'd just use OpenCL in the first place, they could use that $2500 on AMD GPUs and get over twice the computational DP performance.

They'll still lose sales of their Tesla cards -- to ATI rather than to their own GeForce line.

Competition will eventually force them to offer better DP performance.

Is the 580 running your Windows display (with Aero on maybe)? If so, swap them and see if the difference reverses.

EDIT:
Actually, looking at your results, neither unit was completed by a single card. Something in the run stopped both of them and when they restarted, they swapped cards that they were running on.

Does BOINC call GeneferCUDA using "-device" option?

I still think it would be of benefit to run those test manually using GeneferCUDA and -devide option or use PRPNet server.

Does BOINC call GeneferCUDA using "-device" option?

Definitely:
genefercuda 2.3.0-0 (Windows x86 CUDA 3.2)
Copyright 2001-2003, Yves Gallot
Copyright 2009, Mark Rodenkirch, David Underbakke
Copyright 2010-2012, Shoichiro Yamada, Ken Brazier

Command line: projects/www.primegrid.com/primegrid_genefer_2_3_0_0_1.07_windows_intelx86__cuda32_13.exe -boinc -q 2160^4194304+1 --device 0

However, when a program starts and stops, it does *NOT* necessarily get reassigned by BOINC to the same GPU. In multiple CPU systems, it is typical to see a single WU bouncing from GPU to GPU every time the WU gets restarted. If those WUs were interrupted it's entirely possible the swapped GPUs.

This is particularly vexing on multi-GPU systems which have a mix of double precision and single precision GPUs, as BOINC isn't smart enough to send the Genefer WUs only to the double precision GPU unless the user fiddles with cc_config.

Anyway, looking at the two WUs in question, here's the 9800s task:

Command line: projects/www.primegrid.com/primegrid_genefer_2_3_0_0_1.07_windows_intelx86__cuda32_13.exe -boinc -q 197346^524288+1 --device 0

Command line: projects/www.primegrid.com/primegrid_genefer_2_3_0_0_1.07_windows_intelx86__cuda32_13.exe -boinc -q 197346^524288+1 --device 1

Here's the 880 second task:

Command line: projects/www.primegrid.com/primegrid_genefer_2_3_0_0_1.07_windows_intelx86__cuda32_13.exe -boinc -q 199254^524288+1 --device 1

Command line: projects/www.primegrid.com/primegrid_genefer_2_3_0_0_1.07_windows_intelx86__cuda32_13.exe -boinc -q 199254^524288+1 --device 0
Command line: projects/www.primegrid.com/primegrid_genefer_2_3_0_0_1.07_windows_intelx86__cuda32_13.exe -boinc -q 199254^524288+1 --device 0
Command line: projects/www.primegrid.com/primegrid_genefer_2_3_0_0_1.07_windows_intelx86__cuda32_13.exe -boinc -q 199254^524288+1 --device 0

As you can see, the tasks did, in fact, switch GPUs.

ok, I hadn't noticed that. The pause was done by me while working on something else. So the 9800s task spent most of its time on the 680 - the expected result.

EDIT:
Actually, looking at your results, neither unit was completed by a single card. Something in the run stopped both of them and when they restarted, they swapped cards that they were running on.

Scott, you beat us to the correct explanation! Unfortunately, edits don't mark a thread as new, so I missed it. I could have saved myself some typing. :(

(Yes, I think I actually did read your message in the three minute span between the original posting and the edit.)
