The single primes as a byproduct from the Sophie Germain Prime Search are reaching the end of their stay in the Top 5000 list. There's roughly 10-14 days left until they will no longer enter the list. This does not affect the overall search as the goal remains to find a Sophie Germain prime and/or a twin prime.

If you're still looking for your first reportable SGS single prime, now's the time to get it. The elusive Sophie Germain and twin primes are still at large so there remains a chance at finding one of them as well. :)

To run this project, simply select "Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR)" on your PrimeGrid preferences page.

Special Note

PPS prime reporting has been suspended as we enter into the final week of SGS singe primes. This is to allow SGS the greatest and last opportunity to make it into the Top 5000 list.

Once the 5000th threshold has passed for SGS primes, PPS prime submission will resume and the back-log created by this delay cleared. SGS is currently entering around the 4915th position. PPS is currently entering around 450th position so no worries about falling out anytime soon. ;)

Thank you for your patience.

Any optimalization of SGS work distribution in terms of n exponent?
It looks like higher n are no longer distributed...

From my recent primes:

Question, once the single SG primes are no longer top 5000 but the SG project is still up, will prime hits still be recorded on our list of primes and stats in PG?

Yes -- unless the rules have changed recently -- I show 1 TPS prime in my PG stats that never made the 5000 list

Special Note

PPS prime reporting has been suspended as we enter into the final week of SGS singe primes. ...[/b].

Once the 5000th threshold has passed for SGS primes, PPS prime submission will resume and the back-log created by this delay cleared. SGS is currently entering around the 4915th position. ...

The largest new SGS prime appears to have entered at the 4961st
postition, so we're waiting for another 39 top5000 primes; depending
perhaps upon whether there are larger SGS's among the next few.

An interesting case from among the primes submitted or modified
within the last 72 hours is a SGS submitted Sunday evening, which
entered at 4997! That's cutting things close, it's already down to
5014.

Looks like about 21 primes submitted/modified in the past 72 hours.
A large proportion are SGS's, and ones that are pending for any
length of time likely won't make the cut any longer ... the proportion
of SGS's may drop, as the window for hitting 4961st-to-5000th
narrows ... there are only eight (from the past 72 hours) above
200700-digits; that would be a considerably longer time, at a
rate of 8-per-3days, to fill 39 slots. Ah, the current SGS's being
bumped are most likely bumped by larger SGSs.

Hard for an amateur to tell whether John's "final week" estimate
is still on track. Meanwhile, over on PPS LLR, recent valid reports
are in 1.257M, still non-trivially under the 1.3M for switching to
smaller n's (if I'm recalling the sequence correctly). Looks like I
have a backlog of nine reports, so if the four people above me are
similarly active, SGS's are already past the top5000, except for
the reporting delay ...

25699660885155 is a latest reported at 4961
39916497305235 is at 4912 (next up in n=666666)
26100822040965 max k in progress, so we are far behind to fill the gap in k
(all for n=666666) in reasonable time.

I'm not so sure SGS primes will count when they are off the TOP5000 cliff...

This wu is annoying me, because I think it might be prime, but the double-checker has been showing as being "in progress" for about a day now; it's only one SGS wu, they only take about 18 minutes on my old-ish Core 2 Q8200. My account stats show 2 SGS primes, but when I click on the "2" link (if you know what I mean...) it only shows the one I discovered a while ago, which was obviously double-checked. So logic says that this is the 2nd prime, doesn't it? Or have I missed something, and there's just a backlog of... er, logging them? If that's the case then there's no problems at all. I suppose it'll just time out on the 28th for the double-checker anyway, and someone else will do it.

As far as I can see there is no reason to assume that unit is prime. Or that it isn't prime for that matter.

This guy has a queue of 100+ units at the moment, each one taking about 45 minutes. Processing that queue takes about 3 days.

As far as I can see there is no reason to assume that unit is prime.

Just that it appeared in my pending credit list at the same time as my 2nd prime got shown on my stats page, and has been there ever since, and still only one prime is logged. No big deal, just a little bit confusing. I suppose, again, time will tell...

Congrats BTW

SGS credit is fixed (13.91), except when a prime is found, when the credit doubles. You just have to look at the completed tasks and seek which one has 27 something credits to find the lucky one. I think that SGS WU's are cleaned very short after validation (two or three days, at most), so the search must be done soon enough...
AFAIK, you'll see the doubled credit after validation, but before the prime is reported and visible on the primes found list.

Hard for an amateur to tell whether John's "final week" estimate is still on track....

Comparing with the SGS Search Stats, we're not looking at n=666667 or
larger, just n=666666; and k bounded so that k*2^666666 + 1 has
exactly 200700 digits? Not sure how old the update is, but when this
Stats was taken, there were 22,919 tasks in progress, with k from
the min 25359364823145 up to a max of 26296032843045. That
range accounts for k = 25699... and k = 26100..., but not k = 399....

Looks like PrimeGrid is only reporting n=666666 and k's from
253... to 256... Checking the last of the list, 200700 ends at
4917, with the 4918th having 200701 digits. A whole bunch of
these 200700-digit primes have large k's and n just above 666666.
Looks like the largest from this current range is k = 25699660885155,
at 4964. Hmm, k from 1 to 41T; with the k = 39916... closer to 41T.
Yeah, 4915, but 200701-digits. So that's
evalf( log[10](26296000000000) + log[10](2^666666)); = 200699.8830

So is the part of the SGS search for top5000 primes that's about
to expire n = 666666 with exactly 200700-digits? With tasks being
distributed up to that max of k = 26.296T until the 5000th prime
has 200701-digits? If I'm following correctly here, it's not that
all possible k's run out, but that 200701 drops from 4916 to 4999.

Ah, but that's the upper range for k. The lower range matters too,
4990 to 4997 all have k = 25.3T, with 4989 having k = 25.4T. So
prime reports with 200701-or-more digits, and SGS primes with
k from 25.6T, say, pushes up the smallest k still giving a top5000
prime.

On the timing, the 10-14 days of the front-page note of Oct 20
works out to Oct 30 - Nov 4, so another week-or-so. Meanwhile,
I have two more PPS LLR hits, a backlog of 11 (all with n > 1M).
Seems like SGS will just go on to 200701 digits, either including
n = 666667's or k > 26.3T up to 41T. Isn't subsequent SGS still
OK for the top5000 for quite a bit more of the search stat range;
just PrimeGrid could move the ones that don't give top5000
primes over to PRPNet, optional for non-boinc people that don't
mind giving up the top5000 for a chance at the 200000+ digit
Twin or SG prime. Again the current records are just over 100000-digits
for Twins (just one pair) and under 80000-digits for SG's, so 200000+
is a huge jump; just a low chance of a hit, with no side benefit
of the top5000 list. -Bruce*

So you get a prime and it is not in the top 5000, so what it is still a hit!!

I would be happy to get any, Member since June 2009, prime score = 0.

I admit I have done a lot of sieves.

Good luck all, remember even it is not in top 5000 it is still a prime to celebtate.

PPS LLR has been good for primes in October -- someone mentioned 11 -- i have 6 so far -- they rank 400 to 700 in the 5000 list

Six is very good; I have three --- that's 3 for which I've gotten emails
"you've found a prime number". The 11 is my backlog of hits --- reports
of a prime found, but with prime submission suspended for PPS LLR, I just
don't know how many (if any!) I'm the initial finder, how many I'm the double-
checker. For sure that moves the location of the start of 200700-digit primes
down by 11, who gets the finder credit being non-relevant for the count.

Looks like you're about to switch from amethyst ("pink"?) to ruby. I was speculating
that there are four people with c. 11M or above in PPS LLR credit, and that --- if they're
currently actively running PPS LLR --- then they're likely to have more than 11
backlogged hits each, and that (in any case) there are sufficiently many backlogged
Proths to push the 200700-digit line below 5000, already. The admin view is that,
as you mention, these rank in 700 to 400, so that a week's delay in reporting
won't affect these being top5000 primes.

Sounds to me like 200700 isn't entirely critical; there are, or within a week-or-so,
will be SGS primes below the top5000, but this is a moving line --- and there will
next be 200701-digit primes within the SGS project search range in danger of
dropping below the 5000th spot. Like the very next day, after all of 200700 drops
below 5000, there are going to start being primes with 200701 digits that start
dropping below the 5000th prime. Including SGS primes from what would appear
to be the next most likely range for new SGS tasks.

Guess maybe this is an advance warning issue; we try to keep 200700-digit
SGS primes on the top5000 as long as possible, while contributors adjust to the
prospect that --- if all eligible k's for n=666666 up to 41T are sent out as tasks, the
smallest ones will no longer be top5000 primes. Suspending reporting of Proths
seems clearly to have delayed the time when this occurs, but there are other
PrimeGrid projects and other (non-boinc, non-PrimeGrid) projects still submitting
primes, so it is at most a brief delay. I'm still not clear on how one estimates
that another week-or-so is the critical time-frame, even with Proths, or more
precisely, the ones from PPS LLR, delayed. Sounds to me that the number of
PPS LLR's in October has a good chance of being 50-or-100-or-... short of what
we would have had if the backlog doesn't extend into early November. -Bruce*

I have 6 in total for the month 2 reported - 3 unknown & one as wingman (initial checker no show)that expires on Nov 1st--- I don't mind holding off on reporting but it would be nice to get a PM letting us know what we have sitting there. :)

Yeah, PPS are on hold, no big issue - they are safe to enter Top5000.

I'm pushing SGS lately, ~6500 tasks a day.
Today's 25756632727635 * 2^666666 - 1 entered 4964, so still pretty comfortable.

Bruce, it would be nice to push SGS to 41T. I don't this we will get there before slipping off TOP5000, even if PPS is on hold.

We can estimate around what T would last SGS entering TOP5000 be?

I was just looking, Scott has four in the past 72 hours; so not everyone
is getting their first top5000 prime from this SGS range! But I did also
see some with a first prime, a few others under 10 primes.

I find it hard to imagine that the sieve that came up with the n=666666 (plus a few)
search range couldn't be re-done with more recent hardware. If the object were
_really_ to find a record twin or Sophie, then 150000-digits would be better than
200000+ (with the current record at 100K, resp. 80K). We'd get a lot more primes
with a chance. If it's essential that the SGS candidates make the top5000 list,
then a new search with 300000-digits would keep contributors interested, still
with a chance (however marginal) of a twin or Sophie. Unless the search for
4-tuples without small factors depends upon properties of n? The current twin
appears to have come from n = 333333.

I spent several weeks pushing Proth up to n=666666, with all of those primes
having vanished long ago. I'm not sure that even n=666667 (also in the present
subproject status) will keep interest for long, 200701-digits won't last. Looks
like the current Proth range will hit n=1.3M, after which it is scheduled
to drop back to n=710K to 725K. That'll start producing primes at a much quicker
rate than n=1.26M; with perhaps not too long to the 5000th prime past
200710-digits. That is, the entire remaining SGS search range is due to lose
the interest attached to finding top5000 primes.

Hard to predict what computing people will find of interest. I expect to stay with
Proths for a while. -Bruce* (PPS LLR backlog: 14)

Since this original post 6 days ago, SGS single primes have gone from entering at 4915th position to ~4960th. While delaying PPS primes has helped, the inevitable is just around the corner. Ironically, we've seen the highest participation in SGS in a long time. Thank you to everyone participating.

As stated above, once the 5000th threshold has passed, PPS prime submission will be resumed and the back-log cleared.

SGS credit is fixed (13.91), except when a prime is found, when the credit doubles. You just have to look at the completed tasks and seek which one has 27 something credits to find the lucky one.

So this one: http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=220426516 is a prime but I haven't received an em from John - does that mean it's just missed the top 5000 I wonder?

So a prime that makes it to the top 5000 list has to have a discoverer and three verifiers (including the tests run by Chris Caldwell)??
I wasn't aware of that.
Pete

P.S. Should this debate be moved to the SGS Thread?

As far as I know its always been Primary check -- double check--- then to Chris Caldwell for a final (shows as an unverified prime on his page) check

Approximately, how many days it will take?

Hmm, hard to estimate...but Bruce have done some good calculations.
If I got it correct, we need to push to 26.296T and then higher k should outperform those of n=666667 with lower k.

We are now at 26.58T but prime validation/reporting takes a while.

My *feeling* is that as long as PPS is on hold with reporting and SGS reporting is not delayed, SGS is safe for now (considering it's high participation rate). On the other side, SGS primes are slipping of Top5000 just after 3 days...

From my today's primes, highest got position 4954 (26041062137055 * 2 ^ 666666 - 1).

We are now at 26.58T but prime validation/reporting takes a while.

SGS primes are currently being micromanaged. We have entered a phase where the leading edge still enters the Top 5000 (at ~4960) while the trailing edge does not.

The lowest current outstanding k for SGS is below the k of the 5000th prime, k=25582390441095. The gap between leading and trailing edges is ~1T. All primes on the leading edge will make the Top 5000 list...trailing edge primes will not. However, please be patient as we attempt to get as many of the trailing edge primes in as possible by slightly delaying some of the leading edge primes. To some, this is their first prime.

This is what is was suspecting - leading edge is delayed by ~ 0.5T (or 1 - 2 days)
It's fine for me to delay leading edge so that lower end can enter, especially if it is first prime for some participants.

How about PRPNet SGS? Those are entering 4830th and they can strech limits on trailing edge even farther. Would be good if those on PRPNet SGS switch to [main] PG SGS, even they are not so numerous.

Yes, full power on SGS!

How about PRPNet SGS? Those are entering 4830th and they can strech limits on trailing edge even farther.

PRPNet SGS is working from the top down. The sieve file was up to 41T. Therefore, PRPNet has processed 41T down to 39T at the moment. Leading edge there is not going up but coming down...currently about 4920th place. Had we been going up beyond 41T, it would have been a good idea. :)

SGS primes are currently being micromanaged. We have entered a phase where the leading edge still enters the Top 5000 (at ~4960) while the trailing edge does not.

I had a quiet think and realised that must be the case, i.e. my prime may be slightly larger than others waiting to go in the top 5000 and pushing my one on could cause a problem for some other ones.
Thanks John.

reported when I added SG. -Bruce*

I'd take a stab in the dark and say 4.5 to 5 days

In the last 4 days, 7 primes have been submitted above 200701 digits. It's a nice surprise...one that will allow more SGS primes to make the list.

If the average remains ~2 primes per day, the end could technically be pushed out by 20 days. However, I wouldn't count on it.

Question, once the single SG primes are no longer top 5000 but the SG project is still up, will prime hits still be recorded on our list of primes and stats in PG?

Yes -- unless the rules have changed recently -- I show 1 TPS prime in my PG stats that never made the 5000 list

Yes, this is correct. Although they will no longer make the Top 5000 list, they will still show up in PrimeGrid's prime stats.

Since the start of this thread (Oct 20th) primes reported (according to primes.utm.edu):
-37 SGS primes (ranging from 4931 to 5000)
-35 from other projects (higher in the ranking than SGS)

If this continues, it looks like SGS primes will still make it in the top 5000 for a while...

Yes... And this is getting quite frustrating to some people finding other primes like on PPS, which aren't validated anymore without any decent notice. I had to find out about this thread and the 2nd message in this thread on another forum.
Why not put a post in the PPS forum about the fact that the WU's aren't published anymore untill further notice? What is the exact date on which you stopped entering units for the top5000?
And I could understand that you halted other primes for a few days, but trying to lengthen this period by entering the smaller primes through micromanagement is really taking it a step to far.
I'd say November 1st is a nice date to end the SGS Primes entering the top5000. Empty the queue and also start working on the PPS backlog.

Just my 2 cents...

... and breathe...

No worries. I even took a few breaths while typing the above message ;)
But that still doesn't make it right that I have to find this kind of information on other fora ;)

I'd say November 1st is a nice date to end the SGS Primes entering the top5000. Empty the queue and also start working on the PPS backlog.

I agree!
I move for a vote (or referendum) on the subject!
PrimeGrid can only be run by the community and should therefore be regarded as a democracy ;-)
If the Greeks get the opportunity to vote to tank the European economy, why not the PG users on SGS's future...?

I'd be willing to vote for another week-or-two of PPS LLR suspension, with consideration
of an additional suspension if indicated by the progress. (And I have a _lot_ more
backlogged reports than either of you, not that it matters.)

In addition to considering current PPS LLR contributors, and current SGS contributors,
SGS has been running for several years, and we're still waiting for a twin prime
or Sophie (the primes we're reporting to the Top5000 are candidates, with one
of the four sieving survivors prime, but none of the other three, so far.). This extension,
and the suspension made by the PG admin, gives all of the SGS contributors over the
months of crunching just a little longer for the project to succeed. Progress seems
a not very likely prospect once 200700 falls off, effectively ending the project. By
contrast, Proth primes have years of productive crunching ahead; no problem there.

Perhaps I oughtn't to be adding my 2-cents here, as I've found another method for
not causing SGS to be bumped --- four days with no electricity at my university, due
to the October snow storm on the East coast of the US. Sounds like we may be
back up tomorrow, if I'm lucky. -Bruce* (lehigh.edu)

I vote for suspending PPS reporting and allowing the SGS primes to stay on the list until the 10th.

Disclosure: I'm the TPS project leader and hope that crunchers here will join the n=1M 48-hour twin/sophie rally on the 11th:

ROFL :) :)
Nah... I wouldn't call it a democracy :) It's not "our" project, we are just welcome to join in and the staff are the people that decide how & what :) We can give our input and it's up to them to see what they do with it :)

These are all from the new range (1200<k<10000).
Maybe somebody forgot to put a hold on reporting them...

Now I'm really confused ...
Yet new PPS extended primes have been reported
(9999*2^710115+1, 1469*2^710465+1, 5525*2^710471+1)
What's the logic behind blocking reporting of PPS primes (500<k<1200) and allowing PPS extended (1200<k<10000) to enter the top 5000 list.
Since both groups are bigger than SGS they have the same effect on them being pushed out...

Well, SGS... today's and latest one from PG at 27.20T:
4967 27201275967855*2^666666-1 200700 L1435
latest one from PRPNet at 39.91T:
4965 39916497305235*2^666666-1 200701 L989

Nothing much that could slip in between, only more SGS.
When PRPNet SGS fall-off TOP5000 (and it's also only matter of time), it does not get to TOP5000 nor is PG aware of it's PRPNet port primes so it does get to Top Prime Finders and score.

Quite a gap of 12.7T, that's about 1/2 of we have done fo far...perhaps another year to complete at previous pace or 3-4 months at current rate...or even less if it would have been Focus project.

I wonder what resource share each sub-project has...

The most recent 72 hours of reports to the Prime Pages lists 19 SGS
top5000 primes that have already fallen out of the top5000 --- less than
a 3-day's stay. Interesting note on PRPNet's SGS primes; I was wondering
where the 399's were coming from. I've just gotten my 3rd new hit from
SGS LLR ... guess maybe they're all pending; none have yet shown up as
DC reports. Suppose I may stick with SGS long enough to get the ruby, if
it's close after falling off of the top5000. -BD*

Still 19 SGS's that fell off of the top5000 in the most recent 72 hrs; but a
huge number of new SGS/boinc ---- 31 new top5000 prime reports (/72 hrs).
Suppose these are not unrelated; the new SGS/boinc reports are bumping
older ones.

As John reports elsewhere, the surprise here is how few the number of reports
of new primes at/above 200701 digits are (including PRPNet SGS's; as compared to
the Admin's expectation of that rate). Looks like 25 of those (/this 72 hrs), with
the largest SGS/boinc at 4971st, after entering at 4966th, some 15 hrs ago.
At this rate, our long wait for starting clearing the PPS LLR backlog would only be
another 4-5 days. Sounds like the variation in the rate of new prime reports
at/above 200701 is large, with a recent report suggesting another 3 weeks-or-so.

Well, for me, the wait has been long enough and the communication not good enough :) Sure.. it's up the the PG team to do whatever they want. But I just changed my settings in BOINC not to accept PG work anymore. :)

At this rate, our long wait for starting clearing the PPS LLR backlog would only be another 4-5 days.

This appears to be the case. Trailing edge primes are failing to make the Top 5000 while leading edge primes are entering ~4985. Primes are being submitted as they are validated, even before SG/twin testing is completed. Don't worry, it's easy to retro an SG/twin prime should one present itself.

[Update]
11 Nov: 4991
12 Nov: 4997

None of the three SGS/boinc primes submitted in the most recent 24 hours
remain in the top5000. Here's one that may have left before the contributor
got the email:
6967685262495 · 2^666668 - 1 ''' Submitted: 11/12/2011 16:03:55 CDT ... Removed (*): 11/12/2011 16:34:01 CDT

That was "entered at 4998". The largest one was
6990143197575 · 2^666668 - 1 ... entered: 4999 (current) rank: 5001 (digit rank is 3)

so two of the primes submitted more than 24 hours ago were larger
than these three (the 3rd being Scott's 6972678223245 · 2^666668 - 1).
Just two boinc/SGS remain on the top5000, with largest
219571067715 · 2^666673 - 1 ... Rank (*): 4999 (digit rank is 1) Entrance Rank (*): 4989

and the other
1747862763255 · 2^666670 - 1 ... Rank (*): 5000 (digit rank is 2) Entrance Rank (*): 4992

I'm not sure about the "tailing edge", as those don't get reported by
PrimeGrid to the Prime Pages (at least, none from the previous 72 hours).
Still, with two slots currently open for 700200-digit primes, we could see
a few more top5000 SGS/boinc primes, pending two more primes at
700201+ digits.

Perhaps we can hope for the PPS LLR backlog to start being cleared on
Monday?

looks like 25 pending hits to be distributed over primes and DC's)

SGS primes from BOINC are now beyond the Top 5000 list. Therefore, the PPS (LLR) backlog will soon be cleared. Thank you everyone for your patience.

[update] The backlog has been cleared. All primes have been submitted or new finders notified.

Question, once the single SG primes are no longer top 5000 but the SG project is still up, will prime hits still be recorded on our list of primes and stats in PG?

Yes, this is correct. Although they will no longer make the Top 5000 list, they will still show up in PrimeGrid's prime stats.

Well, about that "show up", "counts" etc.

Primes from SGS are seen in "Prime number list for participant" and counter of primes found is increasing.
But they do NOT count in Score by "Top Prime Finders" - at least this is my observation.

Please confirm/correct that behaviour and that it is intentional.

Badge score: 1*1 + 5*1 + 8*3 + 9*11 + 10*1 + 11*1 + 12*3 = 186
