WWWW Prime Search development

Every now and then, users submit new prime search ideas for PrimeGrid to investigate. This past spring, a special request came in for PrimeGrid to explore the following prime searches: Wall-Sun-Sun, Wieferich, Wilson or Wolstenholme.

Now that the summer break is over, we are beginning to investigate the logistics of this. Over the summer, Mark began to make updates to PRPNet to incorporate these new search forms. Additionally, he already had code for a couple of the searches and has now combined them into a single client program called wwww.

There are previous and/or ongoing searches for these forms. The effort at PrimeGrid will be at most a collaboration with any previous, current, or future effort. It is not our intention at this time to begin an independent search for any of these forms.

This thread is being opened now for additional software development with high expectations that it will follow the same path as the AP26 Search code development. Through community support and collaboration, the AP26 client software experienced tremendous speed increases including a port to the GPU. We hope to see the same with the wwww code.

Anyone wishing to contribute, please post in this thread or PM Mark (rogue).

I have some insider information regarding these projects.

Wieferich - Being done by wieferich@home. I have numerous gripes WRT how they run their project (bad stats, lack of knowing their search space, etc). I think that we could blow them away with better software (and coordination), but I'll leave them alone for now. I am also aware of another private search that will be starting soon. As I know the developer, starting a public PRPNet server is a possibility.

Wilson - A project is on-going over at mersenneforum. This requires a lot of memory to be efficient. I'm not interested in taking it on.

Wall-Sun-Sun - This would be a great search to take on. I have fast code for the search, but I think that GPU code would be killer. If someone is interested in writing OpenCL or CUDA code for this, please PM me.

Wolstenholme - Although there is no current search for this I do know of one person who is investigating a new algorithm for the search. I don't know if they will pursue a new search or not. If they do I don't know if they will open it up to PRPNet or do it privately. I will check in on that person in a couple of weeks or so.

It would be great to put sr5 into BOINC. I think there is no big advantage to integrate these new ones to PRPnet due lack of users. But TPS would be great as suggested in mersenne forum.

Wilson - A project is on-going over at mersenneforum. This requires a lot of memory to be efficient. I'm not interested in taking it on.

I noticed some months ago, that it is already ported at boinc for win, linux and mac by ibercivics. Also they have an alpha/beta cuda applicaton for linux. They run the search since beginning of 2011, but I did not know about any efforts.

You have the wrong project in mind. The one I'm speaking of is this: http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=16028. The one you are referring to is painfully slow.

For some things my PPC G5 could still keep pace with first gen Core 2 Duos. I think their decision was based more upon lack of IBM/Motorola support for future PPC processors. Although I didn't like it at the time, I think that for the long term, they made the right decision.

Hello !

Do you think that a .config file would help to increase the GPU Load for PPS Sieve or GFN WU's ? (Will try by myself, later ;) )

I am trying to optimise because I am currently "obliged" to run 2 WU's at once (PPS Sieve) in order to avoid a "sinusoidal / chaotic" GPU Load on my GTXs.

ie

verbose=1
items_per_kernel=21
kernels_per_reduction=9
threads=8
sleep=1
build_options=-Werror

I am sure you understand this language much better than I do.

On Collatz, I almost increased the speed/WU by 100 % using such .config file on CUDA WU's, as it optimises the GPU Load.

Thank You

Phil1966

EDIT: Since you asked in PSA thread, when using PRPNet, you need one instance per CPU/GPU thread so running 2 GPU tasks means running 2 instances.

For GFN, you can adjust block size via your preferences if needed.
Basically, this is to eliminate screen lag rather than boost extra performance.
And since GFN task are long one, you should see no change in GPU load.

Or you can tweak BOINC itself to run multiple task per GPU.
To change the number of tasks running per GPU, edit the app_info.xml with Notepad, and change each <count>1</count> to <count>0.5</count> for two tasks per GPU, or <count>0.33</count> for 3 tasks per GPU.
Using this approach, you can make BOINC running only 1 SoB task on CPU for example.

<app_config>
<app>
<name>name of the app</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.04</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>
