Over night, my quadcore Q6600, which is normally pretty reliable, started crunching 4 SoBs. One of them had a problem. The result is here.

The link shows the following sdterr output:

<core_client_version>6.10.58</core_client_version>

Runtime is around a minute and a half of elapsed time, and CPU time is about 20 seconds, which is expected because PRPNet was still running when this started up.

This is from the BOINC log file:

Now, a couple of things to note here....

The machine in question has 8 Gig of Ram, and 1 Terabyte of disk, with lots and lots of both free. It has 10 GB (not MB) of disk space allocated to BOINC, of which 9.80 GB of disk space is free. Whatever actually happened, it certainly did not run out of BOINC disk space.

Also significant is the _26 on the result name. If you look at the WU, nobody has completed it. There's been a few timeouts, but most have errored out within seconds of starting, just like mine. Back in the September to November time frame, the behavior was different; the errors occurred after a long period of time instead of a short period of time.

It looks like there's something wrong with this WU. Fortunately, the results seem to be borking after only a few seconds, so there wasn't much wasted effort. Considering the potential for wasted processing however (e.g., the poor sobs (pun intended) back in the fall that lost days of processing) perhaps this WU should be killed?

And while you're looking at that one, also take a look at this WU.

The one result in progress is mine and is one of the other three sent to my Q6600 last night.

Of interest here is that there are THREE results returned which did not validate against each other. I don't think I've ever seen that before. That means that at least two of the three computed correctly enough to complete the calculations, but still had errors causing the checksum to be wrong. Or there's something wrong with the WU. Odd. I guess I'll know in 10 days or so.

You can also add these two as well:
131796176
132478114 - getting a lot of disk usages errors

I was rather surprised because one of the hosts never had issues with SoBs before. That surprised me so I immediately upped by disk limits so my other SoBs don't do the same. But that is due to the sieve files for sieves that I am not currently running.

The starting date of the second WU you mentioned, the one also exhibiting disk errors, is the same date as when my failed WU was originally issued: September 28th. That's either one heck of a coincidence, or it's indicative of a bad batch of WUs. I suspect that some WUs were sent out with bad parameters.

I think it is the same WU. One poor person errored out after almost 29 days of crunching. He/She is no longer crunching for PG, I wonder if that is why . . .?

Those WUs were generated before LLR 3.8.4 was released. Old LLR binaries were much smaller (below 1 MiB) and rsc_disk_bound was set to 10,000,000 bytes (which is ~9.54 MiB).

The new LLR binaries are much larger (~25 MiB), so rsc_disk_bound is exceeded and BOINC will kill the WU as soon as it notices. :(

The new LLR binaries are much larger (~25 MiB), so rsc_disk_bound is exceeded and BOINC will kill the WU as soon as it notices. :(

If that's the case, then I suspect that all WU's that are still running from that time period are guaranteed to fail now. The only way they don't fail is if the host computer goes MIA and the result times out in 40 days instead of failing instantly.

Most of these are going to be SoBs, although there may be a few PSPs in this situation too.

Sounds like the admins are going to need to kill these and resubmit them, unless the disk limit can be changed. It's likely there's some where one valid result has already been returned, so killing them isn't a terribly desirable option.

I had this one 132770340. It somehow managed to get completed and validated by someone still running v5.11.
From this I'd presume that if you had V5.11 and used it to run these older tasks they wouldn't fail.

...or you adjust the value rsc_disk_bound to 50,000,000. ;)

Aaaaah, Murphy strikes :( We will try to change the limits on-server, but it won't affect tasks already sent out, only new resends coming out.

What's weird that BOINC doesn't kill them immediately - this does seem like a bug.

[update] OK, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be - a total of 25 workunits have been affected. I updated their limits.

Thanks for fixing them, Rytis.

Wouldn't it be great if one of those 25 turns out to be prime?

And you would be saying it could have been me!

Anyhow excellent work as it looks like those former WUs are to chugging along. Just (over) committed to get Proth prime's reach 666666 (March 20th would be great!) to do more SoBs now.

The four WUs above have successfully completed and validated! But no primes.
Hopefully the rest have or will get validated.
