As some will notice, the work units are now smaller and the application is now called primegen.

Has the project fundamentally changed from factoring to multiplying primes in an attempt to find the factors for RSA-768? Is there a difference from the previous application as to the approach?

The new "primegen" generates a prime number table that will be used again later to find the numbers. It will be a huge list of prime numbers and we need to do additional processing to find the numbers. And that list will fit all rsa numers, not only the 768.

PS. Rytis may come and correct me if i told you complete rubbish, but I hope I didn't... :D

Thanx for the update guys!

So I see the wu doesn't apear to be much smaller, but they do finish a LOT faster. So far it seems the traffic for PrimeGrid has also increased a LOT because of this. Is there any chance the wu will go back to taking as long to crunch as they used to? PrimeGrid is one of my favorite projects cause of the small wu/long crunch time. Also will the credit/day change in any way with the new version?

The workunits will go longer as we progress through the number space. This will be a gradual process, but, as we tested on chess960athome (they use our app for testing the server), in the number range of 10^15 a workunit that does the same job takes about 7 hours.

About the credits - there is now a quorum of two, and the average of returned results is granted. The credit should be about the same, just, you will have to wait a bit longer and not get it instantly - two results need to be returned to get credit.

Hey Rytis, thanx for your reply. I really like a project where the project admins are so active in the forums with the info and q&a!

I'm very glad to hear the wu will go longer. If the new app keeps running as sweet as it's running now, a lot more results will be coming from my TeAm (TeAm AnandTech) in the month of May.

@ Rytis
hi,
First time that i write in your forum
Well, i'm running Chess960 and indeed we are using primgen 5.12 (with short wus)
The problem (if problem) is with a Win9x machine :
we get sometimes or often wus with cpu time = 0

I looked carefully my wus and this is always the same thing :
- the wu seems to have difficulties to start (status running, cpu efficiency = 0, cpu time = 0 and % done = 0)
- suddenly the wu jumps at % done : ~ 45 % (on my machine -> Barton 2800+) but with a cpu time = 0, status running and cpu efficiency = 0
- then i see the real cpu time, a new % (near the end)

but finally
- cpu time = 0, % done 100

some screenshoots will help to understand (wu 4935)

But some wus are running correctly, like this one (wu 3817)

I would like to understand.

I have no idea about this. Might be caused by win9x, but I can't test to confirm - I have no machine with old Windows.

Oh, and chess 5.12 is actually the same 5.11, just having some extra debug information to solve the crash in the end.

Your Win9x crunchers have also the same problem.
So perhaps you can find a Win9x machine or try a dual boot ;)
Note also that the problem is not the cpu (Amd or Intel) or the CC.

The problem is between your application and Win9x.
Well, if "Forced checkpointing (nearing buffer overflow)" is written twice, every time the cpu time = 0 (?)

I have a computer with Win98 (CPU is Intel Celeron 1GHz). And Primegrid has the same problem.
http://www.primegrid.com/orig/results.php?hostid=6532

There is a difference between "good" WU and a "bad" WU (with zero CPU time).

CPU time: 0
http://www.primegrid.com/orig/result.php?resultid=1055822

APP: primegen 200604261710: starting, argc 3
Iterations: 100000
APP: graphics not enabled.
Resolved output filename: ../../projects/www.primegrid.com/primegen_88464_0.out
Will init yacas now.
Offset: 8846400000
Will start actual work.

--->Forced checkpointing (nearing buffer overflow)...
Resetting checkpoint buffer...
Writing restart file...
Checkpoint done<-- this is repeated many times

Computation finished, writing final information... done

A "good" WU:
http://www.primegrid.com/orig/result.php?resultid=1055809

APP: primegen 200604261710: starting, argc 3
Iterations: 100000
APP: graphics not enabled.
Resolved output filename: ../../projects/www.primegrid.com/primegen_88457_1.out
Will init yacas now.
Offset: 8845700000
Will start actual work.
-->Forced checkpointing (nearing buffer overflow)...
Resetting checkpoint buffer...
Writing restart file...
Checkpoint done<-- this is repeated less times than with a "bad" wu.

-->Writing restart file...
Checkpointing...
Resetting checkpoint buffer...
Writing restart file...
Checkpoint done<-- Something new. This is also repeated

Computation finished, writing final information... done

The FAQ's first question says we're working on a 193-digit number, but that would mean we're working on RSA-640 which has already been successfully factored. Is that right? This thread suggests we're working on RSA-768 (and the primes will help with others). If that's right, then the FAQ should reflect that we're working on a 232 digit number instead. (And if that's right, why did we skip the RSA challenge in-between 640 and 768?

The FAQ should be updated, but I don't have much time for doing that (the exams are pressing).

We are currently not working on any specific of RSA numbers, the process we are involved in now (generating prime number list) may equally help to find the numbers in any of RSA prime factorization challenges.

HI

I know that this thread has practically died, but I think it is about time we get a new application, one in which the program does not collect factors of its own, and just does the same at iteration+99999 as it does at iteration+1... did I just make myself clear? Why I'm writing this wish is because I'm starting to get a bit tired of seeing WU take 5-10 times longer than they indeed needs to take.

So Rytis is it posible to get the application to run just as fast in the end of a WU as in the starting of a WU? If load on the server gets a problem, I think with a faster application, you without trouble should be able to extend the WU from 100 000 iterations to 1 000 000 iterations, is this a great idea or what?

Cheers everyone!

The speed decrease is in the computational library we are using, YACAS. I know there has been released a new version, just I don't have time to compile it (it needs modifications to compile successfully). I will probably get to this after BOINC Workshop (I'm leaving to Germany this Sunday, will be going to Geneva on Tuesday, back to Germany on Thursday, and back home to Lithuania on Saturday - being at home on the next Sunday).

OK, have a very nice trip my friend, and let me say that I'm looking very much forward to this new and increased speed. Also may I add, will it be possible to make some statistics on how many primes each individual has found? Like we know it with the factors found from RieselSieve project.

Thanks!

Ps. Also have you concidered what your next move will be, once you have compiled a new and faster version - will it be to make the WU longer or to allow more WU a day than the 150 maybe 550 a day?

I'm not sure, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I would like to leave the same WU length but increase the quota - I would have to update a lot of my scripts if I change WU length.

But first let's make that app :)

[edit] I forgot the P.S. :)
It could be possible to do, but the record of previously found primes is no longer associated with a specific user (think of DB size). Besides, every WU is crunched by two (or three) users. How should we count the primes? Divide the total by WU number?

I think it's better not to do skewed stats.

I understand Rytis, and I wouldn't ask for that much of your time, and beside youre right, let's make the app, and then we can start working on any other ideas we have, beside I think it is of a much higher priority to have a screensaver than other kind of stats than those we have now.

Regards!

Any news on a new and faster application?

I really wanna come back when I've completed the work that I owe to TPS and 321, so now I'm just curious if you have a timeframe for a new and faster app, one which don't collect various kind of factors :)

Also (know it is the wrong thread), but is there any progress on the screensaver, and what is the basic idea on what the screensaver will be showing?

Regards!

Sadly, new YACAS did not bring the speed increase that I was hoping for. So we're stuck with this app for now.

As for the screensaver, I had a chat with Eric Myers from Pirates, and it turned out he was working on a very similar screensaver to what I planned. So I'll be getting the code when he's done. For concept art, see the sticky thread in the top of the thread list.

That was sad, but hey one bad news never comes without a good one to follow :) Glad you maybe save some time on the screensaver, no matter what, I'll rejoin your project within the next two weeks, and then let my machine crunch for your project at least untill you reach 1,000,000,000,000 or I'm no longer behind an internet connection of any kind :)
