I posted this on the C/W subforum, but then I realized that it would be better to post it here.
Yesterday I joined the C/W prime search. After 8 hours of crunching, 4.697% is done!!? I fear that I am not going to finish till deadline, which is the 11th of February.
I am running OS X 10.4 server (10.4.11), and it is always on, just for this task. I configured it so that it will never sleep, 100% of both cpus is utilized. When I look at the process table I see that about 85% of time is spent nice-ing the process, instead of crunching the primes (blue color instead of green, if that helps).
Please help me solve this issue. I really want to participate in this project, and I think that my old Powermac is still not too old for this. After all, I was computing gaussian integers and twin primes on it and it performed in pair (when the application was optimized for the G4) with much "faster" and newer computers.
Thanks for your answers!
