Welcome to the Year of the Rabbit Challenge
You know what they say about rabbits? Well, we hope it's the same for primes during this Challenge. :D Come join us as we propagate the Top 5000 list with a litter of kits….I mean, a bunch of primes! It's a GREAT opportunity for you to find a prime for yourself! Who knows, there may even be the rare Fermat number divisor. :)
A 3 day Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's Proth Prime Search (LLR) application.
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Proth Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 3 February 2011 18:00 UTC and end 6 February 2011 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux 32 bit, Windows 32 bit and MacIntel. These applications will be sent to 64 bit clients. As with all LLR application projects, there is no advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit.
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~5 minutes on fast/newer computers and 15+ minutes on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)
Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.
Time zone converter:
The World Clock - Time Zone Converter
NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.
Scoring Information
Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 3 February 2011 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 6 February 2011 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will use the "prime score" method which is based on the n value (k*b^n-1) to score the challenge. The only difference is that the primary and double checker of a WU will receive the same score.
Therefore, each completed WU will earn a unique score based on its n value. The higher the n, the higher the score. This is different than BOINC cobblestones! A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.
For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.
At the Conclusion of the Challenge
We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.
ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.
Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)
About the Proth Prime Search
The Proth Prime Search is done in collaboration with the Proth Search project. This search looks for primes in the form of k*2^n+1. With the condition 2^n > k, these are often called Proth primes. This project also has the added bonus of possibly finding factors of "classical" Fermat numbers or Generalized Fermat numbers. As this requires PrimeFormGW (PFGW) (a primality-testing program), once PrimeGrid finds a prime, it is then tested on PrimeGrid's servers for divisibility.
Proth Search only searches for k<1200. PrimeGrid created an extension to that which includes all candidates 1200<k<10000 for n<5M. It is this extension which we call PPSE that the Challenge will be on.
Initially, PrimeGrid's PPS project's goal was to double check all previous work up to n=500K for odd k<1200 and to fill in any gaps that were missed. We have accomplished that now and have increased it to n=900K. PG's LLRNet searched up to n=200,000 and found several missed primes in previously searched ranges. Although primes that small did not make it into the Top 5000 Primes database, the work was still important as it may have led to new factors for "classical" Fermat numbers or Generalized Fermat numbers. While there are many GFN factors, currently there are only about 275 "classical" Fermat number factors known. Current primes found in PPS definitely make it into the Top 5000 Primes database.
Once the 900K goal is reached, we will head to 1M before turning our focus to smaller k values and higher n values. For example, k<300 complete to n=2M, k<600 complete to n=1.5M and so on.
Additional Proth prime testing can be found in PrimeGrid's PRPNet's. Current ports available are:

About Proth Search
The Proth Search project was established in 1998 by Ray Ballinger and Wilfrid Keller to coordinate a distributed effort to find Proth primes (primes of the form k*2^n+1) for k < 300. Ray was interested in finding primes while Wilfrid was interested in finding divisors of Fermat number. Since that time it has expanded to include k < 1200. Mark Rodenkirch (aka rogue) has been helping Ray keep the website up to date for the past few years.
Early in 2008, PrimeGrid and Proth Search teamed up to provide a software managed distributed effort to the search. Although it might appear that PrimeGrid is duplicating some of the Proth Search effort by re-doing some ranges, few ranges on Proth Search were ever double-checked. This has resulted in PrimeGrid finding primes that were missed by previous searchers. By the end of 2008, all new primes found by PrimeGrid were eligible for inclusion in Chris Caldwell's Prime Pages Top 5000. Sometime in 2009, over 90% of the tests handed out by PrimeGrid were numbers that have never been tested.
PrimeGrid intends to continue the search indefinitely for Proth primes.
What is LLR?
The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2^n − 1, with 2^n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penne that can run the LLR-tests. It includes the Proth test to perform +1 tests and PRP to test non base 2 numbers. See also:

They usually parse out the WUs at the start so the hits on the server are not too severe. You may see some delay at getting your first units as a result. Lst time around the server(s) did quite well IMHO.

Being fairly new to this a quick question. The scoring is limited to the PPS LLR on Primegrid only or does it also include the PPSE primes found on PRPNET?

It is a boinc challenge, so PRPNet workunits doesn´t count.
On PRPNet there will be special challenges just for fun ...

Well that's what I figured but since John had included PRPNet in his description of prime finding I was just wondering.

The way I read the post from John, was that you can also do PRPNet on the 3 ports mentioned in his post but you will have to wait for a month to get your credits.
The Boinc set up just gets your results a lot quicker.

Was choosing the first challenge as an LLR the right one seeing that we will not have a BOINC wrapper for the new app under windows?
Surely we could have made it a sieve, say 321 seeing that it's coming to end shortly?

I got an explanation and I think the 3 day challenge does not include prrpnet but the month long prime tour does.
Thanks

FYI...PPS (Sieve) tasks have been doubled in preparation for the Challenge. This will help lower the load on the server as well as reduce the size of the DB.

You both missed the point...only PPS LLR is checked so that CPUs will get those while the "work from other projects..." is selected so that the GPUs do not sit idle. However, all sorts of non-PPS LLR apps are loading to the CPUs as well.
I agree with Pooh Bear...very frustrating.

I have seen this as well. Ended up moving my GPUs off primegrid during the challenge.
This is probably due to the server being unable to maintain enough PPS LLR work (i e the work queue is empty from time to time).

I have too many PCs (some at remote locations) to easily use the app_info fixes. I also already use the various location settings (e.g., home, work, etc.) to manage things as needed (e.g., turning off ATI GPU in one setting for non-OpenCL capable cards and turning on in another).

We are working with project weights right now to find a good mix. Please let us know if conditions improve. If not, then we might not have a solution to this...Snf*'s suggestion of moving GPU's off PG during the Challenge could be the only solution. However, we hope that improved project weights works.

OK, that's good for now. However, at Challenge start, I can guarantee that the server will be stressed. You might want to get a good GPU cache built up and turn off "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" for the start...and until work demand has been met. However, be prepared to switch the GPU's to another project just in case.

Hi John,
This has become more of an issue since double-length work units are being sent. If you get on of those puppies assigned to a CPU it will be tied up for hours.
Tweaking project weights may help a little, the only real fix will be if/when either PG or Berkeley find a way to select subprojects specifically for CPU only or GPU only. Then the “Send work from any subproject” option could remain unused on GPU hosts.
Suggestions have been made to break out GPU capable subprojects into entirely separate sub categories. For example under Preferences could be:
PPS Sieve (CPU)
PPS Sieve (GPU)
GCW Sieve (CPU)
GCW Sieve (GPU)
In other words, treat them each as if they were unrelated projects. If you want both then check both.
Your server is already testing if a request from a host is for GPU or CPU. If needed you could maintain separate queues on your server for each type. You could even issue longer WU’s to GPUs and shorter ones for CPUs.
Scores could be combined (or not) for badges and for third party stats site export.
I know this could not be done in time for this challenge, but could it be done at all later? Just my 2c worth. Thanks for lending me your ear.

Suggestions have been made to break out GPU capable subprojects into entirely separate sub categories.
Yes, this suggestion has been made numerous times. While the split project approach is a solution, it is messy and not one we wish to tackle at this time. The practical solution is to provide a CPU and GPU option for each subproject. However, our repeated requests to Berkeley have fallen on unsympathetic ears.
Currently, I believe PrimeGrid is alone with this dilemma; thus the lack of motivation at Berkeley. Anyone wish to stoke some fires??? :) If someone can provide a viable hack into the BOINC server code to allow for CPU and GPU options, we'd definitely look at it.

Isn't it about time to update the Challenge Series page? With less than 2 hrs to go into the first 2011 challenge, the page still shows just the 2010 results...
It just might result in less crunchers knowing about the challenge..., unless that is of no concern, of course. :-) |

How to Join the Challenge
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Proth Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 3 February 2011 18:00 UTC and end 6 February 2011 18:00 UTC. Only work units issued AFTER 3 February 2011 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 6 February 2011 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit.
Application builds are available for the following:
- Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
- Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
- Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel
Note: 32bit applications sent to 64bit hosts
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~5 minutes on fast/newer computers and 15+ minutes on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. :)

A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.
For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.
Stats will be available on the front page next to the timer within 30 minutes after the start.
What to expect at Challenge start
The server always gets hit hard at the beginning of the Challenge. However, we will be using the same procedure that we've used for the past three years which has been very successful. A few hours before the start (3 February 2011 18:00 UTC) "max cache" will be dropped. Additionally, "max to send" will be dropped. Anyone attempting to request more will be met with "max cache" messages.
We'll raise the front page buffer before the start of the Challenge. These settings will be adjusted as necessary. Afterwards, as conditions allow, we'll raise "max cache". We'll continue to increase "max cache" when the server can handle it.
This method allows the greatest opportunity for the most clients to get work. Even if it's just 1 task for the first few minutes, at least the client is crunching. Past Challenges have shown that clients have an excellent chance to reach "max cache" before their first task is complete. We expect the same this time.
Strategies for starting the Challenge
Depending on a variety of factors, different strategies work for different users. Here are just a few to consider:
- large farm, user can be present at start
-Set Computer is connected to the Internet about every to 0 days
-Set Maintain enough work for an additional to 0 days
-Change PrimeGrid preferences and only select PPS LLR project
-At worse, you'll only be 1 WU late on each core starting the Challenge.
-After all machines have work, increase Maintain enough work for an additional
- large farm, user NOT able to be present at start
-Same settings as above.
-At worse, you'll only be 1 WU late on each core starting the Challenge.
- a few computers, user can be present at start
-Change PrimeGrid preferences and only select PPS LLR project
-Set computers to "No New Tasks" for PrimeGrid
-At Challenge Start, update computers to "Allow New Tasks"
- a few computers, user NOT able to be present at start
-Set Computer is connected to the Internet about every to 0 days
-Set Maintain enough work for an additional to 0 days
-Change PrimeGrid preferences and only select PPS LLR project
-At worse, you'll only be 1 WU late on each core starting the Challenge.
NOTE: This presumes you have all other BOINC projects suspended.
Best of Luck to everyone!

1 hour to go!!!
Please once again review the "Welcome" post as well as the "How to Join" post so you can be informed and make any last minute adjustments that are necessary.
An hour before the Challenge, we begin to monitor the Meebo chat room at the bottom of the forum page. If at any time PrimeGrid becomes unresponsive, you can still access the Meebo chat room externally here: http://www.meebo.com/room/primegrid/
Before the start, the Subproject stats on the Server Status page will be disabled as will the 24 hour stats on the bottom of the front page. Also, the Top Primes Finder page will be disabled. This is all done to free up as much resources as possible to allow the server to send and receive work. With these short WU's and the increased competition, we expect a very high volume at start.
Stats will be available on the front page next to the clock within 30 minutes after the start.
BOINCstats provides hourly updates of Project Challenges. There you can view user and team credit and ranking trends.

The Challenge has begun, but first you must answer these three questions before you cross the bridge of primes. What is your name? What is your quest? What is the name of the prime where k=n?
Best of Luck to everyone!

Currently, I believe PrimeGrid is alone with this dilemma; thus the lack of motivation at Berkeley. Anyone wish to stoke some fires??? :) If someone can provide a viable hack into the BOINC server code to allow for CPU and GPU options, we'd definitely look at it.
Einstein@Home has an option called "Run CPU versions of applications for which GPU versions are available". Maybe they can share their code as this should solve most of the problems here.

Well I did get up at 5.20 AM to start this challenge but BOINC has let me down very badly. I suspended SoB work on three computers, turned off GPU requests so only CPU work would come in. Then I waited. One computer got work and started to crunch, a second then got a couple of WUs,
My other two (who have the most suspended tasks on them) have refused to request work for over 2 hours, hitting update does not work.
The Windows machine had stopped requesting GPU work late yesterday and would not request any more, so I turned on Milkyway.
The Linux machine wont ask for work either.
Not wanting to do a reset with my SoBs at 50% to 80% I decided that I will just un-suspend everything and let BOINC go on its merry way.
So I will not be doing as much Proth LLR work as I had hoped as I just can't get any work.
My other Linux machine has now run out and has taken 10 minutes to get more work but that could be due to Server overload.
I will wait, its a three day challenge so I can still get work maybe later today when I will try again.

It's running...but it might as well be turned off for the amount of work it's being allowed to do. The load is simply too high for it to validate much.

Thanks Ian,
I came home at lunch time to try this but it is a waste of time.
BM refuses to request work even on computers with just 1 task on it.
I should not have "upgraded" to 6.10.58 as I had no such problems with 6.10.43, now it is all screwed up.
Gotta go back to work but will check when I get home and if nothing has changed (I have left all SoBs running) then I will just forget the challenge and finish the SoBs and then process another project that just might send me some work.

Has the Project turned off ppsieve work fetching ??? My GPU's are starting to Suck Wind. So far the Challenge has been one big errrrrr I won't even go there ... lol
Gotta go back to work but will check when I get home and if nothing has changed (I have left all SoBs running) then I will just forget the challenge and finish the SoBs and then process another project that just might send me some work
Same thing here Conan, my Box's with SOB's on them refuse to fetch PPS LLR Wu's, or much of anything else for that matter. No problem getting Wu's I didn't call for or even have selected though. Somehow the Project decided I needed some TRP's & SGS's over night ...

I disabled PPS Sieve work fetch but my Windows computer with the SoB's on it will only request GPU work, which of course it wont get.
So that computer is only crunching Prime Sierpinski and SoB work units. I had to abort 3 Sierpinski WUs as they will not finish in time.
In the older versions of the Boinc Manager I was able to suspend work units and still be able to request more work, usually of a different project without an issue.
This new 6.10.58 is a bit of a pain as you can't suspend and also request work, just not going to happen.
And to just sit there not requesting work when NO WUs are on the computer is really stupid and a waste of resources.
Plus on Linux you are not able to select a range of work units to abort if you got too many, you have abort one at a time.
Another problem I am now having on my slowest Opteron computer is because all the work units are now longer, it downloaded them as if they were shorter.
Now it is running in Panic mode trying to finish dozens of work units by the 6th.
Oh the joys of BOINC.

The Box's I have running SOB Wu's should Call for PPS Wu's, the Deadlines for the SOB's is 30-40 Days away so they have plenty of time to finish. Even a smalll trickle of PPS's would be better than nothing but 4-5 Box's won't call for any PPS's while 2 other Box's with SOB's on them have called for and are running the PPS's ahead of the SOB's because of their shorter Deadlines.
All the Box's have the same BOINC Client & Operating System & are set to the same Preferences in my Account so they should work the same one would think ...

Make sure Preferences will send only PPS.
On each machine, make sure any Project oher than PG is set to No New Tasks.
Make sure all PG tasks are Resumed -- No Suspends allowed.
Set local (each machine) Network cache to 10 days.
SoB WUs should go to Waiting while PPS WUs download and run High Priority (or maybe just Run, depends on what else is there).
I did not even need to suspend SoB WUs, Boinc 6.10.58 put them into Waiting and is Running PPS.
Worked for both of my computers.

I had a similar problem as Steve* overnight in that I for some reason got a PSP LLR unit. Sadly this ran for several hours before I saw it this morning so I don't want to abort it. Don't know why I got it; maybe the server ran dry of challenge tasks temporarily or maybe it is just dyslexic :-)
Anyway I used the procedure outlined by Murphy to get more PPS tasks and have had the PSP task suspended for a while. Unfortunately I won't be around to micromanage things for the rest of the day so I'm going to resume the PSP task and just be down 1 core on the challenge for a while. That's better than letting things run dry. At least for the short term the PPS tasks are in panic mode, keeping the PSP guy on the sidelines.

Well in the current situation, I would like to suspend some work units that have a due date in March so I can run work units from the PPS LLR challenge which have a due date in 3 days.
Or another situation that I have done in the past was with Climate Prediction for the same reason, so I could run another project on all cores for a short while before going back to the Climate WU.
There are a number of reasons why I would like more work and suspend current work, just 2 examples above.
If I wanted to do short tests on some projects work units for whatever reason I am now almost unable to do so, unless I micromanage to the nth degree, in order to do the tests.
Will keep going but I might be going back to a previous version so I can get it to do what I want.

I have had the same issue previously, it seems that since BOINC was never designed to run different apps under the same project, it considers SoB, in your case, as the BOINC app that is running. If it has a long way to go, it doesn't let you suspend SoB and run shorter apps. It applies the logic that Rytis is referring to. AFAIK, this is not new behavior with 6.10.58. Sometimes, Murphy's solution works, but not always.

It may not appear that the server is doing well…however, considering this has been by far the most active Challenge in 3 years, we are quite pleased. Yes, the validator issue is disappointing but since this is an LLR Challenge, scores are determined when results are returned. This backlog will only affect the invalid tasks.
Nevertheless, we are taking a step to see if we can lower the stress enough to give the validator time to work. k<1200 work has been released into the buffer. The leading edge of these tasks are at ~792K. Therefore, the tests will take longer…and yes, they'll earn more points as well.
The only side affect of this is that primes found at that level will push the 1200<k<10000 primes closer to the edge. Fortunately, the first 30 hours of the Challenge has created a nice buffer to the 5000th prime at the Prime Pages.
Primes found at this level will enter the Top 5000 list above 1350. This means they'll be on the list for years to come. :)

Well...I now have tons of long LLR and Sieve work on most of my machines (many remote) since I left the "send other work" on for my GPUs. These will take days to sort through. I had plenty of Challage jobs in my queue. Wanted to run some GPU. Well, it's bad enough that I can't select which project the GPU work will come from, but last night my machines downloaded all kinds of other jobs. This would not have been a problem but for the fact that they went high priority - stopped my challenge jobs - and proceeded to suck up CPU time. This caused our team to drop one place and I dropped 10 places in the challenge positions!

Glad to hear that email notifications are still up during the

for a while. I got my first top5000 during the run-up to the
Challenge, Feb 1st, entered at 4828. I checked a few days

at 4969 ... err, make that 4976. Sounds like 150 new top5000

I'm expecting that we've hardly gotten started on the new ones

I'd be interested to hear stats on how_many/how_large the

Automatic Prime Submissions
The best way to make sure your primes are submitted in a timely manner is to give PrimeGrid permission to submit the primes on your behalf to the Prime Pages.
To do this, please edit your PrimeGrid preferences page to give PrimeGrid permission to submit. Name and last name (surname) are required by the Prime Pages to report primes.
If you do not wish to submit primes using your name, but wish to give PrimeGrid permission to submit, please enter "Anonymous" in the name field. As with all prime discoveries, the double checker will be given an opportunity to report before the prime, as a last resort, is submitted anonymously.
For those who already have a Prime Pages account from previous prime efforts can also participate in this auto-reporting. No access to your Prime Pages prover account is needed...just permission (and name) to report on the PrimeGrid preferences page.
Thank you and best of luck to everyone!

4 hours remain!
Final preparations are ongoing now for the conclusion of the Challenge. For those "moving on" after the Challenge AND have a full cache of work now (4 hours worth), it might be a good time to set "no new work".
Please update your clients early and often to get those completed WU's reported and counted. Don't wait till the end with a large cache of results to submit.
-----------------------------------------------------
A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed. Therefore, the Challenge will not be considered final until all quorum's affecting scoring positions are completed. Because of this, we have a "clean up" period where the goal is to complete these quorums.
We hope for a fast "clean-up". If everyone can remember to either complete their cache or ABORT their WU's, then we'll be able to finalize earlier rather than later. Expect up to a week or more before results become final.
Good Luck to everyone as we finish these last remaining hours...
Thank you. :)

I agree Jeff, at least it wasn't boring 1 hour into the Challenge for the rest of the Challenge, the Top 3 Team Spots were up for Grabs almost the whole Challenge. A very good running Battle for some of the other Team & Individual Positions kept it interesting the whole challenge too.
Congrat'z to the SUSA Team for their Win and Team Norway for their 3'rd Place Finish & Congrat'z to Shanky too for his 1'st Place Individual Finish and all the rest of the Top 10 Finishers

Preliminary data
Fireworks are indeed justified for this occasion. What an amazing amount of work completed and a ton of primes found. Although the validator was overwhelmed early on, the server held up to the stress (fortunately this did not affect scoring). The extra RAM and additional server side adjustments really paid off. The additional suggestion to disable "resending lost tasks" enabled the server to remain responsive...although there were some rough patches before and after.
There was one issue to note. Longer WU's were released to help relieve the load on the server. These tasks were for k<1200 and n~792K. This had a positive effect. Unfortunately, we experienced a work flow issue and the buffer ran dry for a couple of hours on the 5th. For anyone will less than 2 hours cache, this caused problems. Additional problems occurred for users who left "send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" on. Therefore, the mountain stage of the Tour de Primes was canceled and will be rescheduled later this month.
Once again, it was exciting to see the top teams go neck and neck to the wire. This Challenge will set several records. We'll need a few days to process the data. A lot of xGFN testing is left to do on the found primes so expect them to roll out over the next few days. :) Thank you to everyone who participated.
While the Challenge is officially over, the "clean up" process now begins. If you have the resources to help, please see: The "Clean Up" Phase below. All that is required is to continue crunching Proth Prime Search (LLR) to complete the aborted and timed-out resends.
Official results are probably a week away, but here is some preliminary data to ponder. :)
Over 3M tasks were completed resulting in over 21.6M Challenge points awarded. A record by a long shot.
373 teams and 2548 individuals participated in the Challenge.
Thank you to everyone. We appreciate your participation and hope you had fun!
The preliminary top 10 in each category are listed below. Note: scores are not final as tasks later determined to be invalid will be deducted from the total score.

The "Clean Up" Phase
Past observation has shown that a quick "clean up" phase is primarily based on how many "timed out" tasks there are. We expect this to be a relatively quick "clean up". Immediately after the Challenge, the initial "clean up" handles all the aborted tasks. Then, for the next 2 days, "timed out" tasks are the focus of the "clean up". After those 2 days, then tasks that have "timed out" twice will be the focus...and so on. The Challenge will not be considered final until all quorums affecting scoring positions are completed.
The dilemma of only doing Challenge tasks is that after the initial "clean up" of aborted tasks, the buffer would remain at 0 until a "timed out" task was returned. Hosts that only have PPS (LLR) selected would sit idle until a "timed out" task was recycled. Therefore, work is always made available to keep hosts from going idle.
A couple of measures are taken to maximize the opportunity for Challenge tasks to be sent out first and to minimize new work. First, new work will have a longer deadline. The task with the shorter deadline will be crunched first. Second, the buffer will be set initially at 1K so that at most, there's only 1K new tasks at any given time.
If one participates in the "clean up", almost certainly new work will be processed. To minimize this, observe the following key times:
- Any time the Proth Prime Search (LLR) buffer on the front page is above 1K, resends are available.
- Most work sent out right after the Challenge completes will be recycled "aborted tasks"...most likely for the first 24-48 hours.
- 2 days (8 Feb 18:00 UTC) after the Challenge completes, another wave of resends typically are available ("timed out" from abandoned tasks at the end of the Challenge).
As long as the buffer on the front page is at 1K or below, there's enough resources participating in the "clean up". Additional resources will not speed up the process.
We greatly appreciate any help in the "clean-up" process. However, we fully understand the need/desire to "move on".

This would have been much less of an issue except for the doubling of the length of the PPS sieve work without extended deadlines. This resulted in the "send work from any subproject..." option sending these to CPUs and pushing them often to High Priority running (which, of course, stopped lots of challenge work for several hours even on the fastest machines). The GPU apps make the challenge series with shorter workunits a new animal, which makes these glitches understandable (though still unpleasant). For the next similar challenge, it would be a good idea to drastically extend the deadlines on some of the non-challenge work that has been lengthened or GPU crunching to minimize such issues.

We could be nice people and all do PSP LLRs and SoBs until the results are finalized. That'll take about a week and the validator will be able to catch up... ;)
But seriously, it was a pretty neat challenge if we returned so much work overall. 3M tests is ridiculous amount considering I've barely done 10K on all my machines combined! That and I only had 2 cores of my i5 because of...SoB. Which validated instantly by the way. :)

:D Didn't foresee that. It's a dummy account to do exactly what you said...feed in previously known primes. It's just temporary until we implement a better solution.
As the primes get larger, we are attempting to prevent DC and TC of known primes while at the same time maintain integrity of PG's primes database to represent the entire search space.
[edit] Should have named him Prime Buster. ;)

How to know that the prime was found during The Challenge?
For example, were primes in "Newly reported primes" found during The Chellange?
Will we receive any statistics, what primes were found during The Challenge?
I understand that we need to wait after the last challenge WU will be validated, but how we can recognize, was this prime found during the challenge or after?
It's very important, because I'm a promoter of PrimeGrid challenge in my Team and I want to explain my team members what is the dry result of their participation in Challenge, how many primes we found together and what is the share of everyone in the common achievement.
Some of the team members switched to anothers projects at once after the challenge finished. For the future participation in PrimeGrid challenges, better to show them the real result of the previous. I suppose you understand me. |

Vato, thanks!
More better than nothing.
But as I see the report date is not actual enough.
The biggest report date is 7th Feb.
There are no, for example,
177*2^798443+1 (london2004)
151*2^809716+1 (SlavaAltus)
primes from "Newly reported primes"
I think they were found during the challenge but had been checked only yesterday. |

I know we've all been concerned about the validator for the last week or so, but is there an update on the challenge cleanup? I see there's currently 4600 PPS WU in the queue, so (assuming all is running right) that means there is some cleanup still going on, but do we know how many of the outstanding WU affect the scoring positions?

Yeah,
I wish the Primegrid powers that be would turn on several of the features that were disabled during the tourney.
The prime reporting stats are also not accurate (there was not a time when we went three days without a prime, or, only a day with 1 prime). It seems that only stats that are current are the ones done by Sys@NBG (sp?) but you have be doing prpnet for those stats.

Looks like the validator has caught up with its backlog now--it's remaining steady at ~40,000 tasks waiting for validation, and when I submitted a bunch of PPS LLR workunits earlier today, they validated within 5 minutes (that is, the ones without wingmen or on which my wingmen had returned their results before me). |

The results are Final!
(belated closeout)
This Challenge was finalized on 11 Feb but the thread had yet to be closed out until now. Apologies for the delay in housekeeping.
What an amazing amount of work completed and a ton of primes found. 2011's first Challenge set a new standard in the PrimeGrid Challenge series as the most powerful LLR Challenge yet in regards to raw computing power. For the three days of the Challenge, an average of 11.57 results were returned every second which amounts to about 10400 cores full time. This was definitely top500.org material. :)
To give a little perspective about the load the server experienced, here are the top 6 Challenges in regards to tasks completed in a 24 hour period:
1M tasks 3-6 February 2011 PPS LLR Year of the Rabbit
813K tasks 25 July 2010 PPSE LLR Full Moon
800K tasks 14-17 February 2010 PPS LLR Year of the Tiger
745K tasks 2-3 October 2009 PPS LLR Harvest Festival
719K tasks 18 November 2010 SGS LLR Leonids
550K tasks 15 March 2009 PPS LLR Ides Of March
Therefore, the mountain stage of the Tour de Primes was canceled and will be rescheduled for 26 Feb.
Over 3M tasks were completed resulting in over 21.6M Challenge points awarded. A record by a long shot. Over 200 Top 5000 primes were found in the three days of the Challenge. At this n level, that's incredible.
373 teams and 2548 individuals participated in the Challenge.
Once again, it was exciting to see the top teams go neck and neck to the wire. Congratulations to SETI.USA as the top team and shanky123 as the top individual. Remember, the top 100 participants and top 50 teams earn points for this Challenge.
Thank you to everyone. We appreciate your participation and hope you had fun!
