Hey everyone,

I have a bad issue of graphical UI lag only when PrimeGrid is running. I can replicate this issue on my other computer as well.

The lag very distracting and forces me to pause PrimeGrid when I am using computer.

This does not happen on other GPU projects such as Folding@Home, Collatz Conjecture, and GPUGRID.

I am also alert that some other people does not have this issue.

I am currently running 2 GTX260s in one of my computer and 1 GTX 260 on my other computer.

What can I do to stop the lag? Any help would be appreciated.

This is normal for a high optimized GPU-app. If you check with "gpu-z" whilst running TPsieve or CWPsieve, you will see more than 95% utilization...

Yes I am aware of the efficiency that the application yields. But I noticed that other projects (F@H, Collatz) also utilizes around 98% of the GPU all the time.

Also, some of the other team members on XS does not have this issue, but they are currently crunching with ATi cards.

Do you have this issue?

I have the same lag with my GT240(GT215) on DotschUX1.2-x64.
The app for AMD uses OpenCL and needs more time...

Sure, don't use the GPU for processing!
(If the GPU is busy processing PG or other program, it will have less resources for updating the monitor display; and the more efficient the coding, the worse the lag gets.)

Seriously, you could use another GPU for display and use the best one just for processing.

In BOINC manager, under computing preferences/CPU usage
unset "use GPU while computer is in use"
and set "Only after computer has been idle for ... minutes" to 0.5 or similar.

This would tell BOINC to use GPU only if you don't work on your computer.

I agree with killer; this lag is startling. wth?

but, I agree with the suggestions to not crunch or not while in use--not crying. those of us crunching w/ati cards have not experienced this--not like this. I have 2x5870s in my other machine and I have never seen a lag like this. mw has a lag, but numerous options to tweak.

oh well.

again, not crying so flame not, just adjusting to the nvidia side of things. I am pleased to see someone else suffering this lag as I was wondering what is wrong. no matter, the 580 was too good to pass up, so trying yaws proj.

good luck killer.

I also use ATI 5870 graphics cards and I have a very noticeable lag when using the computer, but as it still works I can put up with it.
It does make it difficult to place the cursor over an item as it jerks around a bit.

My settings use 0.05 of a CPU with each of 2 graphics cards, so 0.1 of a CPU is used when 2 Proth Primes are running at the same time.

I have not noticed a lag when using CPU only.

Thanks for the help guys.

I've solved the problem by putting a third GPU (9800GTX+) into the machine, and went with mfbabb2's solution.

I configured BOINC by using cc_config.xml, entering <ignore_cuda_dev>2</ignore_cuda_dev> in the options.

Works like a charm.

Yeah, the UI lag means I can't run Proth Prime Search's cuda32 stuff in the background during the day, even though the cpu stuff runs fine and doesn't affect me.

So, that means probably 10+ hours (min) per day going unused, when if the UI lag didn't happen it could run 24x7.

If there was a way of allocating (say) 95% GPU usage for PrimeGrind, instead of it taking over the whole GPU, that would probably work.

No idea if the way CUDA works allows for that though. Might be an all-or-nothing thing or something.

I'm running a GTX285, but doubt it makes a difference except in the NVIDIA vs ATI aspect of things.
