I was tried to compute PPS on my machine with Ubuntu 10.10 64bit (2.6.35-23-generic with Gnome) on AMDx2 64 processor with GF9600GT GPU but all tasks have "Error while computing"...

NVIDIA problems: The 260.19.xx drivers are well... eh not so well... 256.44 or 256.53 drivers work.

http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=2839

Later versions may work but I haven't tested them.

ATI problems: According to an AMD/ATI technician the HD4200 is based on the RV620 core but OpenCL only supports RV7XX or later cores.

This should work for all non Fermi crunchers...

195.36.15 (the CUDA 3.0 release driver) mostly works with Fermi, but there are some weird things going on, in CUDA at least. The 195.36.24 package is the first driver with "official" Fermi support, I think.

Message 30129 - Posted: 30 Dec 2010 | 20:49:59 UTC

The adding of -m 8 worked fine in my case with my GTX 460 using Ubuntu's driver for my card which is currently fixed at 260.19.06 I really did not want to have to go in and try messing with that as in the cases I have had to do that before for whatever reason it has been a difficult process causing untold problems.

I did have to dig around for quite some time to find a suitable app_info.xml file that I could use and edit to add the needed entry for the command line. So I am including the one that I used to solve the problem on my machine here at the bottom of this post for the benefit of those it may help.

The following has been tested successfully resolves the problem on Ubuntu 10.10 (Maveric Meerkat) when using the standard Nvida drivers from the Ubuntu Restricted Drivers Manager and an Nvidia GTX 460 graphics card. It is very likely to work with other distributions/cards etc also however I have not any to test so this is at your own risk. The app_info.xml is also set up for version 1.35 of the PPS (Sieve) Cuda app future versions would need appropriate modification to the file before use.

Now for the steps to use this solution, this is based on Ubuntu but could be modified for other operating systems fairly easily, all commands specified bellow are typed into your terminal.

First shut down your boinc-client completely, merely shutting down the manager is NOT sufficient. The following works on ubuntu others may vary.

sudo service boinc-client stop

Then change to your project directory with ubuntu the following command will do this, with other distributions you will have to change the /var/lib/boinc-client part to the correct path for your system.
cd /var/lib/boinc-client/projects/www.primegrid.com

Next you need to create the app_info.xml file with the following command to bring up a text editor to input the file contents.
sudo nano app_info.xml

Next paste the following contents into the file, take care to edit the file names mentioned if you are not using the same version of PPS (Sieve) Cuda as this is written for namely 1.35.

Finally for boinc to have access to this file you will need to have it owned by the proper user and with the proper permissions this is a security check in boinc that it will only use files that are owned by it's own user. If your setup uses a different username/group for boinc use that in place of boinc.boinc here in the form username.group
chown boinc.boinc app_info.xml && chmod 644 app_info.xml

Next all you need to do is restart the boinc service and everything should now work great :)

@MttJocy
Your app_info contains unneeded entries. ;) All entries with "*.sieveinput" are not needed for "Proth Prime Search (Sieve)" anymore and your file contains only entries for this one PG-project. I have done this work for all PG-projects for Linux32/64 with/without Cuda/ATI. The site for all downloads is listed in the thread App_info file.

But there is a better way for the most GPUs (ATI and Fermi needs an app_info). Enable in the project preferences all projects you want to crunch without "Proth Prime Search (Sieve)", enable "Use CPU", enable "Use nVidia/ATI" and then activate "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work"....

Ah, thanks for that, they are even better though you have used a different value for that <cmdline>-m #</cmdline> fix thing not sure without testing if that will work better or worse for me. I have recently realized that some work units are still failing (usually when I have other things going on that use the card for example being in SL etc but then only if in busy places so seems related to the amount of non CUDA work the card is doing). Pretty odd surely the card being busier should not cause a fail but merely a slowdown in processing speed?

I'm having pretty much the same problem running Ubuntu 10.10 (32bit) with an ATi HD-4850 (RV770).
DnetC ATi tasks work OK but PPS 1.35 (ati3ati) tasks all error out immediately. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Were these issues ever resolved? I have a new AMD II X6 1090T machine with a GTX 570, running ubuntu 10.10 64 bit. I downloaded and installed (via System->Administration->Additional Drivers) the "latest" driver version from the nVidia website, 260.19.06, which disables the "nouveau" driver that comes with the OS. After a reboot I began happily crunching PPS Sieve GPU units at breakneck speed without error.

I was able to work around the driver problems. That change got added to Linux with this last application update in mid-January.

When Einstein@Home can run its Linux apps with less than 100% CPU, you'll know the driver problem has actually been resolved. You should then upgrade your drivers for maximum speed.

Okay, interesting... thanks!

I was running the 260.19.06 driver until a few days ago, accumulating something like 10 million credits on PPS Sieve along the way. Yay me. A few days ago I installed the (beta) 270.18 driver. My runtimes on PPS Sieve WUs increased a tiny bit, maybe 1%... certainly not enough to make me want to roll back. I was hoping to enable the o/c support with the upgrade; I've read a bunch about "Coolbits" settings in xorg.conf and such on the web over the last few days but haven't had success getting that working with either the 260.xx or 270.xx drivers yet. So, still at stock clocks for now, but everything is still happily crunching, so that's good.

Since my post here in Jan, I proceeded to do my best to follow the instructions to install the SDK, but, after many fruitless hours, still no luck. I reckoned I must just be way too much of a Linux n00b to ever get anything to work properly! And so I set the GPU back to crunching DNetC tasks... but - like a rotten tooth - I just can't help worrying it all the time, so I keep trying a few PPS tasks every now & again in the vain hope that it just might suddenly 'work'!

Tasks are now crashing with the following error:-
