How to Join the Challenge - GPU

This thread is specific to GPU's only. Please read the CPU ONLY post for general information.

When compiling the information for "How to Join", I quickly realized that there were many more variables at play when using the GPU...far more than I can keep track of. Therefore, in a request for help, I'm using this thread to collect information from y'all in hopes of creating a "basic" instruction set for users who wish to participate in the Challenge with their GPU's.

This first post will be updated with the information you provide. Your help is much appreciated. :)

CPU Only

CPU and GPU

  1. In your PrimeGrid preferences section. Make sure "Use CPU" and "Use ATI GPU" and/or "Use NVIDIA GPU" are checked.
  2. Select only the PPS (Sieve) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section.

GPU Only - Is there any way to only get GPU WU's as I'd like my CPU to work on something else?

  1. In your PrimeGrid preferences section. Make sure "Use CPU" and "Use ATI GPU" and/or "Use NVIDIA GPU" are checked.
  2. Select the other project(s) you want to use on the CPU.
  3. Do **NOT** select the PPS (Sieve) project.
  4. Check the "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" box.

This will send your selected projects to the CPU. Since the projects you selected aren't available for the GPU, and you have "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" selected, BOINC will send your GPU anything it has available, which happens to be the PPS (Sieve) project.

NOTE: If you don't want your CPU to do any PG project(s), deselect "Use CPU" and select PPS (Sieve) project.

CUDA

Should run using standard app now. BOINC should download all necessary files...including cudart.dll for Windows and libcudart.so.2 (32-bit, 64-bit) for Linux. Needs .Net 3.5 or msvcrt90.dll. msvcrt90.dll might soon be included in the sent files.

ATI/OpenCL

Should run using standard app now. BOINC should download all necessary files. Must have the Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) package because it contains both the 'Display Driver and the OpenCL Driver'. Download here - ensure that the Download description includes OpenCL Driver. Alternatively, the OpenCL driver can be installed as a separate install via the 'Individual Downloads' tab (just ensure it is the same version as the installed ATI driver).

NOTE: At least v10.10 drivers are needed. It has been observed that the v10.12 drivers appear to be faster than previous drivers.

    ATI HD4xxx Ubuntu 64bit
But the driver download page only offers me "ATI Catalyst™ 10.11 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver" no APP version listed.

Linux requires the installation of the Stream SDK following these installation instructions. Currently this is still v2.2 but v2.3 is expected soon (even the file 'ati-stream-sdk-v2.3-lnx64.tgz' appears to be sitting in the downloads but use at your own risk).

Multiple cards (same)

    Must use app_info? DCF issues?

Multiple cards (mixed)

    Must use app_info? DCF issues?

Running two WU's in parallel

    Must use app_info

FAQ

...the beginning of one at least.

Q: Which nVidia GPUs can be used for PPS-Sieve?
A: Any CUDA-capable card will work.

Q: Which ATI/AMD GPUs can be used for PPS-Sieve?
A: Any Radeon 4000-series or higher.

From the ATI Stream SDK v2.2 release notes:
The ATI Radeon™ HD 5970 GPU is currently supported in single-GPU mode only. It is
recommended users only access the first device on an ATI Radeon™ HD 5970 GPU for GPU compute.

Q: What software needs to be installed to use an nVidia GPU?
A: The latest nVidia driver, except on Linux where the 256.53 driver is the best. On Windows, install the Microsoft .NET framework v3.5 if msvcrt90.dll is not present.

Q: What software needs to be installed to use an ATI/AMD GPU?
A:

Q: How can I run multiple GPUs without BOINC idling a CPU core?
A: The >50% CPU estimation problem.

Q: Why am I not getting any WUs?
A: (Multiple reasons)

Q: Why are my WUs are erroring out?
A: Look at your stderr output from a failed WU. If you see "Computation Error: No factors found...", first make sure you're not running an nVIDIA 260.* driver on Linux. Then lower your overclock.

For most other errors, make sure the required drivers and software are present.

Q: How can I set up PrimeGrid to run XYZ on my CPU and PPS-Sieve on my GPU?
A:

Q: Why does PPSieve run much faster on nVidia GPUs?
A: For one thing, nVIDIA's CUDA compiler is much more efficient than ATI's OpenCL compiler. For another thing, ATI GPUs don't seem able to split 64-bit numbers into their 32-bit components as easily as nVIDIA's. That accounts for an almost 50% drop in speed.

As compared to CPUs, GPUs simply have more processing power. The FMA instruction also helps. Plus there are algorithms I haven't tried on CPUs, though I wouldn't expect more than a 50% increase in speed from them.

Q: Why should I use app_info.xml?
A:

Q: Why should I *NOT* use app_info.xml?
A: Complexity, prone to errors, needs to be updated whenever PrimeGrid updates an app, needs an entry for every PrimeGrid project you want to run

Q: Where can I find a sample app_info.xml for all PrimeGrid projects for my computer? For ATI? For nVidia? For Linux? For Windows? For Mac? For 32 bits? For 64 bits? For all permutations of the above???

Q: What are the drawbacks of GPU computing?
A: extra power and heat, possible GUI slowness

Q: How can I tell what percentage of the GPU is being used?
A: GPU-Z or other tools

Q: How much faster is a GPU?
A: The fastest GPU can complete a PPS-Sieve WU more than 200 times faster than the fastest CPU. But recall that a CPU can run multiple WUs at once.

It is really essential that your GPU completes a GPU WU before the challenge because that means you have a compatible GPU and solved any driver and app_info issues. The main related Message board threads including app_info.xml are:
Sieving : ppsieve ATI/OpenCL testing
Sieving : ppsieve CUDA testing
Number crunching : App_info file
Number crunching : App_info file be created for 2 Wu at once with Gtx 460 Just like Seti@home
Sieving : ppsieve OpenCL *Mac* testing

Questions should be directed to the most relevant thread.

A minor correction:

I think that the driver version should be at least 10.10 for this to work. Note that tepek reported that the 10.12 drivers appear to be faster than previous drivers - which I also noticed on my windows box.

There should be a warning regarding usage of the app_info.xml in that all previous primegrid WUs should be completed otherwise these will get trashed if the app_info does not correctly specify the corresponding subprojects. It can be rather hard to get the app_info correct for all subprojects so use it only if necessary.

Not true (unless something just changed) -- CUDA card must have at least 200MB memory (so says the message from the server).

Ok GPU drivers installed but the preferences (using home) won't uncheck the other projects. I tell it to and it rechecks them. Same behavior on default preferences.

Help pls??

ATI HD4xxx Ubuntu 64bit
But the driver download page only offers me "ATI Catalyst™ 10.11 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver" no APP version listed.
Peter

Linux requires the installation of the Stream SDK following these installation instructions. Currently this is still v2.2 but v2.3 is expected soon (even the file 'ati-stream-sdk-v2.3-lnx64.tgz' appears to be sitting in the downloads but use at your own risk).

I'm stumped. I interpreted the instructions in two ways, and both led me to epic fail:

Other BOINC projects on CPU, PG on GPU
1. Fire up SZTAKI on the CPU.
2. Follow PG's instructions accordingly: disable all PG CPU subprojects, disable PG Sieve, enable 'request work from other projects if no work is available.'
3. After clicking save, PG enables a bunch of PG subprojects I never asked for! BOINC starts downloading work for them. If I'm lucky a sieve unit will be amongst them, but it's clearly grinding on the CPU.

Other PG subprojects on CPU
1. Enable a subproject or two.
2. Follow PG instructions accordingly.
3. The result is pretty obvious: BOINC gives me work for whatever CPU apps I chose. Duh. :)

What am I missing here?

This method is just a trick. By selecting any other PG sub-project your cache will fill with that sup-project.
the "enable' any other sub-project if the selected sub-project if no work is available.

By using a project other than PrimeGrid it will fill your CPU cache with random WU from PG.

The only way to run ppsieve (GPU ONLY) any any other Boinc project. You must use an app_info.xml
file. And enable ppsieve in the your PG preferences.

The app_info.xml file will take care of it for you.

Hope this helps

It appears that your GPU is either an HD2xxx or HD3xxx series card. Since these do not support OpenCL, you card will not be capable of running the PPS sieve tasks.

Try going into "PrimeGrid preferences" (under "Your account") and set "Use CPU" to no. Leave "Use ATI GPU" and/or "Use nVidia GPU" set as applicable. Then, make sure that EITHER "Send work from other subprojects if selected projects have no work" is set to yes or PPS Sieve is enabled.

Disclaimer: I have NOT tried this myself (as I have no GPU), but it seems like it should work. (Methinks if it didn't work, then the "Use CPU" checkbox would be pointless.)

You're looking at my work computer. My home computer is a MacBook Pro on which I have already tested the new sieve app.

OK, this may be slightly silly/noobish of a question, but I have a pretty new laptop. I'm pretty sure its video card is "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD". That would be the GPU. There's no program for Intel GPU's like there is Nvidia or ATI, right?

I'm just sad because I see dozens of people blowing past me a day since the new program came out and wondering if there's any way I can get in on this delicious new/fast thing.

Nope. Intel isn't expected to have anything remotely capable of this until mid-2011. And just because it's capable doesn't mean I'll have a client for it either.

Gave the new instructions a try. Unfortunately, I didn't get any new PG tasks when set up this way, let alone GPU ones.

I'll tool around with the appinfo file and see if that helps.

Which OS?
An app_info for linux64 and cuda is listed in the thread App_info file.

Vato and i working on a shorter cuda-version for linux64 and also linux32. We fiddling with some unneeded entries and the linux32-version is untested until now. I am waiting on answer from Vato.

In the waiting time i wrote an ati-version for both linux. You have to install the right ati-driver (named with APP) or the Stream-SDK.
If you have time and want to test, i will send you a download-link via PM...
