Welcome to the Winter Solstice Challenge

The end of 2010 is quickly approaching and so too is the final Challenge of the 2010 Challenge series...the Winter Solstice Challenge. A 3 day* (72 hour)* Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's PPS (Sieve) application.

* 3 day 5 hour 38 minutes = 77 hr 38 minutes

The Winter Solstice...a predictable event in nature that has occurred for billions of years. A way point in the cyclic motion of the Universe. Many of the today's major winter festivals and celebrations can trace their origins back to this event...the longest night of the year (or the shortest day).

We'd like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday...whatever festival or celebration you may observe.

NOTE: The servers are located in the Northern Hemisphere; therefore, we'll observe winter. However, the Southern Hemisphere will be experiencing the Summer Solstice.

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the PPS (Sieve) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 18 December 2010 18:00 UTC and end 21 December 2010 23:38 UTC. Application builds are available for the following:

  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.35 (ati13ati)
  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.35 (cuda23)
  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.36
  • Microsoft Windows running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU 1.36

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 18 December 2010 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 21 December 2010 23:38 UTC will be considered for credit. Since this is a fixed credit project, we'll be using cobblestones for scoring.

Credit is currently set at 2314 cobblestones per WU.

About the Proth Prime Search

The Proth Prime Search is done in collaboration with the Proth Search project. This search looks for primes in the form of k*2^n+1. With the condition 2^n > k, these are often called Proth primes. This project also has the added bonus of possibly finding factors of "classical" Fermat numbers or Generalized Fermat numbers. As this requires PrimeFormGW (PFGW) (a primality-testing program), once PrimeGrid finds a prime, it is then tested on PrimeGrid's servers for divisibility.

Our initial goal was to double check all previous work up to n=500K for odd k<1200 and to fill in any gaps that were missed. We have accomplished that now and have increased it to n=800K. PG LLRNet searched up to n=200,000 and found several missed primes in previously searched ranges. Although primes that small did not make it into the Top 5000 Primes database, the work was still important as it may have led to new factors for "classical" Fermat numbers or Generalized Fermat numbers. While there are many GFN factors, currently there are only about 275 "classical" Fermat number factors known. Current primes found in PPS definitely make it into the Top 5000 Primes database.

Once the 800K goal is reached, we may head to 1M before turning our focus to smaller k values and higher n values. For example, k<300 complete to n=2M, k<600 complete to n=1.5M and so on.

For more information about "Proth" primes, please visit these links:

About Proth Search

The Proth Search project was established in 1998 by Ray Ballinger and Wilfrid Keller to coordinate a distributed effort to find Proth primes (primes of the form k*2^n+1) for k < 300. Ray was interested in finding primes while Wilfrid was interested in finding divisors of Fermat number. Since that time it has expanded to include k < 1200. Mark Rodenkirch (aka rogue) has been helping Ray keep the website up to date for the past few years.

Early in 2008, PrimeGrid and Proth Search teamed up to provide a software managed distributed effort to the search. Although it might appear that PrimeGrid is duplicating some of the Proth Search effort by re-doing some ranges, few ranges on Proth Search were ever double-checked. This has resulted in PrimeGrid finding primes that were missed by previous searchers. By the end of 2008, all new primes found by PrimeGrid were eligible for inclusion in Chris Caldwell's Prime Pages Top 5000. Sometime in 2009, over 90% of the tests handed out by PrimeGrid were numbers that have never been tested. For 2010, we hope to complete our reservation to 800K and extend it to 1M.

PrimeGrid intends to continue the search indefinitely for Proth primes.

What is sieving?

Sieving is the first step to prime finding. In general, a sieve separates wanted/desired elements from unwanted material using a tool such as a mesh, net or other filtration or distillation methods. The word "sift" derives from this term. (Wikipedia - Sieve)

In PrimeGrid's case, the desired elements ultimately are prime numbers and the unwanted material are composite numbers. Our tool of choice for PPS sieve is Geoff Reynolds'/Ken Brazier's tpsieve program. It eliminates possible candidates by removing numbers that have small factors. As this process is much faster than primality testing, it is good to thoroughly sieve a data set before primality testing.

Sieving removes many candidates at the beginning. However, the deeper the sieve goes, the slower the rate of removal, till eventually sieving removes candidates at the same rate as primality testing. This is sometimes referred to as "optimal depth". Primality testing is recommended at this point.

There are many factors that determine how much time and how deep to sieve. After sieving, all the remaining candidates must be primality tested to determine their "prime" status.

About the Winter Solstice

32 bit OS with 64 bit CPU
This is for those who are "driving with the hand brake active" (running a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit machine) ;) Wubi is a very nice tool that installs Ubuntu as a dual boot to your 64 bit machine. It's as simple as adding a program to Windows. You can even uninstall it like you would any other program. :)

Wubi - Ubuntu Installer

After getting 64 bit OS running on your machine, here's a link to ALL BOINC clients (including Linux x64): http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php If you are new to Linux and need help getting set up, let us know.

It really is simple. :)

Ubuntu has a power save feature that throttles the CPU frequency down to save power. It does not treat BOINC as an active program so will throttle down thus causing under-performance. For those downloading the latest Ubuntu 10.10, please follow these directions to make sure the frequency is not throttled down while BOINC is running:

1. In Ubuntu, right click the top menu bar
2. Select add to panel
3. Select "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor"
4. Click add

This will add a processor icon to the top menu. Click on the icon and set to "Performance". This also allows you to see the CPU frequency.

Welcome to the Winter Solstice Challenge

...

Our tool of choice for PSP/SoB sieve is Geoff Reynolds' sr2sieve program.

That could use updating. :)

Hey,

First off, great this is happening. Finally some challenge in which I can participate.

I don't know what's going on with the whole "app_info.xml" thing or the "don't check PPS Sieve and check send work from..." thing, but I get the GPU apps just fine. The estimate given for the GT 330M on Darwin 10.5.0 might just be the one I posted. At any rate, things are fine.

Question, though. I use multiple preference sets (home, school, work) since I have a bunch of computers and some cannot run, say, a sieve app in a reasonable time. We're talking 56 hours on a Pentium 4 as opposed to 16 on an i5. So I use preference sets with shorter WUs for several machines, and a set with longer ones (namely PPS Sieve CUDA) for my i5.

Will it work (read: will I be entered in the challenge) if I simply deselect everything but PPS sieve under one preference set, or does it need to be universal? That is, does it need to be set under the Primary (default) preferences?

(and if so, would that supersede everything else...because then we'd have to wait ~5 days for my other computers to submit WUs!)

Which ever preferences you set to PPS (sieve) only will be the computers that participate. If you have some computer(s) that will not participate, you do not set those preferences (assuming there is one-to-one matchup on preference in question). If some will participate and some will not using the same preference, you could always cache ahead on the one(s) that will not participate and temporarily set NNT on them before setting to PPS ... for the Challenge.

I have an old AMD (single core) which takes 61 hours for PPS (sieve) but I will probably let it try to get the 1 WU in the Challenge.

(and if so, would that supersede everything else...because then we'd have to wait ~5 days for my other computers to submit WUs!)

The Default preferences profile is just 1 of the 4 possibilities.
Only 1 exception: If you're connecting a new host, that host will get the Default profile.

Right, good - doesn't matter, I suppose, since I plan on putting my entire grid on this challenge. Perhaps I can rush to buy a power supply that'll support my GTX 260...

This'll be good. I don't expect to compete with the big guns but every little bit helps, right?

You might want to consider, instead of buying a new power supply, buying a GTS 450 instead. It should outperform your 260, and use a lot less power. Cost will be probably be higher than a new PS, but not by much (depends on how much you spend on the PS, of course.) Take a look at the power requirements of a 450. This option might make more sense.

Eh, the power supply's only 750W but it's a special one with 60A on the +12V rail, which apparently this OC'd GTX 260 desperately needs.

Card was US $125. PS is US $100. Will probably put that off til I get home and settled, since I'll have an employee discount (here's hoping...)

Gonna hold off on buying a new card for now. I'll wait til it's painfully obvious that there's a better alternative to the GTX 260 (for me). Crunching isn't my job, it's a hobby. I also play video games and such, so if I have the means, I'll upgrade. :)

A GTX 260 doesn't need anything near a 750 Watt PSU, I'm running 2 Dual GTX 580 Box's right now with only 750 PSU's and they run fine. I also have a few Dual 5870 Box's with only 650 PSU's in them ...

Due to the unique nature of this Challenge, we decided it was best to return the start time to 18:00 so that we'll be fully awake to monitor the start. However, the 21 December 23:38 UTC end time will remain so that the Challenge can end precisely on the Winter Solstice.

Therefore, the Challenge is actually 3 days 5 hours 38 minutes = 77 hours 38 minutes.

Happy Holidays!

So the Point awarded will be in the 2-3 day or the 5 & 8 day or
will there be a special 3 day 5 hours 38 minutes?

;) Just to make things real fun, Let us know on the 3rd day of Winter.

As if you didn't have enough to do.

I bet all the chickens are out of the hen house now. and running all over the
country side. As the days are getting shorter and shorter. It make the chickens
a bit cray. But when the days start to get longer all those chicken will come
home and settle down. :)

Good Luck, John & Rytis

okay - I am new to this - what do I need to do to participate in the WS Challenge?

Thanks.

Read the very first post in this thread. It's the instructions. Of specific interest might be:

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the PPS (Sieve) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 18 December 2010 18:00 UTC and end 21 December 2010 23:38 UTC.

And:

Time zone converter:

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 18 December 2010 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 21 December 2010 23:38 UTC will be considered for credit. Since this is a fixed credit project, we'll be using cobblestones for scoring.

I recommend scrolling up the top of the page and reading that entire post if you haven't already done so. If you already have read it, and have questions, please feel free to ask!

Just because I have no idea, why is the end time 23:38 ? Is this a magical number or time or is that when the moon will be in line with the sun and stars and winter's clock starts :)

Thanks Tim. I never really knew the exact time and now I do :)

Never mind, Rick. You cannot know it for ever.

After the challenge you can forget it again, because every year it is different.

Next year Winter Solstice is at 05:30 UTC, 22 December.

Yes thanks. After Tim informed me of what it was I actually got off my lazy backside and looked it up on the internet. I noticed it's totally different from year to year. I suppose that has something to do with the rotation and the tilt.

Which brings to mind, how in the world did people know what the exact time was way back when they built Stonehenge. It's pretty amazing what people did without the aid of all of our current technology.

I think it is a function of a year not being exactly 365 days, Rick.

Be interesting to know how long it'd take to do a PPS sieve on Stonehenge.

How to Join the Challenge - CPU ONLY

For GPU instructions, please see How to Join the Challenge - GPU.

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the PPS (Sieve) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. Also, set "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" to no to guarantee that no other work will be sent. The challenge will begin 18 December 18:00 UTC and end 21 December 23:38 UTC.

Application builds are available for the following:

  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.35 (ati13ati)
  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.35 (cuda23)

Time zone converter:

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock.

Stats will be available on the front page next to the clock within 30 minutes after the start.

What to expect at Challenge start

The server always gets hit hard at the beginning of the Challenge. However, we will be using the same procedure that we've used for the past two years which has been very successful. A few hours before the start (18 December 2010 18:00 UTC) "max cache" will be dropped. Additionally, "max to send" will be dropped. Anyone attempting to request more will be met with "max cache" messages.

We'll raise the front page buffer before the start of the Challenge. These settings will be adjusted as necessary. Afterwards, as conditions allow, we'll raise "max cache". We'll continue to increase "max cache" when the server can handle it.

This method allows the greatest opportunity for the most clients to get work. Even if it's just 1 task for the first few minutes, at least the client is crunching. Past Challenges have shown that clients have an excellent chance to reach "max cache" before their first task is complete. We expect the same this time.

Strategies for starting the Challenge

Depending on a variety of factors, different strategies work for different users. Here are just a few to consider:

  • large farm, user can be present at start
-Set Computer is connected to the Internet about every to 0 days
-Set Maintain enough work for an additional to 0 days
-Change PrimeGrid preferences to a fast WU project such as PPS (LLR)
-At Challenge start, update PrimeGrid preferences and only select PPS (Sieve) project
-At worse, you'll only be 1 PPS (LLR) WU late on each core starting the Challenge.
-After all machines have work, increase Maintain enough work for an additional
  • large farm, user NOT able to be present at start
-Same connection settings as above except choose PPS (Sieve) project before the start
-At worse, you'll only be 1 PPS (Sieve) WU late on each core starting the Challenge.
  • a few computers, user can be present at start
-Change PrimeGrid preferences and only select PPS (Sieve) project
-Set computers to "No New Tasks" for PrimeGrid
-At Challenge Start, update computers to "Allow New Tasks"
  • a few computers, user NOT able to be present at start
-Set Computer is connected to the Internet about every to 0 days
-Set Maintain enough work for an additional to 0 days
-Change PrimeGrid preferences and only select PPS (Sieve) project
-At worse, you'll only be 1 PPS (Sieve) WU late on each core starting the Challenge.

NOTE: This presumes you have all other BOINC projects suspended.

Best of Luck to everyone!

Why would you not use PPS (LLR) and switch Preferences to PPS (sieve) at start for ALL scenarios?

I am using:

AuthenticAMD
AMD Phenom(tm) 9350e Quad-Core Processor [Family 16 Model 2 Stepping 3]
(4 processors)

Slightly tweaked to 2100mhz from 200mhz

Any idea how long it will take to crunch these WU's on this setup please?

I have my default preferences set to .25 day's worth
of tasks; but still got a boat-load full. I've re-assigned
our gpu server to claim location as "home" (since none
of the other's are there); and set the preference to
.10 day. In theory, something like (2/24)th of a day's
worth shouldn't lose me more than an hour-or-two of
computing. If I've succeeded in dropping the tasks from
.25 to .10, this should work ... guess I'll see.

This workstation has 6 cores and 2 nvidia C2050 cards
("tessla 20"?), intel/linux 64bit. Looks like it might hit
500,000 credit/day? -bdodson

14 hours to go!!!

Please once again review the "Welcome" post as well as the "How to Join" post so you can be informed and make any last minute adjustments that are necessary.

A few hours before the Challenge, we begin to monitor the Meebo chat room at the bottom of the forum page. If at any time PrimeGrid becomes unresponsive, you can still access the Meebo chat room externally here: http://www.meebo.com/room/primegrid/

Before the start, the Subproject stats on the Server Status page will be disabled as will the 24 hour stats on the bottom of the front page. Also, the Top Primes Finder page will be disabled. This is all done to free up as much resources as possible to allow the server to send and receive work. With these short WU's and the increased competition, we expect a very high volume at start.

Stats will be available on the front page next to the clock within 30 minutes after the start.

BOINCstats provides hourly updates of Project Challenges. There you can view user and team credit and ranking trends.

Just change your prefs to 0.00 work buffer and tasks to PPS LLR until the time comes in a few hours. Then bump your prefs to 1 or 2 days and dedicate your tasks to PPS Sieving.

I wish everyone the best of luck on this PrimeGrid Winter challenge. It looks to be shaping up as a tight team race. This should prove to be an interesting battle of the GPU’s. Although I don’t game, I am hoping that the 3.2 billion transistors on my EVGA GTX 470 will help my team SETI.USA stay competitive in the running of this Solstice challenge.

I have been running my card flat out 24x7 on the PPS Sieve since the Leonids Challenge in November. Win or lose we can all take comfort that our GPU's are helping to heat our homes for the Northern Hemisphere participants.

If you have been wondering about the GTX 470’s ability to produce credit, while keeping your toes toasty this December -
I have an i7 875K with an EVGA GTX 470 SC and have completed 3,589 PPS Sieves for 7,701,369.23 credit. I have found 341,431 factors, with an average factor per work unit of 95.1326.

My primary computer, which runs Windows 7 Pro, and is completing a PPS sieve every 7 min 38 sec @ 2,311.00 credit per unit with the most recent Proth Prime Search (Sieve) v1.37 (cuda23).

Here are my specs based on following closely the build from Maximum PC:

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/features/how_build_ultimate_gaming_pc_step_step

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU K 875 @ 2.93GHz [Family 6 Model 30 Stepping 5], Memory 4094.05 MB, Coprocessors NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 (1248MB) driver: 26099.
Operating System Microsoft Windows 7 x64 Edition, (06.01.7600.00), BOINC version 6.10.58.

Weird, the .001 should only give you new work as the Wu's finish and then only 1 Per GPU, that's how mine is set up right now and how it's working. PrimeGrid is funny that way though especially if you Abort any.

The Project has a Habit though of sending everything back that you Aborted no matter what you have you Preferences set to. I've even had them send back the Aborts with my Preferences set to No New Work ...

Looks like I'll lose about an hour-and-a-half on the cards. They
were over 700,000 credits in the previous 24 hours, more than
4 times my previous best from the cpus. No new tasks worked
fine; not conflicts with other projects.

You wouldn't believe it, but seconds after the challenge started my new laptop downloaded a stack of WUs and then promptly went on standby. I forgot it wasn't on charge. Don't forget to plug 'em in folks!

Remember, for latest info, monitor the Meebo chat room at the bottom of the forum page. If at any time PrimeGrid becomes unresponsive, you can still access the Meebo chat room externally here: http://www.meebo.com/room/primegrid/

We had an issue at the start...didn't set the weights properly. Therefore, work was limited. However, everything should be running fine now...as of about 18:30 UTC.

I got an error:

Sa 18 Dez 2010 20:27:43 CET PrimeGrid Aborting task pps_sr2sieve_5588257_2: exceeded elapsed time limit 4937.806093

This is an 9400 GT @ 1400 MHz

Could this be fixed?
The 9400 GT would complete in 5 hours, one core of a Core i7 920 in 13 hours.

The 9400 GT would complete in 5 hours, one core of a Core i7 920 in 13 hours.

I don't think it can be done now. It was already discussed somewhere else.
Some help could be this:
Load a lot of PPS Sieve tasks.
Stop the BOINC client.
Edit Client_state.xml
Search for the value after <rsc_fpops_bound> for all PrimeGrid workunits and place an extra 0 before the dot (.) in the value.
Save the file and restart the BOINC client.

Good luck!

Excellent, I've now got two CUDA-capable machines in the challenge with 100% uptime. Looks as though the P4 machine I just retrofitted with a GTX 260 is gonna double its total credit (accumulated since 15 Oct) in a little under an hour.

Think I'll only do CUDA for this challenge...as I'm the only one on my team, I'll parlay my CPUs to projects I've not paid attention to in about a month. :P

Good luck everyone.

Yowzers! I just returned my first WU of the challenge (well, not techincally in the challenge; it was assigned prior to the start of the challenge) and am shocked to see that I received a whopping 2311 credits for it. The workunit took 54826 seconds, so that works out to 151 credits/hour. Can that be right? This is on a CPU (Core 2 Duo E4500), and last time I ran PPS Sieve (with the old, smaller workunits that took ~2.75 hours instead of ~15.25; this would have been with ppsieve instead of tpsieve), I only got about 50 credits/hour, so this seems totally crazy.

Looking at some other users, 2311 credits seems to be the norm for these workunits. So either my computer has just suddenly become blazingly faster than it used to be, or there's been a boo-boo... :-)

These are fixed credit WUs - my old AMD takes 61 hours for them and still gets the 2311 credit (as does a fast GPU taking 5 minutes).

The old ones I got 50 credits/core-hour on were also fixed credit. Those performed better than any other subproject for me (on a 32-bit machine, it still produced more credit than LLR because of the fixed credit), but 150 credits/core-hour is just crazy on a 32-bit CPU--hence my thinking that something is messed up.

Once and for all: The scoring is right!

We do 18 times the work for 17,135 times the credit (Initial CPU/GPU credits were 134.87 Cr. for 1M/1G Proth Prime Search Sieve WUs not sieving on the Riesel side). In fact the credits were already lowered and I'm not speaking about the little 2311 prime credit joke ;)

+1,-1 instead of +1 or -1 only.
3G ranges instead of 1G ranges
3M exponent ranges instead of 1M exponent ranges.

The bug is there are still projects that grant claimed credits ignoring the fact that for example the Ubuntu Linux Versions deliver higher Benchmark results because the BOINC Benchmark were autovectorized by the compiler*. On my old Quad the Linux Benchmarks are 70% plus percent higher than the windows ones.

Another issue are the Turbo Modes of modern CPUs which are able to increase the speed by several hundred MHz which distorts BOINC Benchmark results even more because they don't put much thermal load on the CPUs.

The sad fact is: The BOINC default credit system is a mess and some people try to make an even bigger mess of it instead of doing their work and fixing long outstanding bugs.**

*In layman's terms: Parallelization of the code by using the vector units (MMX/SSE 1/2/3/4, and AVX in January) available in all "modern" CPUs.

**Not counting those persons who make stupid changes such as removing the message tab in the advanced(!) view of the BOINC manager. Sometimes I wish someone has the guts (and of course the time) to fork the code, import it into a distributed version control system (holding on the use of SVN says all about the developers) so that others could easily help and clean the whole mess up!

Edit: Fixed some typos and made new ones :)

Oops: 17.135 of course ;)

---

Before one comes with the faulty argument that the initial credits were too high:

If you compare the sieving work per WU before the new ppsieve/tpsieve apps were introduced and the sieving work that initially was done with the new apps per WU the 134.87 credits per WU were already a very significant reduction.

I understand all of the arguments and discussion of course (is in: not much of it really) but it seems to me that if a project is offering more credits, and my equipment generates more credit on this project than another, then it is sensible to use my voluntary contribution here. I'm not here to maximise my credits but to maximize my contribution science, and for me I use credits as a marker for that. (I will of course also crunch here and there for no particular reason than I wish to contribute.) Quite honestly I don't understand the 'too high/too low' arguments nor do I have the time or inclination - I just prefer to contribute and have a little fun and interest getting involved in the forums.

Thanks for trying, but neither restarting boinc nor rebooting accomplished anything. The slot it's keeping stderr.txt, etc. is number 13, not very negative in my humble opinion, but the challange has its own rules apparently.
Maybe the app is just messed up and doesn't even report its errors properly...

This has nothing to do with the challenge.

Do you use a virus-guard or any other sec-suite? I would make an exception for the entire boinc folder...

321 Prime Search (Sieve) v1.13
10,601.83 sec - 164.43 credit 55.83 credit/h

Proth Prime Search (Sieve) v1.36
33,844.58 sec - 2,311.00 credit 245,81 credit/h (?) - bug

Mistake of the calculation. The scoring should be at least four times lower.

Ah, makes sense. I knew the new application was doing rather more work but, as I understand it, the idea of the BOINC credit system (by that I don't mean the default credit system, rather the idea of cross-project credit as a whole) is that credit can be approximately compared between projects; thus if one project gives much higher credit than others (as these PPS Sieve workunits are currently doing), it throws off all such comparisons.

Not that I'm complaining or anything if this is really what the admins intended (it will be that much easier to get my silver badge ;-)) but I figured I'd mention it in case there's something fishy.

If my memory is right the new app did initially already 7 times the work while running a little bit faster than the old app and giving around the same credits/hour level as the old app (after the usual tiny adjustments).

Yes, comparable cross project credit is a goal that is nearly impossible to archive. In an ideal world it would be nice to have but I like consistent credits in any given project much more and of course I like the fact that this project cares about code optimization (special thanks to the Admins and Ken-g6 and Geoff Reynolds*) and don't waste enormous amounts of resources by running decades old (unoptimized) code which they either

- have inherited and don't understand
- have licensed and aren't allowed to change (if they have the source code at all)
- neglect to improve because it's not "our computing power we waste"

*not to forget George Woltman (gwnumlib, Prime 95) and Jean Penné (LLR)

The nVIDIAs appear to be running in Linux. So you need to either install older drivers (256.53 is best), or install my latest build with an app_info.xml file, or both.

The AMDs may need the .NET 3.5 runtime installed. Or they may have another problem; I'm not sure.

Well the Challenge has indeed been "challenging", so far. Here in normally sunny So-Cal, it has been quite stormy this weekend and the power has gone out three times. Not that I'm going to contend for the leadership anyway, with my sorry old GT 120 (sad that something less than 2 years old is basically obsolete). Still, crunching away as best I can. Cheers!

okay, so far I have 6 tasks, done waiting for 4 to finish before the end of the challenge. One thing i noticed is that for PPS (Sieve) there are no double checkers crunching my WUs, is this normal?

and the second thing I wanted to bring up is Linux ;)

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 and I am getting tasks done in 14hrs, way faster than on my xp machine .

Probably a basic question. However, its getting towards the end of the challenge.

Just noticed that I have 30 WU's in my queue. The deadlines on the WU's range from 18:07 22ns Dec to 18:24 24th Dec. I can only process 4 WU's every 16 hrs. The maximum I can process by 24th Dec will be another 20.

What would you suggest I do:

1. Should I abort lets say 10 of them so that they can be done before the 24th?
2. Leave them in my queue until they expire?

I would abort them so that others may get to run them before the deadline. I am in the same situation and that's what I am doing.

EDIT: The problem is the Challenge deadline which is tomorrow. I aborted all WUs that I knew would never make the deadline.

As soon as the challenge finishes I'm aborting the whole lot. Everything, PG or whatever. The Christmas break challenge follows. Everything gets a break until sometime next year, including me from monitoring all this BOINCing.

It's been a great challenge. Thanks to all my new team mates and my new team for showing PrimeGrid how to challenge :p

Watchit, we ain't brought in our reserves yet... lol

I was caught out with that once, but not in a challenge. I hate it when my PCs sit there idle. No more auto update for me.

If you choose to leave auto-update enabled:
It's good to remember that Microsoft usually posts their weekly updates on Tuesdays at around 17:00 UTC. Last week was unusually busy with approximately a dozen updates for both Win7 & WinVista.

In anticipation of a Challenge or other event you can always run a manual update on Tuesday/Wednesday and get any rebooting out of the way while you are monitoring, and before the Challenge starts. You can also change your update settings to perform auto-update weekly on Wednesday, instead of the defaults.

MS do their security patches on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. I've turned off auto-update long ago as it has impacted my crunching in times past. Haven't even installed the latest set yet, as I'm half way through a SoB unit and don't want anything to risk upsetting it!

okay, so far I have 6 tasks, done waiting for 4 to finish before the end of the challenge.

Since I did not see an answer to your questions. Here is my take on the answers from what I read in the forums.

Sieves do not normally have double checking because we are not searching for Primes, we are eliminating units with factorials. We do not search for all factorials in a unit, that is what LLR is for, we just search for more simple factorials.

The Windows Wrapper has not been updated to the same code as Linus and MAC, so yes it is faster.

It's been a great challenge. Thanks to all my new team mates and my new team for showing PrimeGrid how to challenge :p

Watchit, we ain't brought in our reserves yet... lol

Go BOINC United!

Yeah, me too. I've added two 4850 for the last stint.
Go BOINC United!

I'm hoping my Intel Atom can get one finished by tonight.

I've abandoned two possible finishers since I managed to halt a PC overnight.
Duhhh. Still, it didn't have a GPU and it's the taking part that matters ;)

Sieves do not normally have double checking because we are not searching for Primes, we are eliminating units with factors...

So sieving is eliminating composite numbers not checking a particular candidate to see if it's prime. Generally, we generate a whole load of candidates of the prime type, in this case it would have been Proth's i.e. k*2^n-1 with the condition that 2^n > k. Once we have a list of candidates the sieving starts by checking that multiples of a number is not in the list of candidates. If it is in there it's removed. We don't have to check that candidate to see if it's prime!
This app from Ken is neat as it doesn't need a sieve file (i.e. list of candidates).
You'd better ask someone else how that works!
Peter

Preparing for the Final!

With about 9 hours remaining, now would be a good time to start preparing for the end of the Challenge. Normally, the server gets hit hard as the Challenge draws to an end with everyone submitting their last results. Therefore, please remember to upload early and often.

Only work units issued AFTER 18 DECEMBER 2010 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 21 DECEMBER 2010 23:38 UTC will be considered for credit.

For those "moving on" at the conclusion of the Challenge, we ask that you abort your WU's after the end. This helps out greatly with loose WU's lying around waiting to expire. However, if you have the resources, please consider completing the work in your cache before "moving on".

Since this is a sieve Challenge, there is no need for a "clean up" period. Therefore, the results will be final shortly after the conclusion (when the validator has processed all the Challenge WU's).

Standings: Participants | Teams

Good Luck to everyone!

The Windows Wrapper has not been updated to the same code as Linus and MAC, so yes it is faster.

That was only for LLR, not sieves.

However, there is a big difference when sieving between 32 bit and 64 bit, so if XP is 32 bit and Linux 64 bit, that would account for the speed difference.

It will be a day or so before the year end results are posted. The Calendula Challenge still is not finalized for the participants. However, the team results are so we'll know the final team standings for the year.

With the upcoming Solstice, Winter will begin and the Fall Donation Drive will officially end. Currently we reached 69.1% of our goal. If you have the resources, it's not too late to donate. However, no worries. The balance will probably be transferred over to a new Winter Donation Drive...simply because, we still need the funds to operate. :)

For those who didn't get enough competition out of this Challenge, there's currently a PRPNet Challenge benefiting the SR5 Project in the mersenne.org forum. We are attempting to help them find 3-4 more primes by the end of the year to make 2010 the most productive prime scoring year yet. To be so close, it'd be a shame to let this opportunity pass by without giving it a good run.

For those who don't know, PRPNet is what PrimeGrid uses in its Project Staging Area (PSA) to prepare projects for entry into BOINC and to search for addition prime forms. PRPNet work earns PSA credit. For more information, please see The last 10 Days of 2010 PRPNet Challenge. NOTE: This is similar to the LLR Challenges in BOINC in regards to 32/64 bit applications...no advantage.

Good Luck to everyone!

To Get started: Read the Sticky Post

Message boards: Project Staging Area: PRPNet

You Download the prp client
configure the master_prpclient.ini file
==add your email address
==add your primegrid userid
==add a clientid (something for your box) => to keep your boxes apart

==add server=sr5:100:1:prime2u.com:7171 => for the mini challenge

==note there are other projects to run next year :)
a few other things but simple
=>Note the client run in a terminal window - 1 for each core

easy as pie

Good Luck

The results are Final!

The Winter Solstice is here!!! The solstice fires are the brightest they have ever been at PrimeGrid. The fuel came from an unprecedented amount of factors found. This Challenge benefited not only PrimeGrid's Porth Prime Search project but also the entire Riesel prime search community. A wonderful holiday gift to all those involved. :)

PrimeGrid's overall (Challenge + regular work) daily record was SHATTERED with over 360.7M cobblestones for a 24 hour period. Congratulations to everyone...this is an incredible accomplishment. Tempered Note: With the release of tpsieve and it's GPU build, it's impossible to compare this new record with previous one's. Nevertheless, it's an amazing amount of work.

1.3P of sieve work was crunched in 434K tasks resulting in just over 1B cobblestones awarded. The PPS (Sieve) reached an incomplete depth of over 7.7P!!! As a reminder, the sieve is 4<k<10000 and n<3M for k*2^n+1 and k*2^n-1. A HUMONGOUS sieve that would have been impossible to do without Ken Brazier's modified tpsieve* and ppsieve as well as his port to GPU's.

*originally developed by Geoff Reynolds in collaboration with Ken Brazier.

283 teams and 2110 individuals participated in the Challenge.

The Challenge Points stats will be updated soon. Congratulations to Sicituradastra. as the top team and Steve* as the top individual. Remember, the top 100 individual and top 50 team places earn points for this Challenge.

This concludes PrimeGrid's 2010 Challenge Series. Overall final results will be posted soon.

Thank you again to everyone. We appreciate your participation and hope you had fun! We wish you a Happy Holidays and hope to see you next year!

===================================================

NOTE: PRPNet is non-BOINC and requires the download of the PRPNet software. However, it really is "as easy as pie" to get started. :) Please post in the challenge thread if you need any assistance: The last 10 Days of 2010 PRPNet Challenge

There is something wrong in the scores vs points.

There are many cases with the same score but different points. Some examples:
Sitarow and Vikk
bdodson and eruda
nutcase and Caveman

Then there is the other situation with different scores but the same points. Some examples:
biancaw and Cruncher Pete
Lumiukko and shiva (Team Musketeers)

Do we know how many candidates were eliminated?
With the increased efficiency to the sieving I suppose that we should see an increase to the ratio of primes found vs. tests under LLR now?

Since the results of this challenge are final, why not to plug them into the overall chart?
