Can't find a solution to this one after several searches. I've been using GridRepublic for about three months now. I find that when I'm accepting tasks from PrimeGrid, it seems to greedily take over from other projects. I've allocated priorities so that it should have one of my eight cores, but what ends up running is 5 PrimeGrid tasks at once, some of them high priority, with all the other projects sharing the remaining three. I've tried simply not accepting PrimeGrid tasks for a while, but as soon as I accept new tasks, immediately PrimeGrid downloads a bunch of new tasks (that's fine) and then takes over the bulk of the spare cycles on my machine again. I'd like to continue to support PrimeGrid, but not at the exclusion of the other projects. Suggestions?

That's actually not a PrimeGrid problem, but an issue with the BOINC scheduler. I think that's it, anyway. It's certainly not a PrimeGrid problem since the individual projects have absolutely nothing to do with how BOINC schedules resources between projects.

So here's what I think is happening: because PG was just added to your system, it starts with a long term debt (LTD) of zero. Projects that have been running for a while may have a large negative LTD. As a result, BOINC is trying to let PrimeGrid 'catch up' by running it a lot more than Grid Republic. This should NOT happen, for reasons I won't other to go into, but unfortunately the BOINC client software (as awesome as it is) still has more bugs in it than a New York City hotel (for those that don't get that reference, just Google "New York" and "bedbugs".)

The end result is that BOINC may try to run a new project a lot more than it should.

Here's something you could do to try to remedy the situation. You can tell BOINC to reset all the LTDs to zero. Follow this procedure:

1) Find your BOINC data directory. Look at the beginning of your BOINC log for the location. You'll see an entry like this:

11/10/2010 3:56:18 PM Data directory: C:\ProgramData\BOINC

This directory will vary depending on which OS you're running, and whether you've overridden the defaults during BOINC installation. The directory in my example is the default for Windows Vista or Windows 7.

2) Open up that directory/folder in Windows Explorer, or the equivalent under Linux or Mac OS. (Sorry, I don't know what you're running since your computers are hidden, so I'll just explain as if you're running Windows.) In the data directory there may be a file named "cc_config.xml" (without the quotes). If there is, open it up with notepad, and if it doesn't exist, create it with notepad (be careful to select "all files" when saving or you'll create cc_config.xml.txt instead of cc_config.xml).

3a) If cc_config.xml already existed, you'll want to add this ONE line anywhere inside the <options> ... </options> section:

<zero_debts>1</zero_debts>

3a-1) If cc_config.xml already exists AND it already has a <zero debts> clause, then change the value in there. If it's already 1, change it to 0, restart BOINC as in step 4 below, and you're done. If it's 0, change it to 1, and continue with step 4 below.

3b) If cc_config.xml does not exist, create it with the following contents:

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
</log_flags>
<options>
<zero_debts>1</zero_debts>
</options>
</cc_config>

4) Shut down BOINC completely. Not just the BOINC manager, but the client that's running in the background. If you're not sure how to do that, just reboot your computer.

5) Start BOINC again (this may happen automatically if you rebooted). BOINC will zero the LTDs that were causing the problem. At this point, it should now be doing more or less what you wanted it to do.

6) IMPORTANT: You MUST turn off that <zero_debts> flag! If you don't, BOINC will zero the debts every time it starts. You don't want that. You should only do that when you add a new project. Go back and edit cc_config.xml and change that line to read <zero_debts>0</zero_debts>. It is NOT necessary to restart BOINC again.

That should solve your problem, but you also need to understand that BOINC is rather strange in the way it decides what to run. Once you zero the debts, don't obsess about how much it's running one project or another. Over the long haul it will run them all in approximately the percentages that you specify. But in the short term, it's not necessarily going to, say, run PG on 1 core and GR on the other cores. That's not the way it works, unfortunately.

Also, while you are waiting for stabilization, you can micro-manage by setting NNT (No New Tasks) for PG and then suspending any extra PG tasks as required. The other Projects will grab the available core(s). When the PG task(s) complete, resume the previously suspended task(s) as desired. Some amount of extra work, but you can force what you want to run.

One more thing. After re-reading your OP, I think you're suffering from the same delusions that the rest of us do: Namely that the BOINC client is going to do what you expect it to do! (How naive of us, eh?)

If you have 8 cores, and you tell BOINC to run 50% project A and 50% project B, you probably want it to run 4 cores on A and 4 cores on B.

BOINC just ain't gunna do that, except under very tightly controlled and somewhat artificial conditions. Far more likely, it's going to end up running all 8 cores on one project A for 50% of the time, and then switch, more or less, to running all 8 cores on project B the rest of the time.

Over the course of a few months, it will probably, sort of, almost, approximately devote about 50% of your total CPU cycles to A and 50% to B. If you never try to interfere with it and try to 'force' it to do what you think it should be doing, that is. The BOINC client is schizophrenic to begin with; if you try to get it to do things your way instead of the convoluted way it wants to do things, then it will be both schizophrenic AND confused.

Me? I try to run only one project at a time on any given BOINC machine. I never really could get it to share projects the way I wanted it to. The only way I could get it work the way I wanted was in the trivial case where one project was for the CPU and the other was for the GPU.

Michael, Murphy,

MANY THANKS! This goes WAY beyond any reasonable call of duty, particularly since I left out some key information (sorry, I should have anticipated that it would be relevant) about my machines, time frame, and OS. I've been running BOINC & PG for over three months now on two machines, 1 Linux (2 cores) and 1 Windows 7 Pro (8 cores), and had anticipated that the usage would be averaging out, but it's definitely not. With extreme respect for the detail that you provided (much appreciated given my decidedly non-guru status), I'm going to go with a solution that allows me to support PG, but takes rather less effort on my (lazy) part. I'll only allow PG to download tasks to the 2 core Linux machine, and not to the 8 core Windows machine. With Linux's better efficiency in making use of the cycles, this probably means that I'll end up with approximately the mix that I had set.

Again, many thanks for such prompt and detailed attention. I hope that it ends up helping a variety of other BOINC/PG supporters.

Michael, I did exactly what you said to do and it worked but completely messed up my WU's. PPS LLR run time for me is just under 8 minutes and after I did that it was going at the rate of about 8 minutes per 1%. It also messed up my eOn WU's. I ended up having to completely reinstall Boinc. Running Windows 7 64.

That's very surprising, and I don't have any explanation for that behavior. The <zero_debts> directive should only affect how BOINC schedules time between multiple projects. It should have no effect at all on WU run times, either real or estimated.

I don't know what happened. Maybe I did do something wrong, but all is good now. I'd rather just crunch PG WU's anyway.

What if when I added that file I accidentally replaced another file? You think that might have done it? It's the only thing I can think of that might have. Cause I deleted the file and it was still doing it and that's when I did the reinstall.
