Welcome to the Leonids Challenge

The Leonids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Tempel-Tuttle. They get their name from the constellation Leo from which they appear to radiate. The annual meteor shower is extremely regular in its timing and can potentially be visible for days. This year's Leonids meteor shower peaks on November 17/18 in which maximum intensity can be as much as 100 "falling stars" per hour.

While we don't anticipate 100 primes per hour (nor even for the entire 24 hours of the Challenge), we do expect upwards of 40-50 primes. However, it's the elusive Sophie Germain prime that we seek and it only takes one for that...of course, it has to be the right prime. :) NOTE: A twin prime is also possible in this search.

A 24 hour Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) application. To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 17 November 2010 18:00 UTC and end 18 November 2010 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux 32 bit, Windows 32 bit and MacIntel. These applications will be sent to 64 bit clients. As with all LLR application projects, there is no advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit.

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~15 minutes on fast/newer computers and 25+ minutes on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)

Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.

Time zone converter:

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 17 November 2010 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 18 November 2010 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will use the "prime score" method which is based on the n value (k*b^n-1) to score the challenge. The only difference is that the primary and double checker of a WU will receive the same score.

Therefore, each completed WU will earn a unique score based on its n value. The higher the n, the higher the score. This is different than BOINC cobblestones! A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.

For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.

At the Conclusion of the Challenge

We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

About the Sophie Germain Prime Search

A prime number p is called a Sophie Germain prime if 2p + 1 is also prime. For example, 5 is a Sophie Germain prime because it is prime and 2 × 5 + 1 = 11, is also prime. These numbers are named after Marie-Sophie Germain, an extraordinary "French mathematician who made important contributions to the fields of differential geometry and number theory and to the study of Fermat's Last Theorem." (Wiki)

We'll be searching the form k*2^n-1. If it is prime, then we'll check k*2^n+1, k*2^(n-1)-1, & k*2^(n+1)-1. We are able to do this because a quad sieve was performed for this search. This sieve ensured that k*2^n-1, k*2^n+1, k*2^(n-1)-1, & k*2^(n+1)-1 did not have any small prime divisors. The opportunity to find SG's and Twins in the same sieve file is appealing. However, we "expect" to find a Sophie Germain prime first.

This quad sieve was prepared quite some time ago; so it was readily available. Here are some stats for the search:

k range: 1<k<41T
n=666666 (actual 666666-666685)
sieve depth: p=200T
candidates remaining: 34,190,344

Probability of one or more significant pair = 80.1%
Probability of one or more SG = 66.7%
Probability of one or more Twin = 42.3%

Approximate WU length:
Athlon64 2.1Ghz - ~2000 secs (~33.3 minutes)
C2D 2.1 Ghz - ~1015 secs (~16.9 minutes) per core
C2Q 2.4 GHz - ~880 secs (~14.7 minutes) per core
C2Q 3.2 GHz - ~600 secs (~10.0 minutes) per core

What is LLR?

The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2^n − 1, with 2^n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penne that can run the LLR-tests. It includes the Proth test to perform +1 tests and PRP to test non base 2 numbers. See also:

Automatic Prime Submissions

The best way to make sure your primes are submitted in a timely manner is to give PrimeGrid permission to submit the primes on your behalf to the Prime Pages.

To do this, please edit your PrimeGrid preferences page to give PrimeGrid permission to submit. Name and last name (surname) are required by the Prime Pages to report primes.

If you do not wish to submit primes using your name, but wish to give PrimeGrid permission to submit, please enter "Anonymous" in the name field. As with all prime discoveries, the double checker will be given an opportunity to report before the prime, as a last resort, is submitted anonymously.

For those who already have a Prime Pages account from previous prime efforts can also participate in this auto-reporting. No access to your Prime Pages prover account is needed...just permission (and name) to report on the PrimeGrid preferences page.

Thank you and best of luck to everyone!

Like 5000-6000 tasks per prime, latest one took me about 10000 tasks to find a prime.
I'm also interested in per-project numbers.

Please, can we finally fix "Percentage of tests resulting with a prime" under PPS LLR to show four decimal digits? Perhaps all of them and "Average factors per workunit" should have nn.nnnn format.

Doing some test-runs I noticed a generous crediting - for LLR work.

Yorkfield@4GHz - Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR): runtime 925 sec = 13,91 credits (cobblestones).

I feel happy to report good news about LLR crediting for the first time.

Only for Linux

Does this mean that SGS units complete fast on Linux than they would on Mac or Windows? Or how should this statement be interpreted?

I'm not sure I'm 100% up to speed on all the apps for each platform, but my understanding is that the new LLR is running on Linux and Mac. It's not running on Windows yet. (The last part I'm sure of, because I'm the one writing the BOINC wrapper for Windows.) So, given the choice right now, Linux or Mac should be faster.

Then again, even running the same app, I'd wager Windows is usually slower anyway.

How to Join the Challenge

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Sophie Germain Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. Also, set "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" to no to guarantee that no other work will be sent. The challenge will begin 17 November 2010 18:00 UTC and end 18 November 2010 18:00 UTC.

Application builds are available for the following:

  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
  • Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
  • Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel

Note: As with all LLR application projects, there is no advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit.

A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.

For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.

Stats will be available on the front page next to the clock within 30 minutes after the start.

What to expect at Challenge start

The server always gets hit hard at the beginning of the Challenge. However, we will use the same procedure that we have been for over a year now for all the Challenges which has proved very successful. A few hours before the start (17 November 2010 18:00 UTC) "max cache" will be dropped to 16 tasks per core. Additionally, "max to send" will be dropped to 8 tasks per core. Attempting to request more will be met with "max cache" messages.

We'll raise the buffer to at least 200K. At the start of the Challenge, these settings will be adjusted as necessary. However, if the past year is any indication, we'll make the first adjustment around 30 minutes post start by raising "max cache" to 32. We'll continue to increase "max cache" when the server can handle it until a full 24 hour max cache is possible.

This method allows the greatest opportunity for the most clients to get work. Even if it's just 1 task for the first 5 minutes, at least the client is crunching. Past Challenges have shown that clients have a good chance to reach "max cache" before their first task is complete. We expect the same this time.

Strategies for starting the Challenge

Depending on a variety of factors, different strategies work for different users. Here are just a few to consider:

  • large farm, user can be present at start
-Set Computer is connected to the Internet about every to 0 days
-Set Maintain enough work for an additional to 0 days
-Change PrimeGrid preferences to a fast WU project such as PPS (LLR)
-At Challenge start, update PrimeGrid preferences and only select Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) project
-At worse, you'll only be 1 PPS (LLR) WU late on each core starting the Challenge.
-After all machines have work, increase Maintain enough work for an additional
  • large farm, user NOT able to be present at start
-Same connection settings as above except choose Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) project before the start
-At worse, you'll only be 1 SGS (LLR) WU late on each core starting the Challenge.
  • a few computers, user can be present at start
-Change PrimeGrid preferences and only select Sophie Germain Pirme Search (LLR) project
-Set computers to "No New Tasks" for PrimeGrid
-At Challenge Start, update computers to "Allow New Tasks"
  • a few computers, user NOT able to be present at start
-Set Computer is connected to the Internet about every to 0 days
-Set Maintain enough work for an additional to 0 days
-Change PrimeGrid preferences and only select Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) project
-At worse, you'll only be 1 SGS (LLR) WU late on each core starting the Challenge.

NOTE: This presumes you have all other BOINC projects suspended.

Best of Luck to everyone!

A noob question here.

Aggie (may her shadow never grow less) and her team are hard at work on some long tasks which won't complete before the challenge. It'd be a shame to abort them. What is my strategy to take part? I won't have access to the computers right at the start of the project but frankly that is not going to make a huge difference to the ultimate outcome.

Cheers!

Why not create a new directory with a fresh install just for the challenge?
Than end the running BOINC with the long-going task and put up the new install for the challenge. After the challenge the challenge-install is terminated and the old one resurrected.

At the start of the challenge, with the long-running WUs still running, raise your cache size so you download a days worth of challenge WUs, then suspend the long-running WUs. Unsuspend them again to allow more work to be fetched. Once challenge is over, set your cache back to the normal level, unsuspend everything and let it clean up. You may need to do manual updates to report work. It requires a little manual care and feeding, but doesn't require any additional installs etc.

I've never tried running two versions of BOINC on the same computer. There might be some issues with doing that. For example, if you're doing it under Windows and try to install both to run as a service you may run into problems with them colliding with each other: same service name, same unprivileged account name, same registry entries (if it uses the registy), etc.

I'm not saying it won't work, but you might have some extra hoops you have to jump through, and if you don't do it right, you may destroy your original copy of BOINC -- thus ending the currently running WUs you're trying to preserve.

It might work -- but I'd test it when you're not in the middle of long WUs.

What I'm certain WILL work, and won't mess up your existing BOINC, is to run a second copy of BOINC under a different OS installation. That way you're not messing with the original BOINC installation at all. There's three ways I can think of doing this:

1) Set up a dual boot partition and install something like Ubuntu there. Then install a new copy of BOINC under the new OS. Of course, if you still need to be running the original computer's OS for whatever reason, this won't help.

2) Similar to 1), but install the second OS on a USB thumb drive, and boot from that. You don't have to mess with the hard drive at all. Same limitation however about not being able to run stuff from the original system during the challenge.

3) Install a virtual machine on your computer. Then install Ubuntu on the VM. You can run the VM with its Ubuntu and second copy of BOINC while the rest of your computer is operating the way it usually does. The VM will use about 500 meg of ram while running. In fact, you can probably tweak it down to about 300 or 400 for an LLR challenge on a single core system. You'll need a little more for multiple cores, but LLR has a small footprint, and multi-core systems will have more ram available.

Of the three, the third option is the easiest to set up and the least intrusive, since your computer is able to continue running while the second OS is running inside a VM. Free VM software is available from at least two sources; there's a free version of commercial software available from VMWare, and there's an open source VM as well (I think it's called VBox or something like that.)

I've actually had the EXACT same problem as you for one challenge. I went the VM route and it worked like a charm. This was on one of my old, slow, computers, which only has 1 gig of ram. I still had enough memory to run Ubuntu in a VM while the host was running XP and doing its normal stuff.

Again, I'm not saying installing a second copy of BOINC in a different directory won't work -- I'm just not certain it will under all circumstances.

Good advice, and what you say will work, but there's two reasons this may cause problems for Tim:

1) He won't be there at the start of the challenge. There's no way I can think of to get his machine to run any challenge WUs until he gets home. If the long WUs are left running, those will run instead of SGS, and if he suspends them, no challenge WUs will download. Once he gets home, your method can be used.

2) These are short WUs and the server is likely to get hammered. Queue sizes are going to be limited at the start. He'll need to be micro-managing the computers, and will need to suspend and resume the long WUs multiple times in order to download challenge WUs as they trickle out from the server over the first hour or two.

EDIT: That being said, if Tim can live with those limitations, I agree that this method is (by far) the simplest to set up.

Just wondering what the "suspend" button is for and if using that to temporarily halting a task from running will cause it errors or not?

Just wondering what the "suspend" button is for and if using that to temporarily halting a task from running will cause it errors or not?

It will NOT cause errors. Tasks being started and stopped is a normal feature of BOINC. If you run more than one project (e.g., PrimeGrid and SETI), the tasks get automatically suspended every hour as BOINC switches back and forth between the two projects.

The only problem with using the suspend button is that if you have any tasks for a project (project as in "PrimeGrid"), BOINC won't download any more tasks for that project. So if you suspend, say, an SoB WU, BOINC won't download any SGS WUs for the challenge until that SoB WU is resumed.

As for what it's for... I'm not sure what its original intended purpose or use case was, but I can tell you what I use it for. Sometimes I want a particular WU to run for some reason, so if it's not running, I'll use the suspend button to temporarily stop the WUs that are running.

Well that kinda bites for Tim. Seems like the suspend should be specific to the task.

I understand why they do that, though. If you're running multiple projects, (PG and SETI, for example), and you want to suspend the PG task and finish the SETI task, the last thing you'd want BOINC to do is immediately download another PG task after you suspend the one that's currently running.

BOINC doesn't handle sub-projects very well, in a lot of ways. There's a lot of things I'd like to see changed in the BOINC client.

Vato,

This will work only if you are "raising" your cache limit, right. If you have a 2-day cache setting for example, going to 1-day for SGS would not work...I think.

First my apologies for hijacking the thread. Mods feel free to move or delete.

Secondly by changing the cache size and suspending the long running tasks I can get lots of SGS w/us. The trouble is I go off to work less than 12 hours after the challenge begins and return about after it ends. How do I persuade the computers to upload results while I am not there and with and indeterminate cache and some unfinished w/us

Thirdly I'm grateful for the suggestions of virtual machines and setting up further versions. I don''t think I dare risk that not least since some of the other computers are used by other people.

Cheers!

But raising from 2 days to 3 or 4 days would achieve the same thing, subject to being allowed to download sufficient WUs.

It's also possible to script occasional unsuspend-update-sleep-suspend cycles under linux using the boinccmd interface - no idea about windows.

(But to be honest, it's far easier to plan ahead and make sure you're finished with all long WUs well before a challenge starts - that's what I *normally* do)

A Friendly Reminder

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~15 minutes on fast/newer computers and 25+ minutes on slower/older computers. Although these are relatively short WU's, it is still important to monitor your machines for heat. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it.

Restricted airflow is one of the primary reasons for overheating. Take the time to monitor the fans and review the dust buildup. If needed, give your computer a good cleaning. It will thank you by running cooler and producing valid results. :) Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)

Cheers!

T

Simple. Add this line to the <options> section of your cc_config.xml file:

<report_results_immediately>1</report_results_immediately>

That will cause your computer to, well, do exactly what it says. :) That way, you won't need to be home at the end of the challenge to make sure your results get sent in time.

If you're not familiar with setting up that file, you can A) Google it to find the BOINC wiki that documents everything that can go in that file, or B) use the search feature of this forum to search for cc_config.xml for detailed instructions. If I wasn't in a hurry I could search the forums and then provide you a direct link to the info, but I'm feeling lazy right now.

Yup, if other people are using the computers (several of my crunchers are used by other family members, for example) it's not really feasible to be running VMs or dual boots. The only option there is, for next time, plan ahead and stop running long WUs far enough in advance so you don't have this problem. That's what I do, although it's really hard to squeeze in SoB WUs between the challenges.

24 hours to go!!!

Come join us at the peak of the Leonids for a 24 hour Challenge on the Sophie Germain Search (LLR) project. A Sophie Germain prime or even a twin prime may be waiting for you. :)

Please once again review the "Welcome" post as well as the "How to Join" post so you can be informed and make any last minute adjustments that are necessary.

A few hours before the Challenge, we begin to monitor the Meebo chat room at the bottom of the forum page. If at any time PrimeGrid becomes unresponsive, you can still access the Meebo chat room externally here: http://www.meebo.com/room/primegrid/

Before the start, the Subproject stats on the Server Status page will be disabled as will the 24 hour stats on the bottom of the front page. Also, the Top Primes Finder page will be disabled. This is all done to free up as much resources as possible to allow the server to send and receive work. With these short WU's and the increased competition, we expect a very high volume at start.

Stats will be available on the front page next to the clock within 30 minutes after the start.

BOINCstats provides hourly updates of Project Challenges. There you can view user and team credit and ranking trends.

ATTENTION!!!

If you haven't done any LLR WU's in the past month, please consider doing at least one WU before the Challenge start. A new LLR application was released last month that is substantially larger than the previous. Best choice would be to do a WU from PPS (LLR) as testing times are less than 10 minutes.

CORRECTION: You must do SGS (LLR) instead to make sure the correct application is downloaded. Run times are 15-30 minutes per task. Also, this only applies to Linux (32/64) and Mac (64) hosts.

"max cache" will be dropped to 16 tasks per core.

John,

I just got this message:

11/17/2010 10:52:22 AM PrimeGrid Message from server: This computer has reached a limit on tasks in progress

I have 16 WUs. So you've implemented this part of your "save the server!" strategy.

The problem is the CPU is a Q6600 -- a quad core CPU.

Four cores. 16 WUs per core is 64, not 16.

This is the same behavior I've seen in every challenge so far. The setting you're using is effective as a per-computer limit, not per-core.

Or at least that's how it's always worked on my computers. This being BOINC, afterall, who knows what it's doing on a different configuration.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with 16 WUs per computer, per core, per IP, or whatever. Maybe there's another setting you could use to make it per-core, or maybe it just doesn't work right, or maybe (and this is my preference) this setting is what will work to help keep the server up, so don't change it.

But you probably aught to update the documentation to reflect the fact that the effective limit (for whatever reason) is actually 16 WUs per system.

(Of course, this could be problematic for one of those new fancy dual Gulftown-based XEON servers with 24 threads. Fortunately, there probably aren't a whole lot of those around, and for this challenge, they're actually better off running 12 threads instead of the full 24. Quick note of advice to people with hyperthreaded CPUs: For an LLR challenge, such as this one, unless you're going to micro-manage the workflow at the end of the challenge, you probably should set "Use at most xxx% of the processors" to 50%, effectively turning off Hyperthreading. You may get one or more extra WUs completed in time to count for the challenge that way.)

I can see the same limit of 16 tasks per computer. Both the Quad and the laptop with two cores (just one core available to BOINC) have 16 tasks and can't get more.

Is it possible this new application is on Linux only? There i saw some bigger downloads (~25 MB). On Windows it was only small ones.
And i haven't done any LLR on those hosts recently.

Is it possible this new application is on Linux only? There i saw some bigger downloads (~25 MB). On Windows it was only small ones.
And i haven't done any LLR on those hosts recently.

Sorry, I updated the original post with more info. This only applies to Linux (32/64) and Mac (64) hosts. They are using the new 25MB LLR (3.8.4) while Windows (32/64) and Mac (32) are using older and much smaller LLR versions

"max cache" will be dropped to 16 tasks per core.

Yes, I need to correct that. Thanks for pointing it out. Max cache has been raised to 32 for now.

EDIT: It has been changed back to per core.

Yep it took 3 minutes to get my first task (and I saw the server load was way up over 30...). Just finished first 2 (iMac core 2 duo) in 12:11. I spent the 10 minutes or so just before the start with the computer off, vacuuming the dust out from around it and from the vents.
Cheers and best wishes,

late? - only me ;)

My crunchers began the challenge with scripting in a matter like the test-runs in the past.
Max there was a delay of 2min 40 sek for first request - but all get work with first request.

So have fun with race - cu on stats ...

Well, it seems I am having a problem. I have a 2-core computer and currently, both cores are running SOB and are about 1/3 of the way finished. I cannot get BOINC to download any SGS work for the challenge. I tried increasing my cache to one day and then suspending the two SOB tasks - no luck. Is there anything else I should try?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

First of all let those SoB's crunch when asking for new work.

If the rest duration time to complete in BOINC Manager for those 2 tasks together is more than 20 days: No Way
Is it e.g. 18 days increase your workbuffer to 10.
Is it 16 days increase your workbuffer to 9.

Good luck

It is about 350 hours total, but my average daily run time hovers around 50%. IS that what is doing me in?

Well, it seems I am having a problem. I have a 2-core computer and currently, both cores are running SOB and are about 1/3 of the way finished. I cannot get BOINC to download any SGS work for the challenge. I tried increasing my cache to one day and then suspending the two SOB tasks - no luck. Is there anything else I should try?

Thanks,
Jim

Burn Ubuntu on a 1Gb Flash drive, Then Boot from the Flash Drive Load Boinc and go (In the Test Ubuntu mode it will load into memory only) Bit slower but works.
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

Or Ubuntu's Wubi installer - It will run Ubuntu in windows
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer

Or Dual Boot Ubuntu with Windows ----- It will be installed on the Hard Drive.

PM me if you need more help

Jim, if you only have 350 hours left between your two SOB tasks, you might want to try setting the work buffer to 10 days to see if you can get some SGS LLR work. (It should work since you said 350 hours total.) If the run time left for each task is 350 hours, then this will not work. Personally, I would recommend setting up a virtual machine using Ubuntu for the future. It's is very easy to do and comes in handy for challenges.

Did the 10 day setting. No good. This is the first time I have run into this. Just luck I guess. I will look into Ubantu between challenges. Is it available for a PC AND a Mac?

Since a MAC is a normal PC - that is if you have x86-technology inside - with EFI instead of a BIOS plus a lot of propaganda/marketing you could go with every Linux-distribution that supports EFI-boot. Seems like you need rEFIt and you could go.

I believe Ubuntu's CDs natively support booting on a Mac; having no personal experience with Macs I've never heard of EFI before, but I do know that the Ubuntu LiveCD is supposed to be able to boot on a Mac as-is.

I am getting PPS LLR WU not SGP LLR WU for the challenge. Someone may want to double check the server settings. I thought all other sub projects are supposed to be off-line during the challenge.

No. It is the user's responsibility to select the proper sub-project in the preferences.

If I have a prime reported and that creates a Prover-account for me, does Primegrid get that password? Is a Primegrid email assigned to it? Is there some way to edit it and should I?

In short, yes, yes, yes, and yes. :) As you have already discovered, simply request a new password from the Prime Pages and the process begins. :)

I got one in August, which was part of the HUGE batch that didn't get submitted when they were processed earlier in the year.

It's also 200700 digits.

Most (all???) of these should be 200700 digits long, since they all have the same (or almost the same) 'n', which is the exponent in the equation.

Within the set of all positive integers which have 200700 digits, the values cover a fairly large range -- specifically, the highest number in the set is 10 times larger than the smallest. Since this is a HUGE number, by any standard, it's therefore possible for different numbers, all having 200700 digits, to fall in quite different locations within the top 5000 primes list.

FWIW, my first (and so far only) SGS prime, reported 8/17 this summer, entered at position 2120 and is currently at 2981.

Those can be ignored. What you're seeing is the nominal process of the BOINC server and client resyncing themselves after a request gets timed out.

No action is necessary on your part, no data was lost, and nothing is broken.

Hmmm...

I gor one just before the challenge started but have received no "the email". How do you guys rate? :-)

Jim

I'm not certain, but I think you only get the email if you're the first discover. You may have been the double checker, in which case it doesn't get reported to the list, and therefore there's no need for an email.

So, we rate because of, um, one or more of:

A) Our computers are faster
B) Our wingman's computers are slower :)
C) We run with smaller cache sizes, therefore reporting the result back before the wingman with the huge cache (*)
D) (This is the important one) We're luckier!

Mike

* This one actually involves a tradeoff. On the one hand, having a big cache prevents your computer from running dry when it can't communicate with PrimeGrid for any reason. Conversely, the bigger the cache, the longer the delay until your computer starts crunching the WU, and hence a larger opportunity for your wingman to beat you to the finish line and claim the prize. For short WU's, a small cache is more significant than a fast computer, whereas the opposite is true for the really long WUs.

Less than 45 minutes remain!

Time to get those last tasks turned in and start emptying the cache. For those "moving on" after the Challenge it's best to abort the remaining tasks in your cache that are not in progress. For those remaining, continue on as usual. :)

Please update your clients early and often to get those completed WU's reported and counted. Don't wait till the end with a large cache of results to submit.

Mike,

But at some future time, the result will appear in the Primegrid list, right?

Once they turn the prime list page back on, and whatever processing needs to be done happens, then yes, it will show up.

Both the original and the double check finds show up on both your personal prime page, and on the big page that shows how much everyone has found. For the purpose of tabulating a 'score', the double check discoveries count for 50%.

Preliminary data

What a splendid show for both the Leonids and the Challenge. Thanks to the two prep runs, settings were fine-tuned for this Challenge. As such, no major issues were encountered. :) The validator did fall substantially behind but that didn't affect challenge score.

Once again, it was exciting to see the top 2 teams go neck and neck to the wire. And through the top 100 users, there are many positions separated by a single task. So far, no luck with finding a Sophie Germain or twin prime, but there were over 70 single primes returned during the Challenge...exceeding our expectation. A lot of processing is left to do on the found primes so there's still a chance. :) Thank you to everyone who participated.

EDIT: Over 110 primes after the validator caught up. Therefore greatly exceeding our expectations. :D

While the Challenge is officially over, the "clean up" process now begins. If you have the resources to help, please see: The "Clean Up" Phase below. All that is required is to continue crunching Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) to complete the aborted and timed-out resends.

Official results are probably 6-10 days away, but here is some preliminary data to ponder. :)

Approximately 719.3K tasks were completed resulting in over 6.1M Challenge points awarded. While not a record amount of work for an LLR Challenge, it was still quite substantial.

221 teams and 1444 individuals participated in the Challenge.

Thank you to everyone. We appreciate your participation and hope you had fun!

The preliminary top 5 in each category are listed below. Note: scores are not final as tasks later determined to be invalid will be deducted from the total score.

The "Clean Up" Phase

Past observation has shown that a quick "clean up" phase is primarily based on how many "timed out" tasks there are. We expect this to be a relatively quick "clean up". Immediately after the Challenge, the initial "clean up" handles all the aborted tasks. Then, for the next 3 days, "timed out" tasks are the focus of the "clean up". After those 3 days, then tasks that have "timed out" twice will be the focus...and so on. The Challenge will not be considered final until all quorums affecting scoring positions are completed.

The dilemma of only doing Challenge tasks is that after the initial "clean up" of aborted tasks, the buffer would remain at 0 until a "timed out" task was returned. Hosts that only have SGS (LLR) selected would sit idle until a "timed out" task was recycled. Therefore, work is always made available to keep hosts from going idle.

A couple of measures are taken to maximize the opportunity for Challenge tasks to be sent out first and to minimize new work. First, new work will have a longer deadline. The task with the shorter deadline will be crunched first. Second, the buffer will be set initially at 10K so that at most, there's only 10K new tasks at any given time.

If one participates in the "clean up", almost certainly new work will be processed. To minimize this, observe the following key times:

  • Any time the Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) buffer on the front page is above 10K, resends are available.
  • Most work sent out right after the Challenge completes will be recycled "aborted tasks"...most likely for the first 24-48 hours.
  • 3 days (21 Nov 18:00 UTC) after the Challenge completes, another wave of resends typically are available ("timed out" from abandoned tasks at the end of the Challenge).

As long as the buffer on the front page is at 10K or below, there's enough resources participating in the "clean up". Additional resources will not speed up the process.

We greatly appreciate any help in the "clean-up" process. However, we fully understand the need/desire to "move on".

I am staying for the cleanup ;) at least until after the weekend.

It was a nice challenge. Too bad 3 of my dualcores fell a bit dry in the night (learned some settings don't work properly), but I will be there again in December for a new try.

I finished all the tasks I had that counted for the wing man and aborted the rest. I do have one slow computer that will take a while to finish the relevant tasks.

Clean up Progress

The validator has finally caught up and the buffer is approaching 10K. It's shaping up to be a very quick "clean up". Considering there were over 719K tasks completed during the Challenge, these numbers are excellent.

Currently there are 6131 outstanding Challenge tasks, of which, 4213 are in scoring positions...affecting the outcome in 5 team positions and 36 individual positions.

Thanks to everyone for helping out with the clean up.

This is the first time I have taken part in a challenge so please forgive the noob questions

Helping with the clean up.

1. How will I know when the clean up has finished?
2. Where on the front page can I see the 10k? been looking and its not obvious to me Lol.
3. What does it mean when the result is invalid?

It's in the big grey box on the home page. To the left of that box you'll see "Available" counts showing how many workunits are currently available for consumption on each subproject; for instance, the SGS LLR count is:
Available: Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) 3934
This includes new workunits that have never been crunched before, as well as resends from expired/aborted/etc. Challenge workunits (or even some from before the Challenge, though these are comparatively few). Every hour or so (possible more often, I'm not entirely sure) this cache is topped off to 10,000 with new workunits; resends become available immediately upon their being expired/aborted/etc. If there are any resends in the cache, those will be handed out preferentially to new tasks. Thus, if the cache is above 10,000 at any given time, you are sure to get a resend (i.e. help with the cleanup); otherwise, it's a grab bag scenario, and you're most likely (but not guaranteed) to get a fresh task.

1. It will be posted in this topic when finished
2. On the main page you can see how much units are available for each project. When the number on SGS units is less dan 10.000 there is enough capacity for the clean up.
3. When a result is invalid it means the calculation is invalid. Each unit is calculated twice by different computers. If the results are the same it is valid. If the results are not the same, one (or two) of the calculations are invalid.

To add to what the others said, if *your* computer has an invalid result, that's an indication that your CPU is running a bit too hot and/or is at least slightly unstable. This is when your result is marked as "invalid" and you got zero credits. Being marked "inconclusive" is not the same thing -- for inconclusive results you just need to wait.

If you got one invalid result out of hundreds, it might not mean anything. But if you have more than one, it's worth looking into why that happened:

1) If you're overclocking, back off on the overclocking.

2) Open up the computer and clean out the dust and gunk. That can have serious effects on the computer. Cleaning it out will lengthen its lifespan.

(note: If the primegrid app is faulty, as recently happened with 32 bit macs, it's possible for the correct result to be marked as invalid if the other two results were from computers running the faulty app. This is pretty rare, however.)

Thanks Michael Goetz for your help.

I have 2 invalid out of some 370 results. However only today I bumped up the CPU from 2000 Mhz to 2200 Mhz. That may be the reason so will drop it back to 2000 :)

Clean up Progress

The clean up is going well. Buffer on front page (Available: Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR)) has been lowered to 4K. There are plenty of resources available. Therefore, please consider switching to PPS (LLR) to help restore some of the Prime Pages gap that was achieved before the Challenge. :)

Currently there are 261 outstanding Challenge tasks, of which, 179 are in scoring positions...affecting the outcome in 0 team positions and 3 individual positions.

Thanks to everyone for helping out with the clean up.

The results are Final!

The results were final just before the US holiday weekend so now here's the summary write-up. The fears of Leonids being a troubling Challenge for having "short" tasks were put to rest. However, the validator did fall substantially behind but that didn't affect challenge score.

Over 100 single primes were returned during the Challenge...greatly exceeding our expectation. Unfortunately, no luck with finding a Sophie Germain or twin prime.

Approximately 719.3K tasks were completed resulting in over 6.1M Challenge points awarded. While not a record amount of work for an LLR Challenge, it was still quite substantial. To give a little perspective about the load the server experienced, here are the top 5 Challenges in regards to tasks completed in a 24 hour period:

550K tasks 15 March 2009 PPS LLR Ides Of March
719K tasks 18 November 2010 SGS LLR Leonids
745K tasks 2-3 October 2009 PPS LLR Harvest Festival
800K tasks 14-17 February 2010 PPS LLR Year of the Tiger
813K tasks 25 July 2010 PPSE LLR Full Moon

221 teams and 1444 individuals participated in the Challenge.

Congratulations to Team Norway as the top team and shanky123 as the top individual. Remember, the top 100 individual and top 50 team places earn points for this Challenge.

Thank you again to everyone. We appreciate your participation and hope to see you at 2010's final Challenge, The Winter Solstice. Come join us 18-21 December for 3 days on the Proth Prime Search (Sieve) application! As this year's only GPU application Challenge, it's sure to light the solstice fires!!!

When are the final results for all participants going to be shown in the challenge. Even though I am not in the top 10 it would be good to know how many credits I crunched over the 24 hrs period and whether I moved up or down from 375th position :)

At present on the main page under the challenge it is still showing as 24th November 2010 as the last time this challenge was updated.

OK.

It just feels that the full 24 hrs worth of crunching has not been taken into account.

During the challenge I used all 4 of my CPU's, since then been using 3 which turn a regular 3000 + credits per day around.

We will use the "prime score" method which is based on the n value (k*b^n-1) to score the challenge.

That is, the "Score" on the challenge stats page isn't in cobblestones, your everyday BOINC credit.
