Hi there.
I am new here, but I was wondering if there is a complete app_info that I can download for all apps that are currently used by the project.
System:
I7-860
Win7-64
GTX480
Thanks. |

This isn't complete and I don't know if there is too much in the file, but it's what I use for an x64 machine I have and it works for me.
I use the file because I am running a GTX 470.
If anyone wants to add to it, I'll update and post.

Did you have done this game also for a linux64-host with cuda23?
I want to let run PPS as cuda23 and a further subproject on cpu. I have problems to find the right exec-files because most if not all llr-projects use the same exec-files.
Sophie Germain LLR = PPS LLR = 6.06
Woodall Prime LLR = Cullen Prime LLR = 321 Prime LLR = Prime Sierpinski LLR = 6.03
SoB = The Riesel LLR = 6.05
Prime Sierpinski Sieve = 321 Sieve = The Riesel Sieve = 1.07
Proth Prime Sieve = 1.20 or 1.30-cuda23
Cullen/Woodall Sieve = 1.12

This is only for a Windows x64 machine.
If you have run any of the applications before on the client you can see how it is configured in the client_state.xml file. You can then copy the sections to the app_info.xml file.

This is my app_info.xml for linux64 with cuda23. There are entries for all open subprojects and this list contains at the end also two entries for "Proth Prime Search (Sieve)", one for cpu and a second for cuda23.

Thank you, rroonnaalldd, for that huge file. I'm using it myself now!
One thing I had to change: psp_sr2sieve_20080827.sieveinput is not available. Rather than work on removing each instance of the file, I removed all file size entries and created a zero-size file for this application. Since we're not doing PSP Sieve anymore, that should work in most cases; it certainly works for me. :)

Ahh, thanks for the reminder. I knew, i forgot something but i could not remember what.
The shortest solution would be to delete all file entries of "psp_sr2sieve_20080827.sieveinput". The file "psp_sr2sieve_20100629.sieveinput" is the follower and i got valid units without the file from 2008.

And another problem. Looks like the LLR apps are changing so quickly (for PPS LLR, for instance) that the old app_info.xml file can't keep up. I'll probably drop it for the duration of the next race.

With great thanks to rroonnaalldd for doing most of the work, these are the changes I made to the cuda version to get it working for me.
Some different filenames and values did the trick. I changed the avg_ncpus and max_ncpus to 1, since that seems to be what is actually used on my machine and it suits how I want to run it.
I also have to make sure I started the boinc client with the appropriate environment variables set for the OpenCL app to find the SDK.
C2D with an HD4670 under Ubuntu 10.04 x86_x64 using Catalyst 10.10 drivers and the 2.2 SDK.

Vato you are reserving one complete core for GPU-work. Why?
My linux64-dualcore calculating 2 llr-units on CPU and a third sieve-unit on GPU in the same time. With your ncpus-setting that would result in one unit on CPU and a second on GPU.
You need only at Einstein@H an entire core while you crunches a gpu-unit because there app calculated only the FFT-routines on GPU and the rest on CPU.

I'm reserving 1 CPU because that's the amount that the ATI OpenCL app uses on my platform. I'd quite happily reduce it if the app wasn't so CPU hungry, but it just makes the other CPU WUs thrash with each other. Sounds like there's a busy-wait in there somewhere, but I'm not smart enough to delve deeper.

I've now done the equivalent changes for the remaining LLR projects to get them all to wrapper 6.09 and llr 3.8.4_final - works fine. I also added the new TRP sieve file for that project.
I'll test removing all the unnecessary file_info entries, and then I'll post the complete app_info.xml here unless rroonnaalldd beats me to it :-)

I would do it but i am confused about some of the needed changes. Maybe you can bring the light on me.
My problem is the tag <open_name>. In the past we need the following:
<file_ref>
<file_name>primegrid_llr_wrapper_6.09_i686-pc-linux-gnu</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
<file_ref>
<file_name>primegrid_sllr_3.8.4_final_i686-pc-linux-gnu</file_name>
<open_name>primegrid_cllr_3.7.1c.orig</open_name>
</file_ref>
Do we need this renaming in filename of the LLR-app or not?

I have left the <open_name> tag alone - not least as this matches what is seen in client_state.xml on my other machines that don't run app_info.xml.
I am just going to clean out some of the unneeded <file_info> sections e.g. sieve file not needed for an llr app, etc. It will make the app_info.xml shorter, and more easily understood, but won't change any of the behaviour.

I changed the download location for my app_info files (linux32/64 with/without cuda/ati) to a new server to http://primegrid.pytalhost.net/. There are no app-lists and all files have to downloaded manually from http://www.primegrid.com/download/.

Yes, for Linux32/64 with all projects for Cuda, ATI and CPU-only.
Maybe i am able to do this also for Win32 but it could be a shorttime solution. Ken was doing his great job also for GCW-Sieve (Cuda) and all Windows based LLR-projects are still waiting for the new wrapper-app...

Maybe Vato can help with his host 156321. W7-64 with "NVIDIA GeForce G 103M (493MB) driver: 25896"

That host only runs a few hours per day, and I'm not often there when it is running.
A G103M takes ~8 hours to do a PPS Sieve WU, so it'd be pretty long winded.
So, I'll see if I can manage it, but don't hold your breath, as I can't commit to anything.

So when will this be available to run under normal BOINC/PG jobs and not have to be done via the app file?

Question: once the new cuda gcwsieve is available via primegrid as a normal process, how will you set up the prime grid preferences so that we can choose to get the new gcw or continue with the pps gpus?
Right now, because pps is the only available gpu just marking the choice to send work from any sub project gets the gpu pps but I see an issue in the very near future.
Was just wondering.
Thanks

He does not lack in the windows file app_info coprocs?
Because I tried WB is apparently trying to calculate all the units at the same time ... and plus it does not appear in the Tasks tab ...

I wrote another app_info for Win32 and according to "NullCoding" >>Ok, I'm through with being a P.I.T.A here - rrrronald's done it, thanks for the app_info template. I had made a similar one but left out some things and had a few things, like <coproc> marked incorrectly.<< it works:

I have updated all xml-files for using in Linux32/64 with all PG-projects for Cuda/ATI/CPU-only.
Each download contains now a readme-file with download locations for necessary files and a list of files which needs exec-rights.
All files are downloadable from http://primegrid.pytalhost.net/.
PS: If anybody finds an error and i mean really only for errors, please PMing me at PG.

Please try http://primegrid.pytalhost.net/windows/app_info_llr-321_llr-SOB_win32.xml
Looks promising, but I should have explained more in my earlier post, I need it to run along side the tpsieve NVIDIA CUDA GPU WU's too ... Can I just add the tpsieve app info to the top of that file or ? ... Thanks

I tried the file, didn't work for what ever reason, kept trying to download some of the lllr 321 files even though I manually put the files in the pg projects directory & didn't do anything with the tpsieve Wu's except abort all the ones I already had. I'm no app guru so I don't know what to tell you, I went back to just running the tpsieve Wu's for now ... Thanks again for your effort, Steve

Sounds great but I must ask, will any of these run on an old nvidia geforce 9500gt or do they require double precision cards.
cheers and great work!!!

Wow, brilliant! You've done an amazing amount of work here.
So far I've only tested it with:
- 321 Prime Search (Sieve) on CPU only
- Proth Prime Search (sieve) on GPU only
but after installing app_info.xml and the full file package it took off and ran right where it left off.
I do have one question just to be sure I understand this. If I want my GPU to run ONLY Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) all I have to do is remove the pps_sr2sieve section from app_info.xml after all pps sieve work is done? [edit] leaving "send work from any subproject . . ." still checked [/edit]
All CPU apps should still run normally?
If the answer is 'yes' to the above, is there any way to comment out (REM) that section from app_info without deleting it?
Thank you rroonnaalldd for all of your hard work! |

I think with my app_info's you don't need the setting "Send work from any subproject ..." anymore. You can select all subprojects directly. Maybe you need this setting only, if you have a small WU-cache and/or you want to prevent a dry running host because no work is available. Primegrid is one of the most stable projects and only in rare times there is no work available for a given subproject.
PS: I wouldn't use the CPU for TP/CWPsieve anymore. GPUs are so much faster for doing the same work. You have more time to let some LLR-projects run in parallel.
PPS: If you want to crunch both projects also on CPU, you must combine the entries yourself. Maybe I find some time to do this itself later this month.
PPPS: Don't change the app's whilst you have open units for older applications or you are in a long running unit. If an app_info doesn't contains the needed entries for the units on a given host, this work will be deleted immediately and you have no chance to restore this!!! Disabled network access for Boinc and a backup of your entire boinc folders before changing can prevent this.

That's right, but GeneferCUDA will be used only by PSA PRPNet Projects and not directly by a PG subproject. Maybe this will come in the future but not now and today. ;)

Thanks. I guess when I have some free time I'll try it both ways; with a small cache just in case. Agreed about this being a very stable project. Quite impressive really.
All the rest is understood. And thanks again for the hard work. |
|
|
|
Without all the work rroonnaalldd and others have done this project wouldn't have taken form so thank you for all your work and effort!
As with the pps sieve gpu that was first tested and ironed out using an app file and then ported over to pg/boinc, when do you see these being moved and available for "general" use without the aid of the app file?
Again, great great work !!

I take it Rytis or someone will have to port them to Boinc for us to use/test from PG? I don't have the app_file running.
Thanks.. I tell ya, you gotta love the hard work being done to make these run!!

The project doesn't want to give me any sort of Cache for the gcw cuda sieve Wu's running the app file, at best I get about a 20 Minute Cache no matter what I set my Contact time to. Woke up this morning with both Box's running the Wu's sitting Idle, finally I started getting 4 Wu's at a time & would only get 1 more after I turned in 1, so at that point I only had a 4-5 Minute Cache to work with.
I've reset the Project, increased the flops for the gcw's, set my Contact to 1 Day but I still only get enough Wu's to barley get by on, ATM Both Box's are sitting Idle again ... I do see on the Front Page the GCW's are at 0 available right now ...
PS: Switched on PPS for both Box's and same thing, only get 4 Wu's and don't get anymore until those are finished & then get 4 more ...

But i have only a little GT240(GT215) on my linux-box with DotschUX1.2/x86-64...

Right now I have 200 gcw's on 1 Box, the Max allowed by the Project, the other Box running gcw's has 4, it has to finish those 4 before another 4 will download. That's about how it was all day yesterday.
But yesterday evening after I posted about the low cache level somebody must have kicked the wu generator cause over 6000 all of a sudden showed up again on the front page. Both box's filled to the max but now this morning again 1 of the box's is struggling for work again even though there's over 20,000 gcw's showing as being available ... :/

@Steve:
I'm just curious, what is the duration correction factor for PrimeGrid on that machine?
If it's something small like 0.0..... we still have to live with a years old BOINC-bug.
4 solutions:
1. (temporary) Increase that factor to 1.00000 (after a day you'll have the same problem.
2. The project should lower the estimated runtime.
3. DA should solve the bug and
4. Buy slower cards ;)

I've been playing with the DCF but it doesn't do any good, increasing it to 1.000000 wasn't working, bringing it down to 0.001150 doesn't work either even though that's about where it should be.
Right now I have 4 on 1 Box & about 20 on another of the gcw's, slow isn't in my Vocabulary so that's out too ... ;P

I ended up with 1 WU per request when testing the GCW CUDA app because the DCF reached 0.01. You can try to change it back to 0.05 or 0.1. The initial source of the problem was that I've forgotten to change the flops value in the app_info.xml to more appropriate values for my card.

I fixed the Low Cache Problem, I just took rroonnaalldd's app file out of the project Directory for the heck of it, left everything else there. Wallah a 200 Wu Cache of gcw's in a few minutes & it's held there ever since. I tried putting something in the FLOP's Value other than the 1000000000.000000 that was there, used 3000000000.000000 but didn't seem to make any difference, what should I have put in the Micro ???
Only problem is now I can only run 1 Wu @ a time but at least I have work for those 2 Box's, will have my Ruby Badge by nightfall and then I can go back to the tpsieve Wu's if I want to ...

I added two zeros before the dot. The 10^9 from the app_info was definitely not high enough. I ran the Winter Solstice Challenge with a setting of 907200000000 (Core Clock in MHz * 2 * Number of SPs * 2 instructions per cycle-> 675*10^6*2*336*2 - I even forgot that my card was running @725 MHz out of the box...) for my GTX 460 and 3400000000 (Clock rate) for the CPU and had no problems with runtime estimations*. GCW CUDA with 10^12 lead to problems but 10^11 worked.
In the last days I didn't use any app_infos. I'm not eager to toast the pair of SoB WUs thats running on my box...
*Your mileage may vary. The GPU was actually clocked a little bit higher in these three days ;)

Only thing I don't like running without an app file is that the CPU Usage is set at 0.42 on the gcw's & 0.31 on the tpsieve's. The Wu's run slower that way & you effectively lose the use of 2 CPU Cores also that way ...

Some clarification to the <flops>-values in my app_info's.
The entry 1e11 is a standard value and also used by Collatz and DnetC. All TPsieve entries have this value and i changed this for CWPsieve to 1e08 after a posting by Rick Reynolds.
But that is not the real problem for CWP. The lowered <flops> value should only correct the to optimistic <rsc_fpops_bound> value inside a CWP-wu from project-side. My aim was to give a user more time to complete a WU without getting a "time exceeded" message after ~1100sec.
I posted workunit entries from a CWP- and a TPsieve unit in the thread CW GPU Sieve crashes. I have done this before PG went into maintenance a few hours ago. Note: Both units were validated.
Strange for me is the CPU time for the CWP-unit. 265.89sec sounds a little bit to much for <avg_ncpus>0.020000</avg_ncpus> and <max_ncpus>0.020000</max_ncpus>.
But maybe the following news New Einstein@Home Radio Pulsar Search and NVIDIA GPU Code answered this. "Bruce Allen" wrote:
Einstein@Home is beginning a new round of searching for radio pulsars in short-orbital-period binary systems.
This is accompanied by the release of a new application (called BRP3). The new application is particularly efficient on NVIDIA Graphics Processor Cards (up to a factor of 20 faster than the CPU-only application). In addition, when running on an NVIDIA GPU card, this new application makes very little use of the CPU (typically around 20% CPU use when the GPU is devoted to Einstein@Home).
The NVIDIA GPU application is initially available for Windows and Linux only. We hope to have a Macintosh version available soon. Due to limitations in the NVIDIA drivers, the Linux version still makes heavy use of the CPU. This will be fixed in Spring 2011, when a new version of the NVIDIA Driver is released. Many thanks to NVIDIA technical support for their assistance!
Because we have exhausted the backlog of data from Arecibo Observatory, this new application is being shipped with data from the Parkes Multibeam Pulsar Survey (from the Parkes Radio Telescope in Australia). In the next weeks we expect to also start using this new application on fresh Arecibo data taken with the latest 'Mock Spectrometer' back-end.

I threw together an app file using your app file and another one somebody else gave me a week or so ago. It allows for running of either the tpsieve or gcw GPU Wu's or both at the same time plus you can run any of the PG CPU Wu's too, if you want to take a look at it PM me & I'll give it to you later.
So far it's worked on every Box I've tried it on (Win XP Pro SP2 64-Bit) all you have to do is set up Seperate Preference for each Host if you want to run different CPU Wu's with the tpsieve or gcw GPU Wu's ...

It's OK Steve* I just had to Abort 18 Seventeen or Bust work units due to over fetching issues on one host, so you will have a few more to play with.
Also 16 Woodall, 18 Cullen, 23 Sierpinski and a heap of others.

@ rroonnaalldd
Just like to say thanks for the app_info.xml file, works a treat, didn't lose any work from any sub-project when I installed it and was able to get my CPU usage by the GPU down from 0.8 CPU to 0.05 CPU a huge improvement.
Now 4 CPU tasks can run as well as the GPU.
Great work, especially as I didn't have to work out all the file names in order to do it myself.

Thanks for your efforts - I've used your app_info.xml as a template to add an entry for my self compiled 32 bit cwpsieve (gcwsieve/CUDA 3.2) into my app_info.xml. Even with the plain-vanilla stock apps, the 32 bit compiled binaries seem to have a tiny advantage over their 64 bit counterparts.

Not sure if it's the new app or my pc is just running better but the latest pps sieves I've done have all been quite a bit faster the last few days. Probably averaging 15 - 20 seconds per wu faster. That might not sound like much but it seems like a lot to me. |

All files could be downloaded at http://primegrid.pytalhost.net.
PS: If you find errors and i mean really only for errors, please PMing me at PG. I will correct this asap.

I updated all xml files for AVX.
You find now versions for Win32 and Linux64 with Cuda, ATI (OpenCL) and CPU-only. For Mac i have only the original AVX-app with app_info from PG available.
All files could be downloaded at http://primegrid.pytalhost.net.

Please be aware. There is a little difference in the "app_info.xml" for Win32 between the original PG-app and the app i got from Rebirther.
For the original PG-app with app_info-windows.xml wrote John a posting in thread AVX build of llr (20%-50% faster). This renaming is only needed for the application-name (llravx.exe) in PG's "app_info.xml".
If you use my "app_info.xml" and only the PG-app, then the app-name (llr3.8.6dev_windows_avx.exe) is correct.
I have written a readme-file in every app_info on my site.
AVX on Windows needs at least the SP1 for W7 or W2k8-R2!

I created new xml files for AVX on Linux32. The needed app is inside the package and according to Gary via PM it works.
All files could be downloaded at http://primegrid.pytalhost.net.

I've noticed a strange phenomenon after starting to use app_info.xml:
After restarting boinc, "Measured floating point speed" and "Measured integer speed " get set to 1000 million ops/sec.
I've also seen some wingman hosts with those same settings.
Here's one, surely capable of much more than that:
http://www.primegrid.com/show_host_detail.php?hostid=192407
Running cpu benchmarks will solve the problem.
So, if you see granted credit dramatically drop on a given subproject, check that info at the host page and run a cpu benchmark to solve it.
Additionally if you move from project stock files to app_info builds, run a cpu benchmark before restart crunching. |

I have W7 64-bit, should I use the win32 version or stay away from these app_info's?

I suggest to stay away from those.
If you 'hit' the correct files for your rig / OS
you are the lucky one..
IMHO : If you are a 'tester' .. go ahead
.. if you want to find a prime or help out sieving
stay with your last stable version and wait a for a while

The new apps are not officially released by PG for Linux and Windows.
Rebirther's app_info works only with Sandy Bridge!
The app itself doesn't work on Bulldozer like before and in dependence of the used sub-project like SGS, you will get rounding errors on older CPU-architectures like Core2.
This was reported in the thread AMD FX X8 8120 not working with AVX! and such rounding errors are viewable by units with a short runtime of ~6 seconds.

Correct! If anyone has been tested a TRP let me know if this was done successfully... |

Another tweak for the flop counts and cpu usage:
<avg_ncpus>0.120000</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>0.120000</max_ncpus>
<flops>2.1e10</flops>
The flop counts better match the runtimes.
I have not been tested yet cpu usage vs. pps sieve with the 0.12 value. GCW Sieve doesnt affected current values. |

Correct! If anyone has been tested a TRP let me know if this was done successfully...
I've only crunched TRP WUs using AVXllr on my i7-2700K Win7 box:
http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=241956808
http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=241951798
http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=241915727
http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=241918614
Of course with minimum quorum and initial replication at 1 I'm not sure this helps validate the results?
Previously they were taking c. 25k-26k seconds.

I updated all xml-files for AVX on Linux32. I deleted my Linux32-app because the original PG-app with Linux64 in the name works also on 32bit-systems.
All files could be downloaded at http://primegrid.pytalhost.net.
I am still working on an app_info for Mac.
PS: If you find errors, please send a PM in PG. I will correct this asap.

rroonnaalldd can you make a app_info file with all LLR-AVX-Apps and all Cuda-Apps (Genefer too) for win?
Or is there still one?

Not in the moment. I think about a redesign of all Cuda-related app_infos.
We have normal CUDA-apps with compute-capability 1.0 and Genefer/LLR with >=cc1.3...
Thanks Rebirther for your work.

I need some try and error to get it run, but now it works.
Thank You

Thomas11 found another mem-leak for non-base-2 tests and Jean updated his source today.
I recompiled AVX and non-AVX apps for Linux32/64 from devsource v3.8.7.
Be aware, that the readme files in my app_info-xml's points now to the older PG-downloads. I hope Lennart or John updating the AVX-package on the PG server.
If not then you can use my apps but you must either change all llr-app entries from:
64bit-apps
sllr3.8.6dev_linux64_avx => sllr3.8.7dev_linux64_avx
primegrid_sllr_3.8.6_i686-pc-linux-gnu => sllr3.8.7dev_linux64
32bit-apps
sllr3.8.6dev_linux64_avx => sllr3.8.7dev_linux32_avx
primegrid_sllr_3.8.6_i686-pc-linux-gnu => sllr3.8.7dev_linux32
or
you simple rename the new apps to the old entries.
Both should work and you have to use the right app!!
The PG download contained in the past an AVX-package that works on 32bit- and 64bit-systems. I don't know what the new package will contains.
For LLR on 64bit this has to be changed because the 64bit-app performs a little bit better. You should see 10% shorter computation times for the nonAVX-app.
All files could be downloaded at http://primegrid.pytalhost.net.
I am still working on an app_info for Mac.
PS: If you find errors, please send a PM in PG. I will correct this asap.
