A few details about TRP LLR

This is what we were able to conclude/speculate from our investigation from the previous effort:

  • The best we can determine is that the sieve file was sieved to about 7.9P
  • LLRNet was used for first pass tests and BOINC was used for double checking
  • LLRNet for most k's reached n=3M; BOINC may have reached n=2M in the DC effort
  • There were 269 outstanding tests n<3M in LLRNet
  • 2 k's were searched to 4M+; 3 k's were searched to about 3.6M; these k's will essentially be double checked
  • We have residues for about 10% of the work done n<3M and about 90% for n>3M. It is still our hope to receive more. :)

We chose 3M as the starting point in hopes of finding 1-2 primes before 4M. We will also be making occasional backtracks into the 2M-3M range to double check. Based on this graph, it is possible that 1 to 2 primes might have been passed over.

The benefit of finding primes early is to reduce the need for double checking and also to reduce the sieve file. We hope that starting at 3M gives us a good opportunity of achieving that benefit.

Do you have a plan for LLR testing?

See a TRP LLR application in the list...my question is - when? ;-)

AFAIK you, it will be very soon...

Checking it...

Btw, does anyone know, how long should it be? BMgr shows about 5 hours...so as long as sieve.

TRP LLR has started.

Indeed - it's also listed on the top of the home page.

I must say I find this quite surprising. I was under the impression we were going to sieve to about 1P before starting LLR, which would mean we're about two-thirds of the way.

Anyway, I downloaded a couple of the tasks and they arrived with an estimated completion time of 50 hrs each.
Edit - they also have a three day deadline!

Don't worry, it seems that the estimated time to completition is incorrect (by factor of 10 on my side).

I have 8 % after 30 minutes, it's 16%/hour - it's between 6-7 hours on my PC C2D @ 2.2GHz

I have just started with TRP LLR.
58:33:33 H:M:S is what they tell me for my AMD Phenom 9650 [2.30 gig / 1/15 gig]

Yes I was surprised that the LLR project is now running. I ran 2 of the big SoB projects and got
a badge for it. I wonder how many points you need to get a badge for this LLR project?

Well I have one for PPS, SoB, and AP26. I want to get one here as well.

Has anyone heard how many points do you get per WUs?

"Strike while the iron is hot" seems to fit this occasion.

Yes, we are almost 70% to 1P. Our initial goal was 500T before starting LLR at the 3M range. Our preferred goal was 1P which we'll be at in a few days. Time was available today to implement so we decided to go ahead with LLR.

Got a couple units on my Q6600 now. Looking like around 6 hour run time. If I'm reading the input file correctly, these are n=3M+

We were estimating about 6 hours on a Q6600. As for credit, we'll wait WU's to come in so we can establish more accurate time estimates.

EDIT: mackerel beat me to the estimate. :)

suppressed pending completion is what is shown for the pending I have. Is this something new? Are these double checked too ? Took 4:45 on a Phenom II 955.

I am at 45% after running 4 hours and 35% at 2.5 hours for the two TRP LLR WUs that
are currently running. It took a while for the queue to get to start doing them.
I do not know what is a Phenom II 955 compared to a Phenom 9650 X4?
faster, slower, same speed?
Got the fastest AMD processor I could afford in Feb of this year.
Also have an AMD64 3200+ running PG, finished a 440+ hour SoB
where it took 230+ hours on this Phenom 9650. Now that slower
AMD64 is running AP26 and some other LLR work that is in its queue for the next
day or so.

I want to see how this TRP LLR runs and maybe let it run on the 2 AMD
systems and see if it runs under a few days on a P4 [2gig] server.

This is expected behavior. Single tests are running on some of these WU's and for integrity reasons, the result is suppressed until validated. It's the same feature that's being used on the Sophie Germain prime search.

Validation will begin as soon as we have enough results returned to get a better credit estimation.

We have about 10% residues from the previous effort...even less for n>3M. For WU's that have a residue, a single test will be sent out for double checking. Also, some first pass tests will be double checked as well.

OK have completed some TRP-LLR
Boinc Manager states that it will now take 3:44:45 [H:M:S] to do the work.
I am running 321-LLR and TRP-LLR as my only two PG projects on the 4 cores
of the desktop. I have not seen any credits for it yet. Wll have to wait till some one
else does them as well. Though, how many people/cores are running TRP-LLR
at this point is unknown, since it is it started earilier that expected.

I don't know a way to tell how many different people are running TRP LLR, but from this page:
http://www.primegrid.com/stats_trp_llr.php
you can see how many tasks are currently in progress (it was 700 when I wrote this post).

There are people reporting completion times, I've finished couple of TRP LLRs as well - still no single completed/validated according to http://www.primegrid.com/stats_trp_llr.php...?

Any ideas on how long it will be till you start posting credit results for TRP-LLR?

It seemed to read that the credit reporting will be suppressed for a while
till someone/group will decide how many credits will be given for how much
work is done for those credits.

I have done 61 of the TRP-Sieve projects and several [unknown for exact number till listed]
LLR's. Until you start posting credits, I need to do other PG work [321-LLR] along with it
so I can show that this computer's 4 cores is doing some work. I have, on average, two
cores running 321-LLR and two running TRP-LLR. While there is no credit reporting, I am
only seeing the 321 work. My daily PG credits have taken a nose dive with only two
of the four cores reporting credits on this machine. I am relying on the single core systems
of AMD64 3200+ and P4 2gig to give me some PG credits while I am waiting. 1/3 to 1/2
of my daily PG credits are no longer there while running TRP-LLR.

Also, is there any troubles running TRP LLR and Sieve together? I was told "never"
run 321 [either] while running AP26. The guy stated that every system he used
had either crashed or it caused the total run time for each to increase by 10-20%.
Since I heard that, I am just checking about running the TRP sieve on 1-2 cores
while the other run its LLR version. I know that TRP sieve does not take long at all
to get the credits out of the "pending list".

We chose 3M as the starting point in hopes of finding 1-2 primes before 4M. We will also be making occasional backtracks into the 2M-3M range to double check. Based on this graph, it is possible that 1 to 2 primes might have been passed over.

I'm guessing that the y-axis is mis-labeled and it's supposed to be "k values remaining." If that's the case, am I reading it right in concluding that we expect to still have 40 k values left when we reach a similar size test as SoB is working on with their enormously long work units?

And am I right in assuming that since the only difference in the form of the numbers is a +1 vs a -1, that the Riesel tests will take just as long up in an n=17,000,000 range?

Basically, yes to both questions. :)

One of the main reasons we chose to increase the sieve file to 50M is based on the expected 40 k's remaining at 20M.

mis-labeled is such a harsh statement.

n(umber of k) left doesn't read too well, even if it is right.
# left is too sharp, and can also be pounded on.

But, yes YVES GALLOT's paper does predict that at n 16777216 there will still be 41 k for which a prime will not yet have been found.

I don't know a way to tell how many different people are running TRP LLR, but from this page:

you can see how many tasks are currently in progress (it was 700 when I wrote this post).

How the granted credits are calculated? I have nearly the same runtime for the WUs on my i7-860, but the granted credits are very different.
for example:

llr_trp_146561_47450583: CPU time 28,797.08 granted 146.40

llr_trp_336839_47447572: CPU time 28,667.30 granted 145.23

llr_trp_325123_47443048: CPU time 28,653.77 granted 289.78

Well I have 7 tasks done for TRP LLR - with 1250 credits total.
I have done 71 sieve tasks and have 1003 "hits". I just wish I would
find primes sometimes. Found many factors, but no primes yet with any of the projects.

How the granted credits are calculated? I have nearly the same runtime for the WUs on my i7-860, but the granted credits are very different.
for example:

llr_trp_146561_47450583: CPU time 28,797.08 granted 146.40

llr_trp_336839_47447572: CPU time 28,667.30 granted 145.23

llr_trp_325123_47443048: CPU time 28,653.77 granted 289.78

same for me... if you look at this computer, and exclude the first two workunits in the list you see that the running time is almost the same for every wu. although credits range from 173.42 to 336.79... quite a difference.

Looks like granted credit is ~1.44*(average of claimed credits) for all TRP LLR WUs including those with a dummy result (like this one). Because the dummy result doesn't claim any credit, the amount of granted credits is much less than it is for a normal WU. Not an ideal solution IMHO. ;)

ISTR that the dummy PSP DC WUs had a fixed claim to offset this, or have I misremembered?
The dummy's should really have an 'average' claim to make the scoring fairer.
(Although we shouldn't really be basing credits on claim anyway, since it's a rubbish system in many ways - LLR WUs should be based on some number of digits plus FFT size formula that I'm too stupid to define)

Riesel Sieve's formula was 100*(7.5)^log(n/2^19) back in the days.

Was a pretty ok formula for constant credit per cputime.

Why is it that k=444637 is showing as green in the list? Has it already completed all it's remaining candidates up to n=50M (most likely not since that would make this k very low-weight)? Or did we happen to see how close RS were to get a prime, when they abandoned their effort?

Take care

They are loaded in small batches from a sieve table with all candidates to LLR tables.

You only see the number loaded to LLR tables and completed, pending +100-150 not yet out.

In sieve tables all number that have a factor (from sieve ) will be marked so they never will be loaded to LLR table.

LLR table will only have 100 numbers loaded.

Becuse off that you will only see competed, pending +100-150 numbers in that stats.

Looks like k=444637 is being pushed to higher n levels than the other k values.
Tests taking longer, and the server status page shows this too.
Is this because we have residues to compare against for this particular k?

Also, have we started (or even finished) any double-checking below n=3M yet?

Looks like k=444637 is being pushed to higher n levels than the other k values.

That is correct. k=444637 is one of the lowest weight of the k's (lowest tests remaining after sieve), so we pushed it to 5M.

Doublecheck hasn't been done below n=3M.

Are we going to do this for all k? or just a few? if so, which ones to what levels?

I just came to think, according to the graph at the mersenneforum, that is reffered to in the first posting, there should be around 16 primes in the n-range of 3.0M to 10.0M. Now I'm thinking, wouldn't it be worth doing a firstpass testing to n=10.0M and save doublechecking of 16 k's, even if 1 or 2 primes should be missed? I really think that going to n<=10M, could be feasibel in few years, if you decided to postpone a doublecheck. Also now you sure must have some sort of stats on the errorrate, wich can tell if it is a good way to approach or it really wouldn't work. So what do you all think, of this idea? Any pros or cons, let's just have them, but if the errorrate is rather small, I think that it in itself could justify a firstpass run up to a predetermined n-level or an n-level wich currently matches the removal rate of candidates in the sievefile. Also remember what removing 16 k's would mean in efficiency gain for the sievefile :)

I don't know what the overall error rates are - admins would need to find that out.

However, my empirical view purely from looking at my WUs is that there are sufficient errors (with the various hosts acting as my wingman) to justify the current double-checking approach. There are a lot of 'uncontrolled' machines running here that aren't up to long running LLR tasks, compared to the more manual projects where more care and attention tends to be applied. I don't really want to test up to 10M on a k where a prime was missed at 4M.

This might be a really dumb question, but I'll take the chance asking it anyways... ;-)

As a couple of the k's are very small compared to the biggest ones, wouldn't it be smart to run them to a higher n than the others in hope of finding a prime? Smaller k's means shorter runtimes per candidate and if a prime is found, it will speed up sieving which helps all the other candidates.

The impact of k is negligible. The main duration increase comes from rising n levels.

Would it be possible to display the number that has been tested for primality for TRP-LLR tasks (and also for SOB-LLR) on their workunit pages as it is done for all other LLR-projects? It would satisfy my curiosity.
Also, would it be possible to display n for found primes in the last column on the stats pages for the LLR-projects that search for only one prime per k (TRP, PSP, SOB)? Since these primes are only found very rarely (so far three PSP's if I count correctly) they could possibly even be added manually to the tables without too much effort. This way it would immediately be clear why a row is green (currently no task in progress or indeed a finished k).
Thanks!

The found primes in those tables is only those primes found by PrimeGrid - not those found by others outside PG working in concert on the same problem - so, sadly, the lack of primes shown for PSP/SOB/TRP is accurate for now - crunch more to change this!

Is there a reason why the prime candidates that have been tested are not longer displayed at the results? Until a week ago or so there was always a line like "123456*2^123456-1 is not prime." (same happened to SR5 and probably also others). I would love to see them again to satisfy my curiosity...

Prime candidates ARE displayed -- and in fact they're now displayed for all candidates. They used to only be displayed for candidates tested with LLR.

See, for example: http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=457352567

It's composite candidates that are no longer displayed, and that's intentional.

Couple comments:
1- You don't have any TRP tasks on your hosts. At best, you have TRP Sieve, which is very, VERY different.
2- Could you word your phrase a bit better? No matter how many times I read it, I just can't understand what you are trying to say...
3- It seems like you have a high WU buffer. And that's usually a bad way to go, save for a few specific cases. I suggest you set your boinc preference to store 0~0.5 days of work at max. It'll increase the chances of getting a prime for yourself, and it also helps validating other people's tasks quicker.

You have finished those TRP Sieve tasks. Every workunit is given out to two hosts. We're waiting for the other host (what we call your wingman) for each workunit to complete the task and verify that you got the correct result. Most subprojects at PrimeGrid operate with a quorum of 2 - that is two different computers must agree on a result. There's nothing you need to do, those other hosts will either finish or the server will expire them and send them to new hosts.
