The St. Patrick's Day Parade!!!

After being dormant for almost 2 years, the Riesel Problem could benefit from a little bit of good luck. The previous effort on this problem ended so abruptly that it left a lot of people sour. We'd like to change that and breathe life back into attacking the problem.

Therefore, on 17 March (St. Patrick's Day) we humbly request for help in rubbing some "Irish Luck" on this effort.

Since the Ides of March Challenge is on the PSP/SoB (Sieve), there will be no need for a "clean-up". Instead, please consider hanging around a couple of extra days on the the Riesel Problem (Sieve) to participate in this St. Patrick's Day parade. The Challenge ends 16 March 18:00 UTC which gives everyone 6 hours to switch over to The Riesel Problem (Sieve). The parade will begin 17 March 00:00 UTC and end 18 March 00:00 UTC.

If in the past you have worked on the Riesel Problem, here's a chance to renew your interest and once again contribute for a day or so. The sieving effort, although only 3 days old, is going exceptionally well. With the boost from this parade, we hope to start primality testing immediately afterwards.

For individuals who have completed previous work on the Riesel problem, we'll gladly accept the following:

Factor files: While this will have minimal impact on the current sieving effort, it will immediately help out with primality testing by reducing the number of candidates to test. All factors will be verified before being accepted.

Residue files: This will directly impact the double check effort by allowing PrimeGrid to send out only one test to match residues. Of course, if residues do not match, another test will be sent out and we're no worse off than if we didn't have the residue in the first place.

Please submit to sieve at primegrid dot com.

Thank you in advance for this consideration. PSA credit may be granted in exchange. ;)

p.s. The single day credit record for PrimeGrid is 15.9M cobblestones. It is definitely within reach for an effort like this. ;)

in my honest opinion it should be a invitation to crunch a new subproject to learn more about it (and to push it to a llring state) ...

No race, no challenge, just a fun to push PrimeGrids single-day-record to a higher level ...

Ok, thanks for the info!
But how about adding a small RS Challenge to the official series?
I see in May we don't have any challenge at all so there would be a time window open for a nice 1-3 days challenge or so... ;-)

i don't think another challenge in the series would be a good idea.
also the may should be used for clean up of the aprils challenge - 321 llr, not the smallest in my opinion...

I just thought it would be nice to add RS because we are having already 26 days reserved for LLR challenges this year (compared to only 11 days for Sieve challenges).

I know the LLR WUs are mostly quite long so the challenges have to be longer but I still feel that Sieve's are under-represented.

I know the LLR WUs are mostly quite long so the challenges have to be longer but I still feel that Sieve's are under-represented.

The yearly Challenge Series is set at 9 Challenges. This will not change this year.

However, that doesn't prevent "informal gatherings" such as the "St. Patrick's Day Parade" or the well established "GCW13 Mini Challenges". As for May, yes, it's mainly vacant because of the previous Challenge on 321 LLR. It also provides a nice breather in the series. There's another one after the October Challenge, although not quite as long.

While the clean-up for the Challenge will be going on in May, we have in the planning stages an "informal gathering". It looks like the Riesel problem could fit nicely with it. We'll wait and see. :)

The Riesel problem was very popular back in its prime. :) We hope to rekindle some of that spirit and make quick progress in the coming months. Please spread the word that the attack on the Riesel problem is once again alive and well.

The primegrid family has always opened their arms and CPU's to new projects, many times with spectactular results. I am excited to see what we can accomplish. :)

While it's not a Challenge project, it will probably still get slammed with people switching from the Ides of March challenge, although with a 6 hour window to switch, hopefully it will be spread out a bit.

The sieve file is 42MB, so it's still probably a good idea to run a few tests to get the sieve file before the server gets hit with the challenge followed by everyone switching to the parade...

The St. Patrick's Day Parade!!!

It's not too late to help spread the word about the resurrection of the Riesel problem. On 17 March (St. Patrick's Day) we humbly request for help in rubbing some "Irish Luck" on this effort.

If in the past you have worked on the Riesel Problem, here's a chance to renew your interest and once again contribute for a day or so. The sieving effort is still going exceptionally well. With the boost from this parade, we hope to start primality testing immediately afterwards.

Thank you for all your help! :)

Yes, he's Swedish, but he needs a lot of "Irish Luck" to solve his problem. :D

Perhaps we could slip in another run on 23 July before the PPSE LLR Full Moon challenge, on the feast of St Briget of Sweden.

That's a slow machine! The current Ides work (PSP Sieve) is taking under 2 hours on my slowest machine, a PM 1.5GHz laptop. On my fast 64-bit Core 2, Riesel sieve WUs take over 9 times as long as PSP Sieve WUs. You might get one done in a day...

Riesel LLR or Riesel Sieve? No clue on how long the LLR will take (there isn't one right now), but if you were asking about the Riesel sieve, it takes about 10 times as long to process as the PSP sieves in the Ides challenge.

Thanks for the answers. Yes I meant Sieve not LLR.

The computer is a stoneage Toshiba laptop and a little on the slow side, the rest of my stable are in storage until my return to the mainland.

A day a WU is too long, I will have to sit this one out.

Actually, you can switch at about 17:45 UTC since almost all hosts are not able to complete a PSP/SoB (Sieve) WU in less than 15 minutes. :)

Just switched over now as even my fastest system takes around half an hour a unit... so not all of them will make it in time.

Any further input on the computation length of those WUs?

Almost 3 hours for 50% done on a T7200 for the only pair i already have running.

They are the longest of the sieve tasks. On a 2.4 GHz Core2 Q6600 (running 64 bits), it takes about 5 hours. YMMV depending on your processor, of course, but also you can expect it to take longer (maybe 50%) if you're running in 32 bit mode.

4hr6min13sec on a 2.5GHz Intel, because of the FSB of 1,333.
The speed of FSB is more important than the clock speed with sieving.

I am running them at a shade over 3 hours on a Q9450, but it is OCed to 3.36....not bad for credits....

Can anyone estimate how long a Reisel LLR will take me please? The current Ides work is taking about 2h50m on the only computer I have with me

P.S. greetings all from a desert island in the coral sea, and still primed!!

Dave on Willis Island.

The current TRP is a sieve task. I think they said that the LLR part will
be in testing phase soon.

The TRP-sieve runs on a Phenom 9650[2.3 gig] at 5-6 hours for the short WUs
and 11-12 hours for the longer WUs I have seen before the Ides Challenge.
This machine does the PSP sieve in about 34 minutes, so you can compare
from those figures. My P4 [2 gig] runs the PSP sieve in 2 hours 19 min.
So my your figures, you must have something like a 2 gig P4 running.
Mine is an old 2002 IBM server and its only function in life now is crunching
and soon some manually backup audio and video files. Crunching and storage.
Just like it did when it was a new SuSe system.

Tim in Elmira, New York, USA, Earth, Sol system, Milkyway, Universe, 1st of the 11 dimensions.
I think that covers where I am. Sometimes I like to list the fullest address I can,
except the the floor # [10], tower name [C], apartment number [5], street name,
etc. etc. . . . . . .

Where is Willis Island. The only other Elmira is on an Island in Canada.

The Parade has reached its end!

The "Luck of the Irish" has definitely been delivered. A very successful parade indeed. In the last 24 hours, over 107T was completed. This brings the overall total close to 500T. With a sieve that's only 10 days old in BOINC, 500T is a HUGE milestone.

Thank you to everyone who answered the call for help. This has given The Riesel Problem (Sieve) a tremendous boost. Imagine if we were to string 5 of these days together!?!?! That would bring the sieve to 1P in 5 days! Unheard of for a file this size (64 k's for n<50M)!!!

We'll review the density of the file and determine a good n level to start primality testing (LLRing). Most likely it will be a combination of first pass (n>3M) and second pass (n>2M) work. Thanks again for helping us reach this milestone.
