Welcome to the New Moon Challenge

PrimeGrid's Challenge series continues with the New Moon Challenge. Please come join us in ushering in the New Moon for July. A 24 hour Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's AP26 Search (Arithmetic Progression of 26 primes) application.

The New Moon in July is fitting for a new project to the Challenge Series. Along with the New Moon, a total Solar Eclipse is also occurring, dubbed the "most significant" this century. While an AP26 is extremely rare, let's hope it's not as rare as this Solar Eclipse. ;) Statistically, we are currently about 1/2 way through the search field where we "might" find an AP26. Beyond that, we could say that we may be "unlucky". :)

This Challenge is also significant because it will be the first time Mac's will be able to participate. [EDIT] PS3 and Solaris are now included for the first time as well. :)

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the AP26 Search project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 21 July 2009 18:00 UTC and end 22 July 2009 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for the following:

  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
  • Microsoft Windows running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU
  • Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
  • Linux running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU
  • Mac OS 10.3 or later running on Motorola PowerPC
  • Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel
  • Mac OS 10.5+ running on an Intel 64-bit CPU
  • Solaris 2.8+ on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU
  • Cell/BE Linux (Playstation 3) - (currently being developed and tested) follow progress here. EDIT: IN PRODUCTION!!! See this thread for details on how to implement it.

This section under review. Clarification will hopefully be coming soon.
NOTE: Current AP26 clients for x86 all require SSE2 support. Therefore the following CPU's might not be supported:

    - AMD's K7 familiy and below (Athlon XP/MP/Duron/Geode/Sempron)
    - Intel Pentium III/Celeron-P6 and below
    - VIA C3 and below
    - any Cyrix

WU times

Fastest: 11-12 minutes
Average: 20 minutes
Slower: 30-40 minutes
Slowest: 150+ minutes

For a list of "notable" AP's found by PrimeGrid, see the AP26 Stats page. For an extensive list of record AP's, please see Jens Kruse Andersen's Primes in Arithmetic Progression Records page.

Time zone converter:

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 21 July 2009 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 22 July 2009 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. Since this is a fixed credit project, we'll be using cobblestones for scoring.

About the AP26 Search (Arithmetic Progression of 26 primes)

An arithmetic progression is a sequence of numbers with a common difference between any two successive numbers in the sequence. For instance, the sequence 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, ... is an arithmetic progression with a common difference of 2.

Therefore, an arithmetic progression of primes is a sequence of primes with a common difference between any two successive numbers in the sequence. For example 3, 7, 11 is an arithmetic progression of 3 primes with a common difference of 4.

For an arithmetic progression (AP) of primes, AP-k is k primes of the form p + d*n for some d (the common difference between the primes) and k consecutive values of n. The above AP-3 is 3 + 4*n for n=0,1,2.

n=0; 3 + 4*0 = 3 + 0 = 3
n=1; 3 + 4*1 = 3 + 4 = 7
n=2; 3 + 4*2 = 3 + 8 = 11

Another example is the AP-10 of the form 199 + 210*n for n=0..9. This produces the following sequence: 199, 409, 619, 829, 1039, 1249, 1459, 1669, 1879, 2089.

AP-k is also sometimes notated PAP-k (Primes in Arithmetic Progression).

We are searching for the longest AP, not the largest. The current record is an AP25 discovered 17 May 2008 by Raanan Chermoni & Jaroslaw Wroblewski. PrimeGrid tied the record by finding an AP25 on 8 Apr 2009 (BOINC@Poland, PrimeGrid, AP26). For a complete list of records including longest and largest AP's, please see Jens Kruse Andersen's Primes in Arithmetic Progression Records. Also, a list of the top 20 largest AP's can be found at The Prime Pages: The Top 20

Jaroslaw Wroblewski's AP26 code will be used for the search. Geoff Reynolds adapted the program for use with BOINC and for compiling without GMP. Several others have contributed to improving the code and porting it to other platforms.

Additional information can be found here:

Credit is currently set at 13.61 cobblestones per WU..

About the New Moon/Solar Eclipse

The New Moon and total Solar Eclipse will occur at 02:35 UTC on 22 July. The solar eclipse is being called the most significant this century because it is the longest total solar eclipse that will occur until 13 June 2132. Totality will last for up to 6 minutes and 39 seconds, with the maximum eclipse occurring in the ocean at 02:35:21 UTC about 100 km south of the Bonin Islands, southeast of Japan. The North Iwo Jima island is the landmass with totality time closest to maximum.

"The Eclipse will be visible from a narrow corridor through northern India, eastern Nepal, northern Bangladesh, Bhutan, the northern tip of Myanmar, central China and the Pacific Ocean, including the Ryukyu Islands, Marshall Islands and Kiribati. Totality will be visible in many cities such as Surat, Varanasi, Patna, Thimphu, Chengdu, Chongqing, Wuhan, Hangzhou and Shanghai, as well as over the Three Gorges Dam." (Wikipedia)

32 bit OS with 64 bit CPU
This is for those who are "driving with the hand brake active" (running a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit machine) ;) Wubi is a very nice tool that installs Ubuntu as a dual boot to your 64 bit machine. It's as simple as adding a program to Windows. You can even uninstall it like you would any other program. :)

Wubi - Ubuntu Installer

After getting 64 bit OS running on your machine, here's a link to ALL BOINC clients (including Linux x64): http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php If you are new to Linux and need help getting set up, let us know.

It really is simple. :)

Ubuntu has a power save feature that throttles the CPU frequency down to save power. It does not treat BOINC as an active program so will throttle down thus causing under-performance. For those downloading the latest Ubuntu 9.04, please follow these directions to make sure the frequency is not throttled down while BOINC is running:

1. In Ubuntu, right click the top menu bar
2. Select add to panel
3. Select "CPU Frequency Scaling Monitor"
4. Click add

This will add a processor icon to the top menu. Click on the icon and set to "Performance". This also allows you to see the CPU frequency.

When did this happen? I've been happily running AP26 on P3 boxes for some time. This is a retrograde step.

I have a boinc-client for x86_64-pc-solaris here.
It needs following shared libraries:

  • libcrypto.so.0.9.7
  • libgcc_s.so.1
  • libssl.so.0.9.7
  • libstdc++.so.6

I have them installed via package-manager in /lib/64 for crypto/ssl and /usr/sfw/lib/amd64 for gcc/stdc++ respectively.[/quote]

Could anyone who is interested in running it under Solaris give this version a try?
Here another user had difficulties in running this boinc-client whereas i had none.

Vato, all of your P-III systems show 0 tasks completed.

P-III has no SSE2 and thus the AP26 binary will crash when calling the CVTSI2SD instruction.

They always used to complete and get credit - this must be a change in the client.
Can you put this back?

32bit-App without SSE2 was too slow compared to the 64bit-App, if I remember right. That's why support for older CPUs was dropped (not a big deal since 99% of the project's work is done by more modern machines ;)). But I wonder if it is possible to provide a non-SSE2 version via the anonymous platform (like SIMAP does for non-SSE hosts). That way the modern hosts would not be penalized, but antique machines can participate again. ;)

Since the source is out he could build his own app and run it via app_info.xml if he wants to.
Speaking of: I got the reminder to send the bundled source to someone.

I don't remember there being any discussion about dropping platforms - only about speedups for some platforms. Speedups are obviously good, but SSE2-only is a weak form of optimisation. Rather than breaking folks that were working just fine, this should be done via the wrapper choosing which executable to run. Doing this just before a challenge is not nice.

[EDIT: This may be inaccurate given the modification to the top post]

If i remember right this was not done "just before the challenge" but rather a long time ago - speaking in computer term. ;)

FYI... PIII's are returning valid work. That's why the first post was modified after the concern was raised. The SSE2 section is under review. I'm awaiting clarification from Rytis and Geoff.

Note the following builds:

Windows 32 bit - 14 Mar 2009
Windows 64 bit - 18 Jan 2009
Linux 32 bit - 14 Mar 2009
Linux 64 bit - 27 Dec 2008

EDIT: Jarek notes, "original code with patches for 32-bit speed up should work on any CPU capable of running simple C codes." Therefore, it's up to what was compiled and what was put into production...answers that Geoff and Rytis will be able to provide.

EDIT 2: From Geoff, the -i686- executable does not need SSE2. The 02-March executable runs OK on a Pentium 2.

Since the Win exe was compiled by a different person, I'll check with Rytis to clarify that build.

SSE2 Update

I'm still awaiting clarification on the Windows build. NOTE: All PIII's returning valid work that I have observed are running Linux.

Last minute updates

Although not confirmed, it appears that only Win 32 bit is limited by the SSE2 requirement. Therefore, Linux should be used on "older" non-SSE2 machines.

Booster account clarification:

The definition of a "booster" account is members of a team attaching under a single user name to pool their resources.

This is acceptable as long as they announce their presence and intentions. The "booster" account will NOT qualify for individual rankings...however, their Challenge points DO count towards the team totals.

Should a "booster" account not identify themselves, then their Challenge points will be removed from the team totals.

We are experience an extremely high throughput. The validator simply is not able to keep up. Also, 450K WU's does not appear to be enough for the Challenge so we'll have to insert more.

We are making adjustments to see if we can free up some power for the validator and also to allow time to insert more work.

Therefore, you may notice a few "blips" here and there.

This is all EXCELLENT news as it means y'all are doing a GREAT job. Best of Luck in finding that AP26...and for those who can view it, take some pictures of the Solar Eclipse for the rest of us. :)

Argl!
We should have started the challenge yesterday (20th July) on 2017 UTC and have it run until 22th July 0235 UTC under the name "The Moon Challenge".
I think we have missed an opportunity here. :(

Very bad luck for me this time... my quad and three notebooks went down due to a power outage at 21:45 UTC and I won't be able to bring them back up before 16:30 UTC. :(

Your notebooks turned off on power failure? That was a really long break, when the batteries didn't cover it.

Due to the rain last night, its not that hot here (still 29°C room temp).

Your notebooks turned off on power failure? That was a really long break, when the batteries didn't cover it.

My guess was wrong, not the computers were down, but the router died. So all hosts were up and crunching and I was able to report the finished WUs at 18:05 UTC after buying a new router... definitely the worst challenge for me so far. :(

At least only the router died, everything else is okay. ;)

Regarding the fact i missed the start by 15 Minutes and the ending by 10 i am very satisfied with my personal outcome too. But my acknoldgements are to my team as well as all participants in this short sprint challenge. See you next time in less than a month with woodallLLR, let us see what hardware i could recruit until then to assist my pursuit for at least a point in the individual stats.
See you!

EDIT: Hey our team crunched 5113 WUs, that is a prime number!
EDIT2: Hey cool, is this new or haven't i seen this before due to not meeting the "requirements"?

The results are Final!

July's New Moon has come and gone. During the 24 hour Challenge, over 265,000 WU's were completed, more than 13 times the average daily processing for the AP26 project!!! This resulted in over 3.6M cobblestones being awarded. Congratulations to everyone...this is another great accomplishment.

120 teams and 688 individuals participated in the Challenge.

It appears that SETI.Germany became the Moon for this Challenge and conducted its own "solar eclipse" over the rest of the teams. :) However, it's just as incredible to see other teams surge during the Challenges doubling, tripling, and even quadrupling their own daily output. A job well done to all.

Congratulations to SETI.Germany as the top team and SG marodeur6 as the top individual. Remember, the top 30 places earn points for this Challenge.

The Overall Challenge Rankings will be updated within 24 hours.

While the goal of the Challenges is to have a little "spirited" competition, it would be nice to find something significant as well. Unfortunately, the AP26 was not discovered. I guess that means one is just around the corner??? :) However, the following were found:

AP19's: 1264
AP20's: 329
AP21's: 90
AP22's: 25
AP23's: 6

The next Challenge is the Dog Days of Summer, a 5 day Challenge from 18-23 August on the Woodall Prime Search (LLR). We hope to see you there! Thank you again to everyone. We appreciate your participation and hope you had fun!

AP26 tasks

But what the others show are like primes say 13 and you can click on the actual number 13 or whatever then it can show you all the 20.21.22.23.24.25.26 etc etc or whatever you have time to do I would love to help anyway I could if the community would support Tim's idea, I know I will!!!

John was kind enough to ping over the details of what I'd found. Not quite sure what I'm going to do with the info but nice to have.

As John M says it would be quite neat to be able to click a link to find the info out but I'm not sure if it is possible to do that or if there are other more pressing needs for time. I am well aware that this is a volunteer effort.

Alas I've no skills to help implement the idea even if it is viable.

Cheers!

For AP23 and above, you can look for your user id here. I would assume that it is not more difficult to list below ap23, though probably very tedious work.

Hi John M. I know I can click on the number of PPS primes I've found and get a list of them. I was suggesting that if it was not too hard that we could do the same with the AP primes less than AP23 where there seems to be no easy way of seeing them.

Cheers! (or as my younger daughter would say Oink!)

Tim, are you sure that's your daughter? Maybe you should take a closer look and realize she's sleeping over at a friend's, after leaving a "replacement" behind...

Hi Peter

The poor little thing is for a change not interested to sleep over at a friend's; she has suspected swine flu. (But is now getting better).

Cheers!
