Hi guys!

Just a question for the devs out there that work on this project (if any of them even read the general sections!). Are there any plans to use some sort of GPU processing to help with the crunching for PrimeGrid?

It seems that with more and more people using more powerful graphics cards it is a valuable resource that could be exploited, especially not that BOINC can interface with CUDA enabled cards.

If they can use GPUs for accelerated Wi-Fi password breaking, there must be a use in crunching for it right?

All input welcome.

Hi Ryan

As it turns out, there is a thread on that very subject: GPUs/Number Crunching Forum

The general consensus seems to be that GPU’s would not be very useful for llr apps but would be ideal for sieving.

Our imperious leader, Rytis, is studying GPU programming, so eventually. . .

And by the way, welcome to PrimeGrid! :D

Ah I see. I must have missed that thread, did do a search - oops.

It would be nice to see GPUs in use, I've got 2 graphics cards that, at the moment anyway, are just sitting there doing nothing :)

Thanks for the reply and the welcome.

BOINC doesn’t yet allow the GPU and the CPU to crunch the same applications at the same time. So, until PG is GPU ready, you could snoop around and find a project that supports your card while your cpu crunches PG.

There is an effort to utilize the GPU but it appears to not be as easy as we had hoped.

kenzieB is correct that "GPU’s would not be very useful for llr apps but would be ideal for sieving." Unfortunately, our effort so far has not been fruitful. What we need most is GPU programming help...either ATI or Nvidia.

If anyone is interested in helping out, you can review the "limited" discussion here:

Folding@home, a non Boinc project, lets you use gpu's, as for Boinc projects Seti can use gpu's and Milky Way can use gpu's. That is all I remember right now, more are coming but with the standard just recently being agreed on, CUDA for example works on Nvidia ONLY, it may be a bit before all the projects are on board. OpenCL is the new standard and is still in the early stages, there will probably be newer versions coming along. Boinc itself is another problem with gpu crunching, Boinc seems to do a pretty bad job of sharing itself between the cpu and gpu. Sometimes Boinc uses 90% of a cpu just to feed a gpu! That is not efficient and means alot of us that crunch with gpu's dedicate one core just to it. Paul D Buck has done alot of testing in this area and so far has found that Boinc version 5.5.0 is the best yet. I personally do folding@home with my 2 gpu's and dedicate one core, in each machine, just to keeping it running. One machine is a quad core and one is a Celeron single core, both gpu's are very happily crunching along.

One more thing with gpu's...the more "stream processors" a given card has, the faster it can crunch. More stream processors means more money to spend on the card, you can easily spend spend several hundred dollars just on a good video card! Oh and if you don't have AT LEAST 256 meg of memory on the video card, it won't work either! We are not talking run of the mill good enough video cards here, we are talking high end gaming type cards. Hopefully that mean gamers can be turned into crunchers, when they take a break from gaming.

BOINC 6.6.20 (which I think has just been released) is supposed to address some of these problems.

Users should also remember that this is all very new stuff, even for the propellor heads at BOINC and the projects. They are on a far steeper learning curve in figuring out the basics of it, than we users are in trying to make their efforts work.

We did (and continue to do) research on GPU computing, however, it seems that due to the nature of PrimeGrid applications they are not well suited for GPU computing. We at least need double precision floating point support, but it's still not very popular (only new generation cards have that - and I recently upgraded my video card, and it turns out that my ATI Radeon HD4670 doesn't support that. Money well spent, duh!).

So, unless we release some kind of a new prime search application, or get help from experienced CUDA/Brook+ developer, I wouldn't count on PG being crunched on GPUs soon :(

The basic question is:

Let p be a 64-bit integer (63-bit or 62-bit if that helps). Can you perform primality testing of p on GPU?

Pseodoprimality check of 2^p=2(mod p) would be fine.

In this directory I have started collecting some thoughts how an algorithm of primality testing on GPU (which AFAI understand comes down to using 32-bit operations only) could work.

Things are changing rapidly, as usual... I just got an ATI HD4850 for ~100Euro, it has double precision, 800 shaders at 1080GFlops.... I'm running MilkyWay and Collatz (and primegrid on the CPU cores) with Boinc 6.10.3.

Both ATI/Brook applications were written by a guy named gipsel (you may find him on the MilkyWay forums).

Personally I don't think I will invest on GPU programming right now, but I hope for OpenCL to become really supported in order to start with it...

GPUs are getting cheaper, yes.

Milkyway's search algorithm has to be the easiest to run on a GPU, compared to other BOINC projects. Basically, all that was done to make a GPU app was split up calculating an integral into many small pieces and send it to the GPU.

In my opinion, I've yet to see a Primegrid app that would run well on the GPU.

I thought that the recent success with the AP26 app being split across cell processors might bode well for possible GPU app development for that sub-project. Is there something that makes this a particularly difficult leap?

If you have a fairly fast GPU (only nVidia, no ATI), you can also check out GPUGRID. They offer a 20% BOINC credit bonus if you can complete the WUs in under 48 hours. I'm currently using my GF9800GT (with 0.11 CPU allocated), which nets me ~5k credits every 14-16 hours.
