Our Server, who is mostly working,
Hallowed be thy CPU’s.
Prime Numbers shall come!!
Please validate, our WU’s as soon as possible.
And Please Give us this day our daily RAC.
And Please forgive us for our ignorant inquiries,
As we forgive Newby’s for their silly questions.
And lead us not into other Projects
But deliver us from Seti.
For you have the prime numbers,
and the credits and the glory,
for ever and ever (add infinitum).
Amen.

*lol*

"Deliver us from Seti" - it's my starting point as it is with lots of people, but by now it's the project with the least credits in my list. Overtaken even by Pirates@home *rofl*

Yeah-- Know what you mean-- I was with Seti from 1999 under a different user name-- was OK back then -- plenty of feedback (interesting triplets etc)-- felt like you were doing somthing useful--

Gave up on Seti back in late 2001 when I did a rebuild and had one of the very first copies of XP-- Seti wouldn't work with it--

Came back and had a look in Oct 2008-- no stats-- no nuthing!!-- gave up and switched to PG-- at least at PG you get some results--

I did worry that some devout souls may take offence at my post---

The post was made in humour with no offence or disrespect intended

First somputer I ever ran on DC was a Pentium 90 on SETI. This was March 14th, 2001. I upgraded that computer to 120 MHz after 2 months (free computer was what I had at the time) and saw my time drop! (wow) I actually learned how to build computer because of SETI. About 4 months later, my aunt gave me parts for an AMD K6-2 300MHz machine she couldn't figure out. About 2 days later, I had a running K6-2 300. I learned overclocking only 1 month after that, when I got it to run at 320 MHz, but the RAM was limiting me. A couple months later I upgraded it to a K6-2 350, and overclocked it to 370 or something close. Ran that computer for almost a year.

Bought my first computer off of ebay. Motherboard I ordered was an Abit KT7E Socket A http://techreport.com/articles.x/2670/1 which sported the never before seen blue PCB. At the time, everything was either yellow or green. I ran a Duron 1000 for about a month before I broke the chip (re-seating the cooler). Upgraded to the Duron 1300. unfortunately the Duron 1300 was a locked multiplier, so I learned how to overclock a 100 mHz board and RAM to a whopping 147 MHz (my best). All is history after that. From a 2.3 GHz Athlon XP 2100+ to the 2.8 Ghz Athlon64 3000+ and my current 2.6 GHz C2D 6400 (it goes faster, but I don't feel like it right now), I learned much about computer hardware. I probably ran 10 motherboards, 20 CPU's and many other RAM. This C2D was the first Intel product I ever purchased, the rest were freebies.

Ah the good ol' days. SETI got me into BOINC, BOINC got me into Prime Grid, Prime Grid got me into primes. I have found my home.

I always forget the original name of Prime Grid (back with the RSA challenge). I AM User 765...

Unfortunately, the SETI classic information is Tango Uniform, and I can't view my profile any longer.

I am here though, username Skligmund: http://seticlassic.ssl.berkeley.edu/classpages/days/2451983.html

I was involved in the electronics industry after I left School in the mid 1970's-- Playing with the first IC's mass produced (LM741; & 3900's) -- I think around 15 transistors per chip-- You could get them to do all sorts of weird stuff-- We even built a version of the old TV screen Ping-Pong-- It was programming at the most basic level -- you hard wired what you wanted it to do--

I couldn't see much future in all this (GREAT CALL) and went into Civil Engineering--

Never had anything to do with computers until I upgraded my CivEng degree in the mid 90's--- The Uni required -- One -I had a computer & Two-- I had to learn Q Basic & Visual Basic programming-- They required you write programs to solve complex engineering problems-- Very steep learning curve for me-- (seems my slide rule didn't cut it anymore)--

I actually got pretty good at Q Basic and still use some of the old programs I wrote for solving survey trig problems ( If you can convince XP to run them)

First computer I bought (2nd Hand) 386 (33Mhz) with 8 Meg RAM-- Running Win 3.11-- (My gawd the horsepower)

Been building my own systems ever since-- I then slave the hard drive from the old system so no data is lost-- (some 15 hard drives now)-- Surprisingly the original old 386 hard drive still works -- a Conner Periferal 202Meg-- (I plug it in somtimes for old times sake)

Got into Seti in 1999 with an AMD build 550Mhz I think (state of the art)--
I enjoyed Seti back then--

Recently I was appointed as Director of Engineering Services for a newly formed local government authority fromed from the amalgamation of 5 smaller councils-- I have since found a treasure trove of computers-- seems when a PC didn't work as it should it was either thrown out or placed in the archive store rooms-- So far I have found everything from Duo C's to Celerons-- 50 PC's so far-- I think if I dug to the back of the archives I would find a skeleton holding an abacus--

I usually take them home plug them in and see what happens--- Duo Core turned out to be less than a year old but full of viruses-- All these old PC's usually have Win passwords but there is a way around this-- If you have legally come into posession of an old PC that won't let you in then PM me for details--

When I get the time I add another PC to my farm of derelicts (Celeron Power)--

I crunch 100% for PG-- all boxes on PPS & TSP--

Good crunching guys--

PS-- I have never O-Clocked yet but I understand the principles-- (Might see what a celeron can do) Ha!! :)

I too started with Seti, back in Dec 1999 I think. A friend of my sons got me interested,
I only had one computer back then and the whole family used it. Well as you can guess
the wife and kids got it so full of junk and so sloooow that I went out and bought them their
computer. Of course it crunched too. Then after a couple of months it got sloooow too and
the wife had me buy her her own pc too. I redid the original machine into the kids machine
and they both used it until I got another one, they we all had our own pc's, all crunching for Seti
of course! I got into computers at work, not for work, just with friends at work, and started fixing
their computers for them. I finally upgraded my first pc, an IBM XT running at 4.7mhz with a TURBO switch to bring it up to 10mhz!!!! I added a 2nd hard drive, more memory, a 2nd floppy drive, lots of new stuff! Computer shopper, the magazine, was free back then and when I had problems I would pick up the phone and call one of the vendors and ask for help. Most helped some didn't. I slowly expanded my bunch of computers to 4 and then some friends called me and I suddenly had about 5 more! I had to help them migrate their old stuff over to their new pc and I got the old hardware in payment. I still do things that way! Well eventually I got up to over 20 pc's and I found out you need a Server if you have more than 22 pc's in a Workgroup and you want them to talk to each other!! My son brought home this HUGE server from school, it was a quad cpu 450mhz floor model thing, it was HUGE!!! It solved lots of problems, and of course crunched, but was sooo sloooow. I then heard about Windows Home Server, I tried the Beta, liked it, and bought my own software and built my own server! It still runs to this day, it is a 3.0ghz dual core with 1.3TB of storage space. I would not recommend the software to anyone else though, that is another issue!!! Anyway along the way Seti switched from their Classic crunching to Boinc. I of course jumped on the bandwagon and whole-heartedly crunched EXCLUSIVELY for Seti, even became a Forum Mod, until I found out they don't check any of the returned units! The people crunching for Seti, just crunch, the project does not utilize the data!!! Well that was a shock, I mean how can they find ET if they don't even look? Sure they record the noise, send it out to hundreds of thousands of people to crunch, and then put it on the shelf for later analysis!! Several of us Forum Mods had some trouble with some of the other Mods and asked the Admins to step in and solve the problems. The Admins said 'we don't have time, you solve it amongst yourselves'. Well after some horrendous fights, some in public, some people actually got moderated, unmoderated and then moderated again within 10 minutes of a posting! Some of us, about half a dozen, left Seti and went to another project. We all still crunch for that project, although since it is down right now we have all branched out, which is how I got here!! Seti was, in my mind, the 'place to be' when I started, the hope of finding something important, something no one had ever seen before, was enticing and frankly still is to me. BUT the reality of the project is that its very size has doomed it to doing nothing now but collecting the data and storing it for another time! During the Seti Classic days, we found out later, they would actually reissue the same units thousands of times, just to keep the people crunching happy! There are rumors, unproven and denied by the project, that they still do that to this day! I have continued my crunching that I started for Seti, but I will not go back until some people leave and there are some MAJ0R changes over there!! I am just as happy finding all these new projects to give my RAC too. When I surpass Seti in my stats, soon hopefully, a HUGE smile will appear on my face and be there for a long time! I put a lot of time into Seti, I still believe in the concept, the people in charge though is another story! Viva la choice!!!

Wow you have too much time on your hands to type all that LOL! But it was funny :)
