Why aren't 321 and PPS available through BOINC normally? If you really want people to help with PPS and 321, I think the best thing to do is make them available through BOINC without having to request anything. If you're worried about DB load, simply make them last multiple hours.

Anyway, when the Final push for OGR @ Yoyo is over, I'll start sieving for PSP.

A good suggestion...and one that we certainly may be able to offer in the future. However, what we really want is for people to crunch whatever they like. These priority suggestions are simply there for people who are interested.

PPS sieve is already ~4 hours per WU on faster/newer machines. However, as noted in the PPS Sieve thread, the sieve file is very large. Registration allows us to monitor the distribution of this file. As it is very large, we want to minimize the impact on bandwidth.

321 sieve may become BOINC one day, but for now, this is our current situation. Additionally, some PG users with the means and determination may want to explore a "different" more traditional side to prime searching...a manual one that's "more under the hood" than just selecting a check box. We offer PG LLRNet for this same reason, so users can explore the semi automated method to prime finding.

One thing we don't offer yet is manual LLR reservations (where you're running the LLR program manually and checking for primes). We may never reach that point but there are plenty of projects out there that allow you to do this. One in particular is the Prime Sierpinski Project. While PrimeGrid offers the BOINC side, they still offer the traditional side. If anyone is interested in this, please visit the following:

Getting started/Welcome
LLR:- Pick A Range

Basically, there are three methods:

* PrimeGrid BOINC - mostly automated (you still have to download and install BOINC) :)
* LLRNet - semi automated
* Manual testing - running primality programs manually

The primality program that's mostly used is LLR by Jean Penné. This is what PrimeGrid and LLRNet uses. However, there are many others that you can use manually such as PFGW, PRP, Proth.exe, Phrot, etc. Each one offers it's own specialty with LLR being the most general program.

For sieving, there's no "semi - automated" method. It's either BOINC or manual. However, like primality programs, there are several sieving programs for manual use.

Hopefully some day we'll have a resource section that explains all this. Happy Crunching and Good Luck finding primes! and factors too...by whichever method chosen. :)

Would it be an idea to create a sieving leader board as an extra incentive for sieving, in contrast to the top prime finders?

Yes, this would be very nice. It's on the todo list. Until then, please see the following:

To give everyone an idea of how much sieving needs to be done for 321 and PPS sieves, here are some details.

321 Sieve
We are almost at n=4M for the 321 +1 form. Once n=5M is reached, we'll begin testing on the 5M-25M file. n=4M to 5M will take a few months so we still have some time. However, "optimal" sieve depth for n>5M was approximately 850T. We'll need to sieve much further than this as most of our testing has a top bound of n=25M.

Our first goal is 1P (1000T). In order to get there in 1 month, we need 178 full time cores sieving; in 2 months, we need 89 full time cores; in 3 months, we need 60 full time cores; in 4 months, we need 45 full time cores. Anything longer than 4 months is bad as we anticipate completion of LLR up to n=5M by then.

PPS Sieve
PPS LLR testing has already begun. For n up to 5M, "optimal" sieve depth is approximately 850T. We need to reach this as soon as possible. In order to get there in 1 month, we need 4300 full time cores; in 2 months, we need 2150; in 3 months, we need 1435; in 4 months, we need 1076; in 5 months, 861; in 6 months, 717.

As you can see, there's plenty of sieving to be done. To join any of these efforts please visit the following links for more details:

A good thing about manual and semi-manual wu's is that it can be runned from a memory stick and that it can run form a computer without administrator-rights,
I run those semi-manual LLR applications at school and with one small and one big prime number as result.

UPDATE: 16 December 2008

1. PPS Sieve (p=281T) end of year goal 300T
2. 321 Sieve (p=1200T)
3. PSP Sieve (p=17.41P)

Sieving continues to be a priority. However, we are making excellent progress. The sieves are still ranked above in order of where we need the most help.

Thank you for all the help. Please continue to spread the word about 64 bit sieving. The more the merrier! :)

It may be a little late to ask this, but could the other two sieve projects, PPS and 321, be included as options in the upcoming Winter Solstice Challenge?

Seeing as how you need more people on the other two projects, it doesn't make sense to me that the challenge focuses on only PSP.

PPS Sieve is only for 64 bit clients and available upon request, 321 sieve is an extra-boinc, semi-manual task.

Both projects can provide Cobblestones. I suspect that 321 sieve may not be practical; ranges may take too long to run. But why not include PPS sievers?

I have access to a computer that I can only occasionally run 64-bit Linux on. The rest of the time it's 32-bit Windows. I'll be running a 64-bit sieve there for the next 3-4 days, and probably very little thereafter. If PPS was included in the challenge, I'd run that; otherwise, I probably won't for at least 2-3 months (until I upgrade another computer to 64-bit.)

PPS Sieve would be only for a limited numbers of users.
Not that there is only 64-bit version as Benva pointed out, but is memory demanding (up to 400MB at peak). Large sieve file needs to be downloaded as well.

It may be still interesting to run a "Sieving festival" challenge.

I think it´s not a good idea to mix different projects as this would surely end in an endless discussion about credit parity ...

Hi.
I'd love to participate also in other sieving attempts than PPS. However, despite my settings on "PrimeGrid preferences" which are:

AP26 Search: no

321 Prime Search (LLR): no
Cullen Prime Search (LLR): no
Prime Sierpinski Problem (LLR): no
Proth Prime Search (LLR): no
Twin Prime Search (LLR): no
Woodall Prime Search (LLR): no

321 Prime Search (Sieve): yes
Cullen/Woodall Prime Search (Sieve): yes
Prime Sierpinski Problem (Sieve): yes
Proth Prime Search (Sieve): yes

Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work: no

I keep getting this:
PrimeGrid 25.05.2009 21:20:33 Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.
PrimeGrid 25.05.2009 21:20:33 Requesting new tasks
PrimeGrid 25.05.2009 21:20:38 Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
PrimeGrid 25.05.2009 21:20:38 Message from server: No work sent
PrimeGrid 25.05.2009 21:20:38 Message from server: No work is available for Cullen/Woodall Prime Search (Sieve)
PrimeGrid 25.05.2009 21:20:38 Message from server: No work is available for Proth Prime Search (Sieve)
PrimeGrid 25.05.2009 21:20:38 Message from server: No work available for the applications you have selected. Please check your settings on the web site.
on this machine (CC 6.6.28), while others (CC 6.5.0) just silently download only PPS work.
I haven't been able to figure out why this is happening, so far, so any ideas are welcome.

The most obvious place to check would be your disk space settings.

Thanks for the tip.
I checked and I have 10G free for BOINC of which less than 1G is currently used, on a ~1T partition (that 6.6.28 host, others also have 10G free / 1G used for BOINC on a bit smaller partitions), so I guess disk space is not an issue and would persume that it would anyway be mentioned in server messages if it woud be the culprit.
Anything else I should check?

Updated first post. I placed the previous stats under History at the bottom of the post. It's nice to be able to look back and see how much work was done. In just 1 1/2 months, we have seen tremendous progress in ALL sieves. GREAT work everyone!!! :)

With the quick work Puzzle-Peter and everyone else made of the Twin Prime Search sieve, an update was necessary. The first post has been updated. The new priority is the Proth Prime Search Extended Sieve (PPSE).

Requirements for PPSE sieve are:

- this is a manual effort
- 64 bit OS machine...preferably Linux
- preferably quad core (best suited for Q6600 and up)
- at least 2GB RAM on quad core

The current sieve file is:
ppse_25TE0 (1.21GB, 255MB zipped in 7z)

WARNING: The PPSE sieve has a high memory usage at startup while the sieve file is loading. You may have to wait a few minutes before sieving starts. 500MB/core is needed during this time. Afterwards, once the sieve begins, memory needs are greatly reduced.

If interested, please PM me or Lennart.

Another 1/2 month of tremendous progress in ALL sieves. GREAT work everyone!!! :)

p.s. When the factorial sieve reaches 500G, the factorial prime search will begin in PRPNet.

Top Sieve Priority Update

The first post has been updated. The top sieve priority remains the Proth Prime Search Extended Sieve (PPSE). It has even been elevated to a higher need.

All the sieves are making good progress...even PPSE. However, PPSE needs quite a substantial boost in order to keep the PPSE LLR going. Please consider helping out with PPSE Sieve if you have the appropriate resources.

How high is the priority of GCW Sieve?

Since we have basically 7M-10M still to LLR, the overall sieve is not a main focus right now. However, prepping the manual sieve for entry into BOINC has a moderate priority. Getting it to 25G+ would be nice.

John

[EDIT] Scrap the above, CW sieve has gone BOINC. See this post.

Now that we have reached 1T on the Primorial Sieve, could you give us an idea what the 'reassess for optimal' will mean in this case?

I believe the manual sieve to get to this stage was quite labourious with a relatively low number of factors eliminated. If that is the case, does it mean that actual primality checking will be just as effective as continuing the sieving?

Thanks and please excuse me if I'm showing my ignorance here.

Now that we have reached 1T on the Primorial Sieve, could you give us an idea what the 'reassess for optimal' will mean in this case?

It means we still have a long ways to go. :)

Using a Q6600 @2.4GHz, we did some primality timings at n=8M, 4M, and 1M. We also did some sieve timings at 1T. Here are the results:

n=8M; 20 days
n=4M; 4 days
n=1M; 4 hours

At 1T, ~1hr per factor

The sieve file is for n<10M. Therefore, we can officially consider this a long term sieve, similar to 321, PSP, and Cullen/Woodall.

It's good to remember that the main goal of the search is to find the next Primorial prime. The last one was found 20 September 2001.

Top Sieve Priority Update

The top sieve priority remains the Proth Prime Search Extended Sieve (PPSE). For the next two weeks, a 10% credit bonus will be applied. For anyone wishing to claim their PSA badge or increase to the next level, now's the time to seize the opportunity.

This is a manual effort!

Requirements for the PPSE sieve are:

- 64 bit OS machine
- best suited for Linux
- preferably quad core (best suited for Q6600 and up)
- at least 2GB RAM on quad core

The current sieve file is:

- ppse_37TE1 (1.22GB, 333MB zip, 255MB 7z)

WARNING: The PPSE sieve is a "monster" sieve. It has a high memory usage at startup while the sieve file is loading. You may have to wait a few minutes before sieving starts. 500MB/core is needed during this time. Afterwards, once the sieve begins, memory needs are greatly reduced.

If interested, please PM me or Lennart. Please reference the PPSE sieve. This is not the PPS sieve which is already in BOINC. This is the Project Staging Area sieve for Proth Prime Search Extended (1200<k<10000)

Top Sieve Priority Update

The top sieve priority remains the Proth Prime Search Extended Sieve (PPSE). For anyone wishing to claim their PSA badge or increase to the next level, now's the time to seize the opportunity.

There has been a MAJOR update to the PPSE sieve. Ken_g6 has provided ppsieve which improves the efficiency of the sieve by a factor of 6!!! That's right, it's 6 times faster!!! Within a day of switching over to ppsieve, we reached our third goal of 50T. We are now on our way to 100T & beyond and still need a lot of help. A bonus with ppsieve is that it's much easier for additional OS/CPU's to help. Even 32 bit machines can contribute now. Below are the updated requirements:

- This is STILL a manual effort!
- 32 & 64 bit CPU's can participate
- Linux & Windows (even Windows users can use the -t switch for multicore)
- at least 2GB RAM

The current sieve file is:

- ppse_37TE1 (1.22GB, 333MB zip, 255MB 7z)

WARNING: The PPSE sieve is a "monster" sieve. It has a high memory usage for the ENTIRE sieve time. You may have to wait a few minutes before sieving starts.

If interested, PM me or Lennart. Please reference the PPSE sieve. This is not the PPS sieve which is already in BOINC. This is the Project Staging Area sieve for Proth Prime Search Extended (1200<k<10000).

We STILL need another 15-20 Win64 multi-core (2, 4, 8+) machines to participate in a special manual sieve. It's only for about 8-10 days. If you are interested, please PM me.

Hi John

Is this for GFN Sieve? From what I can see it's only available for Windows and 64-bit obviously has an advantage.

Would it not be an idea to use your admin rights to see who has the appropriate machines and pm them for assistance?

S.O.S.

It's time to upgrade the priority of the CW sieve. Not that we are LLRing more and need a deeper file...it's just that we need to drain the current buffer (you can see it on the front page).

These WU's were accidentally generated with a 2 day deadline. We were hoping that we could crunch through these faster than we are with internal resources. So much for hoping. :(

It's not a critical priority but it sure would be nice to get rid of this headache. Therefore, we are asking anyone with 64 bit Linux to please consider running the Cullen/Woodall Sieve for the next week or so or until the buffer reaches 0. PrimeGrid preferences

NOTE: Windows 64 users are welcomed but beware of a massive slowdown when run on multicore. We have yet to determine the issue. If you have Win64 and wish to post your CPU specs and whether or not it is affected by the slowdown, please do so in this thread.

Once the buffer reaches 0, new WU's will be generated with the normal 7 day deadline...and the headache will be resolved. :)

Thank you!

The S.O.S has been very successful!!! In just over 2 weeks the queue has dropped from over 50K to just over 10K. Well done everyone!

In another 2-3 days we'll hopefully see a zero queue. Well, we'll refill before it reaches zero but I'll post back here at that time to cancel the S.O.S.

p.s. We'll put in proper deadlines this time. :)

Success!!!

The CW sieve has been rescued from the 2 day deadline tragedy. It is now back to 7 days. The S.O.S. has officially been recalled. Thank you to all who helped bring down the buffer. Perfect timing to be ready for the Winter Solstice Challenge. Good Luck!

Can we get an update on the priorities, I know that significant progress has been made in PPSE, and want to know where to direct my attention. I am sure that others may be wondering the same thing.

Top Sieve Priority Update

Now that the S.O.S has been recalled for the CW Sieve, focus can return to the top priorities.

The top sieve priorities are the Proth Prime Search Extended Sieve (PPSE) and the Generalized Fermat Number Sieve (GFN). For anyone wishing to claim their PSA badge or increase to the next level, these are the sieves to take advantage of.

PPSE Sieve
This sieve received a major boost two months ago from Ken_g6's ppsieve which improved the efficiency of the overall sieve by a factor of 6!!! Credit has since been scaled back but it is still well above average. :) Requirements are:

- This is a manual effort!
- 32 & 64 bit CPU's can participate
- Linux & Windows (even Windows users can use the -t switch for multicore)
- at least 2GB RAM

The current sieve file is: ppse_50TE1 (1.2GB; 245MB 7z)

WARNING: The PPSE sieve is a "monster" sieve. It has a high memory usage for the ENTIRE sieve time. You may have to wait a few minutes before sieving starts.

GFN Sieve
This sieve is a speciality sieve and requires much more intervention then the other sieves. Therefore, extra credit helps compensate for this. Requirements are:

- this is a manual effort
- 64 bit Windows
- recommended RAM: 4GB for QuadCore and 6GB for i7
- minimum quad core

If interested, PM me or Lennart. Please reference the PPSE sieve or GFN sieve.

Is there no way that you can deliver these apps VIA BOINC ?

I would like to participate more in these but don't like to have to run things outside BOINC. I guess I am just real lazy that way.

We'd like to; however, it's just not realistic. The PPSE sieve file is 1.2GB and even with BOINC compression, it would be quite demanding to download. The PPS sieve file is 250MB and that project is offered by request only so the downloads can be limited.

As for GFN, there's no command line version of the app. Therefore, at this time it's not possible to implement in BOINC.

Top Sieve Priority Update

With the addition of the TRP (Sieve) to PrimeGrid, sieving priority has changed for the short term. We will be starting LLR soon and want to decrease the sieve file as much as fast as possible.

We are currently at about 600T with an initial goal of 1P and an intermediate goal of 2.5P. Therefore, until 1P is reached, TRP (Sieve) will be the new HIGH priority.

To help out, please select the The Riesel Problem (Sieve) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section.

After 1P is reached, we'll review all the projects again and create a new priority list.

Does a high priority means higher scores?

Sorry, but no. We encourage everyone to crunch whatever they like. These priorities are only provided for participants who are looking for where the most help is needed at this time.

OK, but not good. :)

If help is needed, then I again turn on TRP.

You can look at your BOINC files and find out. (On XP, they are under Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC)

Under projects you should see a file for TRP_sieve_xxxxx_cmd, open that in a text editor, and you can see the current sieve range. On my current tests, the range is just below 0.8P. It's been running for a while now, so the server is probably handing out tests just above 0.8P by now.

Obviously, you have to have a TRP_sieve test in your Task queue for this to work.

Can we get an update on the top post perhaps? I think thing have changed a bit since July 2009, and its cumbersome to scroll thru the entire list to find the most recent update. Just a suggestion.

Happy crunching!

Top Sieve Priority Update

The Top Sieve Priorities thread has been updated.

A new sieve has been added called the Riesel Sieve Project. It will eventually be combined with the Proth Prime Search (Sieve). This combination is possible through the use of Geoff Reynolds/Ken Brazier's tpsieve which basically allows the sieving of both forms for the same time it takes to sieve a single form.

RSP and PPS sieves are available for the following:

    Linux 32 & 64 bit; CUDA2.3 32 & 64 bit; OpenCL 32 & 64 bit*
    Windows 32 & 64 bit; CUDA2.3 32 bit (will run on 64 bit); OpenCL 32 bit (will run on 64 bit)
    Mac CUDA2.3 32 & 64 bit

OpenCL is available in the manual sieve. It is also available through BOINC by using app_info.

GPU vs. CPU Sieving

PrimeGrid has two sieves which can utilize the GPU. The PPS (Sieve) in BOINC and the RSP (Sieve) in the PSA. The other sieve projects do not lend themselves to GPU sieving at this time.

However, with PPS and RSP, the GPU has made substantial inroads and now dominates the top speeds. It's a good time to put those GPU's to work and earn some badges. :) Below are sample time comparisons:

Sample times for 100G range with rsp2M w/ppsieve v0.2.1a
110 hours 2.4 GHz Core2Duo T7700 -t2 (250K p/sec)
70 hours 2.4 GHz Q6600 -t4 (400K p/sec)
43 hours 2.8 GHz Q9550 -t4 Ubuntu64 (650k p/sec)
37 hours 2.8 GHz i7 Q720 -t4 x64 (750K p/sec)

35 hours GTS 250 (780K p/sec)
28 hours 3.85 GHz i7 975 -t8 (980K p/sec)
26 hours 9800 GT (1.07M p/sec)
23 hours ATI HD4770 @ 820 MHz/840 MHz (1.225M p/sec)
20 hours ATI HD4870@750/900 (1.4M p/sec)

8.8 hours GTX 460 @ 800/1600/2000 (3.14M p/sec)

Please see the Top Sieve Priorities thread for more details on how to participate.

There are other GPU manufacturers beside Nvidea. GPU Sieving implying Nvidea is annoying. Don't discriminate ATI, Intel et al GPUs - my wish would be the next GPU application only for ATI.

There are other GPU manufacturers beside Nvidea. GPU Sieving implying Nvidea is annoying. Don't discriminate ATI, Intel et al GPUs - my wish would be the next GPU application only for ATI.

There is an OpenCL version of ppsieve for ATI. You can use it for the manual RSP and - via app_info.xml - for the BOINC PPS (Sieve).

As pschoefer points out, there is an OpenCL version of ppsieve available for ATI. Also, if you review the bottom of this post (Top Sieve Priority Update), you'll see additional references to ATI.

As ATI users provide timing information, I'll include them to the sample times chart in the GPU vs. CPU Sieving post.

And now the release of ppsieve-0.2.2

This latest release is for CUDA only. However, CPU and ATI version are being updated. As you can see, there are substantial speed gains with the 0.2.2 release. This benefits CUDA devices the most, with expected CPU and ATI gains to be marginal.

If you have a GPU, please consider contributing to the Riesel Sieve Project (RSP). Currently, it's the most effective way to earn your PSA badge. Please see the Top Sieve Priorities thread for more details on how to participate.

EDIT: The BOINC ppsieve app will be updated next week. Until then, check out RSP.

For information on this latest release, please see this post

Can you tell me what the top sieve priorities are for CPU? I think I can use my cpu better than crunching PPS and RSP sieve workunits that are processed much faster with a GPU.

In BOINC, on the 321 and TRP sieves remain CPU only. The 321 sieve will be ending in the next 2-3 months which will leave only TRP left.

Top Sieve Priority Update

Please consider helping out with the PPS (Sieve) for the next few days. We are reprocessing some lower P work and need to clear it all out before the upcoming "Year of the Rabbit" Challenge 3-6 Feb.

The Top Sieve Priorities page has been updated.

321 Sieve still appears under my PrimeGrid preferences as an option but of course there is no work for that any longer.
Perhaps a note to say no work is available or perhaps it could be disabled/removed.
Just a suggestion.

Top Sieve Priority Update

The Top Sieve Priorities page has been updated.

There are no changes to priorities. However, status and descriptions of a few sieves have been updated.

Top Sieve Priority Update

The Top Sieve Priorities page has been updated. The top manual sieve priority is the GFN (Sieve). If interested, register at the PST Forum to find out more details and to reserve work. PSA credit is available.

GFN Prime Search Sieving

This sieve supports the GFN Prime Search located in PRPNet. Ports currently available for PRPing are:

port 12005: GFN32768
port 12003: GFN65536
port 11002: GFN262144
port 11001: GFN524288

Sieving is active for the following

N = 1048576
N = 2097152
N = 4194304

This sieve uses David Underbakke's AthGfn64 sieve program (currently available only for Windows 64 bit). It is GUI based and the process is straight forward. Reservations are open in the PST forum. You'll need to register for access.

If you are interested, check out the instructions. PSA credit is available.

The effort at N = 4194304 has the potential to produce the World's Largest Prime.

Here's an idea of the resources needed for these sieves:

A 2600k host with no HT can complete 2.25P/day each on 4 cores. That's 9P/day for 1 host. Sieve depth goals for the following are:

N = 1048576; p=4612P
N = 2097152; p=6918P
N = 4194304; p=9223P

N = 1048576 needs 18 2600k hosts to complete in 30 days
or 9 in 60 days OR 5 in 90 days

N = 2097152 needs 26 2600k hosts to complete in 30 days
or 13 in 60 days OR 7 in 90 days

N = 4194304 needs 35 2600k hosts to complete in 30 days
or 18 in 60 days OR 9 in 90 days

So with a three month window, 21 hosts could complete ALL 3 sieves. Pushing it out to six months would only require 11 hosts.

Therefore, it's not unrealistic to think that we can complete these sieves in a relatively short time span. Please spread the word...the more the merrier...and, after-all, it is the holiday season!!! :)
