So, first, I would advise not to post on the main board. It will likely start an unpleasant exchange and get moderated, so no reason to waste time.
My own view is it is your money, spend it how you want...period!
As to an explanation of why some things are "green" and others are not, that is a really complex discussion about social relationships, beliefs, norms, and informal sanctioning (throw in some collective behavior theory as well if you like).
But I think you can boil down the TSC vs. crypto mining difference to one fundamental thing:
1) TSC is used to support "scientific" discovery (one can debate the scientific merit of a given project, but that is the basic premise of BOINC overall), and thus, the energy usage is "worth it" in some way as it helps move knowledge/society/well-being/etc. forward.
2) Crypto is used to support personal enrichment, and thus, is not "green" because it is just energy usage for oneself.
I say the above without moral judgement, but as a mere explanation for why many will see those uses differently. Again, it is your own money, use it as you wish.
p.s. - I am not sure it is accurate that I in general use many TSC instances most of the time. For the SGS challenge, I used 430, which was by far the most I have ever used. In many challenges (e.g., the upcoming next two long work unit ones), I use no TSC instances at all. 95% to 99% of the non-cloud computing that I utilize on BOINC would be on 24/7 anyway, so it follows the original intent of BOINC to not waste that part of the energy being used.
