Gents,
We are getting close to this year's TdP marathon.
Some testing from yesterday involving my i7 8700k suggests that two physical cores per GFN16 task provides optimal CPU throughput (ie maximum units per unit of time). As a result, I have reset all of my preferences to such a scenario and which will kick in once current units complete.
Best of luck to everyone! |

I'd be surprised if 2 cores per task is better than 1 per task with affinity setting. I'm doing testing on my 2nd system right now so I'll add that in to make sure. I didn't even bother to test it on my main system. |

GFN16 may be VERY highly dependent on CPU for optimal settings. On my old Sandy Bridge i7 laptop (4 cores/8 threads, 6MB cache) there is no difference between single and two-core throughput, but 4-core is definitely slower. On an i5-4570s, 2-core is the best, but it is slower than the Sandy Bridge laptop i7 despite having a faster clock (also has 6MB cache) regardless of the number of threads used..
You will definitely need to test the GFN16 CPU stuff widely to see your best results. |

Rough numbers for 11700k 125W power limit, HT on, 50% cores in BOINC. GPU also in use.
2t 490s (705 per day)
2t+A 450s (768 per day)
1t 820s (843 per day)
1t+A 720s (960 per day)
"+A" means I set affinity to all CPU odd threads only. In no scenario does 2t give more throughput than 1t.
Note I did mess up slightly, in that I didn't allow a core/thread for the GPU when I set affinity for testing so far. I think this may reduce GPU times, maybe also CPU, so CPU times may be worse than ideal and there is even more potential for improvement with affinity. I'm debating if I want to run a GPU. I have an Arc A380 in there at the moment and it isn't great at potential 262 units per day if I resolve the feeding contention. Maybe time to get screwdriver out and put 2070 back in just for TdP. |

My reasoning for believing that 1t is best in most well configured cases is that the data size per task is only 0.5MB. Reference below. There is talk about read only data in addition to that, but I never figured it out. For gwnum based software it seems like it can simply be ignored when considering optimal running. I don't know how different genefer is in how it works.
https://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=8168&nowrap=true#119783
Edit: assuming that 10MB fixed overhead is always there, is required, and can be shared between tasks (I have a vague recollection that might be the case but I don't know for sure), it could explain why 2t could work better on lower core count systems. Typical Intel is 2MB/core, with many exceptions so don't take it as absolute. At 8 core or above, that's 16MB cache. Less 10MB leaving 6MB free, more than enough for 8 tasks. At 6 cores we're at 12MB, leaving 2MB for 4 tasks. Not enough for 6x1t. Quads just don't have enough full stop, and may then be limited by memory bandwidth.
Consider the above something that needs to be tested. I have no idea if genefer of today is at all like the one mentioned in that thread from over 4 years ago.
Edit 2: I've asked in Generalized Fermat Prime Search forum so hopefully Yves will see it and respond. |

The current values are
GFN-16: 1.19 MB
GFN-17: 2.38 MB
GFN-18: 5.07 MB
GFN-19: 10.1 MB
GFN-20: 20.3 MB
GFN-21: 40.5 MB
GFN-22: 40.5 MB
Data are not shared between tasks.
https://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=10146&nowrap=true#159853
Data from Yves. It blows my previous theory out of the water but I'm not sure what to make of it yet! |

Okay, here are some initial CPU results for GFN16 across some different architectures:
i7-2670QM (AVX)
4x1 tasks - 3375 seconds (~105 units per day)
2x2 tasks - 1665 seconds (~105 units per day)
i5-4570s (FMA)
4x1 tasks - ~3400 seconds (~105 units per day)
2x2 tasks - ~3400 seconds (~55 units per day) *may be something wrong with this box*
i7-4790 (FMA)
4x1 tasks - ~1500 seconds (~230 units per day)
2x2 tasks - ~750 seconds (~230 units per day)
i7-8700 (FMA)
6x1 tasks - ~1230 seconds (~420 units per day)
3x2 tasks - ~790 seconds (~330 units per day)
EDIT: Here are some additional results
E5-2690 v2 (AVX)
5x2 tasks - ~1260 seconds (~345 units per day)
10x1 tasks -~2500 seconds (~345 units per day)
E5-2699 v3 (FMA)
9x2 tasks - ~870 seconds (~900 units per day)
18x1 tasks - ~1630 seconds (~950 units per day)
Results so far suggest that on Haswell and earlier, 1 or 2 threaded yields little if any difference in throughput. Later hardware seems to be better on 1 thread. I still need to test on some skylake systems to see if Haswell is the dividing line or not...more to come. |

OS Win 10
CPU AMD Ryzen 7 5700X ( 4 GHz)
8*1 task ( HT disabled) 745 seconds = 927 WU per day
4*2 task ( HT disabled) 440 seconds = 785 WU per day
So combination 8*1 is clear winner!( in my case)
Will look at Linux boxes...

Well, completed all my testing for GFN16 and overall here are my conclusions (for Intel CPUs, I don't have any AMD to test currently)...
1) Sky Lake and newer CPUs - run single threaded for best throughput. Advantage over 2 threads is sometimes modest, but consistent.
2) Haswell systems are usually not notably different running 1 or 2 threads, but sometimes do a little better on throughput with 1 thread. So run single threaded to be safe (but it won't be substantially different than running 2 threaded if you want more quickly completed work).
3) Ivy Bridge and older (and yes, I did have a pre-AVX system to test on) makes so little difference between 1 vs. 2 threads that it really does not matter which configuration you choose.
4) GPUs are still king! ...err...not exactly. A W-2125 Xeon (Sky Lake generation, 4c/8t with AVX512) running on all 8 single threads has throughput that is basically the same as an RTX 2070 or RTX 3060. CPUs can make some substantial contributions to your TdP prime hunt!
Best of luck to everyone! Go AtP!!!

Scott is absolutely killing it ... check out the number of primes he nailed just this morning?!
@Scott: what buffer size are you using? I have mine set to 0.1 days + 0.1 days and I am wondering whether to go after a larger consecutive cache (ex 0.5 days + 0.5 days) so as to hopefully have a greater possibility of having something fall into my larger sequence/cache. |

Hello everyone!
I thought I would fire up my OLD desktop and crunch a few for TdP.
I was looking at a completed task and it had a red "warning" on it.
"Completed, waiting for validation [Proof task] WARNING!"
Is my computer causing errors or something?
Thanks,
Brook

If it is only rarely doing it, then it is probably nothing. If you see a few of these to lots, it means there is a hardware issue (either real failure imminent or something like heat, etc.).
In either case, the software error detection stuff (relatively new overall) keeps these from generating errors in the work for the most part.
...and welcome back!

It's never too late.
mattozan just got his badge.
Congrats, mattozan !
Cheers!
Truth be told, this was a "false start mistake." Looks like I somehow made an AM/PM error when scheduling my TSC instances for Mountain Stage. They kicked off at NOON, not MIDNIGHT today, and promptly found a prime two hours later.
Hoping to repeat my luck tomorrow! 🤞

Lots of ratties on the TdP board now! Congratulations to all!
Two interesting things coming up...
1) AtP needs just 4 more primes to reach 100 as a team for the TdP!
and
2) Our dear Lord Rat has just added his own contribution to AtP's TdP finds! Congratulations!
...also, isn't it interesting how similar AtP is to TdP. Must be why we do so well in this event. :P

My first reportable prime in many years. I missed out by a few seconds in the 2021 TdP but none before that for about 10 years. |

Au contraire. I stand out as the least successful.
By the way I proposed some time ago that at the next ordinary challenge that at least some of us run our computers for Scott's benefit. He has not I think ever come first and it'd be some nice PR if one of us did. Glad to hear thoughts preferably in private re that. |

Thanks, and it's nice to be back!
I took time off when it was getting busy at work, then one month before my 20 year work anniversary, I got let go because of the pandemic slow down. So now I'm unemployed/retired.
Once TdP is over i'm going to set the old clunker PC to long tasks and forget about it. Maybe strike it prime. :) |

Come and chat anyway.
I stopped "work" in my early 50s. I variously describe myself as househusband, kept man, unemployed, retired, private investor, writer and of independent means depending on who is asking and get a wide range of reactions. |

I think I was overdue one. I have done nearly 200k GFN tasks for more than 30M credit and that one is the 4th prime. |

I haven't had a day job for a few years. It worked out as well as it could, since I had worked with my former employers for a very long time and the redundancy package means I don't have any short term financial worries. One thing that did surprise me was when I phoned around to update/renew insurance. Apparently they don't classify me as unemployed, as I'm not actively seeking work. The insurance term for my situation is "living on independent means".
Still working out exactly what to do with the rest of my life. I really don't fancy another office job, or more specifically, the office politics that come with it. If I did, I'd have my old problem of loads of money, no free time. I'm at the awkward age where I'm not close enough to retirement to just do it early, but I'm on the older side so starting something new being employed by someone else could be challenging. Be my own boss? Maybe, if I can just figure out what someone would pay me for! |
|

I consider it a verry personnal matter.
I hope you find out whatever fits you best.
But I can assure you that if you're married, being your own boss is somewhat of a challenge :)

Only you can decide but as a piece of UK-centric advice do look into paying Class 2 or 3 NI. You can thank me later.
For general info in addition to income tax UK residents pay a further tax called NI which goes toward paying for a State Pension. For many people it is fair old wedge but if you are unemployed or self-employed with low profits it is very cheap. |

I just checked up on it. Gov website says I could get up to £185.15 a week, but at my current contributions it is £171.94 a week. To make up that gap it says I need 3 more paying years before I get state pension (under current rules anyway). Right now I'd fall into class 3 if I wanted to make those contributions, about £800 a year. Doesn't sound like I need to make that decision quickly. And not to be too negative, life expectancy on the male side of my family isn't great. Both my dad and brother died from cancer in their 60's. I see pensions as a "just in case" rather than something I'd expect to rely on. Been meaning to revisit my private ones some time but it isn't exactly the most fun job to do unless really needed. |

Congrats, Scott for getting 100 primes in the 2023 TdP !
Too bad that the regular 2023 P badge disappeared for you (100 is too much :) ).
Let's wait until admis figure out what to do about it.
Edit: Michael Goetz already fixed it.

Oh Lord , I will always support you if you support me :)
Something that really excites me about this team is that no one makes a difference between us. Whether we have 1 or 100 computers,
whether we are from one country or another, we are all the same.
Today, that is such a rarity. Maybe we are all "members" of an old generation that is slowly dying out...

Dig one post. Tie the string to it and the other to Lord Rat. Allow to roam free for a few days and dig the posts along the outer edge of the worn grassy area.
