Welcome to the Great Internet Fermat Prime Search Challenge
The ninth and final challenge of the 2022 Series will be a 10-day sprint to the end of the year. Can we find a GFN-DYFL prime and end GIMPS's decades-long world record streak?? The challenge will be offered on the DYFL, GFN-21, and GFN-22 applications, beginning 07 December 05:00 UTC and ending 17 December 05:00 UTC.
From my view, PrimeGrid and the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) have always been friendly rivals. GIMPS is the O.G., beginning in 1996 nearly a decade before us, and their primes have held the title of "World's Largest Known" for nearly as long. But they seldom venture outside of the familiar, predictable(*) world of Mersenne primes -- that is, prime numbers of the form 2ᴺ-1. This shall be their downfall. With the flexibility of the BOINC platform and the blazing speed of the Genefer GPU platform, it is simply a matter of time before a Generalized Fermat Prime tops the T5K!
Of course, PrimeGrid [or the Great Internet Fermat Prime Search (GIFPS), as I've unilaterally decided we're calling ourselves for this month] is not nearly as well known, but what we lack in humanpower we make up for in cold, hard metal! GIMPS might have every CPU at the University of Central Missouri, but here at GIFPS we still have close to TWICE the computing power (as of writing, 3995 TeraFLOP/s vs 2522 TeraFLOP/s)! Do Y'all Feel Lucky? Cause I sure do!
To participate in the challenge:
- Wait until the challenge timeframe starts (or set your BOINC Client download schedule accordingly), as tasks issued before the challenge will not count.
- In your PrimeGrid preferences section, select only the Do You Feel Lucky? (Genefer World Record Attempt), Generalized Fermat Prime Search (n=21), and Generalized Fermat Prime Search (n=22) projects.
Important reminders:
- These subprojects require a lot of disk space; ~1.2GB for GFN-21, and ~2.5GB for GFN-22 and DYFL. Your tasks will immediately fail if you don't have enough available storage.
- DYFL tasks are NOT supported for CPU, they are too big. (GFN-21 and GFN-22 are fine.)
- Multi-threading is REQUIRED for GFN-21 and GFN-22. (Must allocate at least 4 threads per task in your PrimeGrid preferences. See instructions below.)
- The deadline for these WUs is longer than 10 days, so make sure your computer is able to return the WUs within the challenge time-frame. Only tasks issued AFTER the start time and returned BEFORE the finish time will be counted.
- At the Conclusion of the Challenge: We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their tasks instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING. ABORTING tasks allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING tasks causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until tasks expire to send them out to be completed. Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thanks <3
Let's talk about hardware:
Supported platforms: Windows, Linux, macOS.
CPU (GFN-21, GFN-22, DYFL): x86, x64, ARM-based Apple (via Rosetta2).
GPU (GFN-21, GFN-22, DYFL): Nvidia, AMD, Apple M1/M2, Intel Arc.
DYFL WU's are currently averaging 40 hours on GPU.
GFN-21 WU's are currently averaging 1 day on CPU and 8 hours on GPU.
GFN-22 WU's are currently averaging 2 days on CPU and 44 hours on GPU.
Older 4-core CPUs should be able to complete these tasks in 1 and 2 weeks respectively. For a general idea of how your GPU stacks up, you can have a look at the fastest GPUs list.
As with all number crunching, excessive heat can potentially cause permanent hardware failure. Please ensure your cooling system is sufficient. Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your CPU, and please see this post for tips on running GFN on your GPU successfully.
IMPORTANT: Overclocking -- including factory overclocking -- on Nvidia GPUs is very strongly discouraged. Even if your GPU can run other tasks without difficulty, it may be unable to run GFN tasks when overclocked.
On Multithreading:
- Your mileage may vary. Before the challenge starts, take some time and experiment and see what works best on your computer.
- If you have a CPU with hyperthreading or SMT, either turn off this feature in the BIOS, or set BOINC to use 50% of the processors.
- If you're using a GPU for other tasks, it may be beneficial to leave hyperthreading on in the BIOS and instead tell BOINC to use 50% of the CPU's. This will allow one of the hyperthreads to service the GPU.
- The new multi-threading system is now live. Click here to set the maximum number of threads. This will allow you to select multi-threading from the project preferences web page. No more app_config.xml. It works like this:
- In the preferences selection, there are selections for "max jobs" and "max cpus", similar to the settings in app_config.
- Unlike app_config, these two settings apply to ALL apps. You can't chose 1 thread for SGS and 4 for SoB. When you change apps, you need to change your multithreading settings if you want to run a different number of threads.
- There will be individual settings for each venue (location).
- This will eliminate the problem of BOINC downloading 1 task for every core.
- The hyperthreading control isn't possible at this time.
- The "max cpus" control will only apply to LLR apps. The "max jobs" control applies to all apps.
- Some people have observed that when using multithreaded LLR, hyperthreading is actually beneficial. We encourage you to experiment and see what works best for you.
Additional information:
Time zone converter:
The World Clock - Time Zone Converter
NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section at the very top, above the countdown clock.
Scoring Information
Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only tasks issued AFTER 07 December 05:00 UTC and received BEFORE 17 December 05:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will be using the same scoring method as we currently use for BOINC credits. A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.

GPU (GFN-21, GFN-22, DYFL): Nvidia, AMD, Apple M1/M2, Intel Arc (app_config.xml is required for Apple M1/M2 and Intel, please see this message for more information).
This message brings me to a posting in Better Multi-threading which is about LLR.
I don't think that's your intention.

app_config was required last year to allow multi-threading for CPU apps on Macs. That code is obsolete now and will cause failures.
version 4.01 will run without any app_config help at all.
M1 and M2 Macs will run CPU apps via rosetta without resorting to anonomous platform.
Applications for native M1 and M2 Macs are still under development. Stay tuned, as the old-timers say.
|
|
Forgot to say that app_config was also required last year for Mac GPUs to skip the benchmark and invoke the correct transform (OLC or OLC2). Also no longer valid.

If you have an M1/M2 Mac, definitely remove any app_info or app_config xml files you have relating to GFN!
Both the "native" CPU app and the GPU app have been tested and work in the development environment, there are "issues" around making the GPU app available on the preferences page (right now I simply select both Nvidia and AMD in dev and it works) and on sending the native app in place of the Intel one, but the project team is working on it and we hope they'll have it worked out and moved to production before challenge start. If they DO, then either will be available for 21 & 22 (GPU only for DYFL) - if they don't, then your Mac will still run CPU in emulation, it'll just be about 2-3x slower. (You could then technically use app_info to run the native app instead, but that's... not for the faint of heart... or terminal-challenged. I only succeed half the time, personally.)
My (very limited) testing seems to show that best throughput for GFN-21 is to run both a 4-thread CPU task and a GPU task on the "8" core basic M1. DO NOT use the "efficiency" cores! Set BOINC to use x% of available processors, whatever it takes to exclude those on your machine. (50% in my case.)
Also, the M1 Ultra's extra GPU cores really make a difference. The basic M1 on GPU is still around 48 hours for a GFN-21, while the Ultra (48 GPU cores) is more like 7-8. (With no CPU task running - still working on getting times for running both.) Basic M1 native CPU by itself is around 66 hours. (Emulated is 168+)
I will post an update here when I know the status in production. Everyone has worked really hard to get the Mac native and GPU stuff working; as a Mac-head, my thanks to all of the project staff! (Especially James, who figured out how to compile the thing in spite of Apple. ;)

Per Stream:
Mac Mx CPU native application is in production for GFN-17 through GFN-22.
GFN-16 is too close to cutoff for CPU software limit - ARM code generates too many roundoff errors.
I don't know about the GPU app yet.
Edit: Runtime for the emulated GFN-21 (just finished one) on my M1 Mini was 6d 17h. BOINC estimates this one, native, at 3d 3h. So just over twice as fast!!

Great news!!!
Just in time for the challenge, native Apple M1/M2 CPU and GPU apps are available for the challenge projects. (Note that CPU apps are NOT available for DYFL.)
Also just in time for the challenge are brand new apps for Intel ARC GPUs.
No app_info or app_config setups are required for either of the new Apple or Intel hardware. Just go to the project preferences page and select the apps.
As with other GPUs, you have to select INTEL GPUs or APPLE GPUs at the top of the page as well as selecting the individual apps in the main section of the page.
Native Apple M1/M2 ARM CPU apps will be sent automatically to those computers. No action is necessary on your part.

Noticing odd differences in Genefer 21 v4.01 (OCLcudaGFN)
tasks times seem pretty consistent:
3070: around 27,000
3070ti: around 35,000
3080ti: around 38,000
I would assume just the opposite order. The 3070 should be the slowest.
for example on ww tasks: Wieferich and Wall-Sun-Sun v1.05 (opencl_nvidia_WW)
3070: 550
3070ti: 540
3080ti: 480
They are all on different versions of ubuntu (1804 vs 2004) and different nvidia drivers and different cpus.
I do have the power turned down on all but it doesn't still explain the differences versus ww tasks.
I'm just surprised at drastic difference in the GFN 21 project. I'm not sure if this has always been the case. I only noticed due to paying attention with the upcoming contest.
Is there something simple I could check or something obvious I'm missing here?

Wow 4080 : 7,500 sec...
Some 4090 overclocked versions like galaxy can be wery powerfull. Especially for "lucky" task's
Have we already some 4090 here on project? And times on tasks..

I sat out the last few challenges out of fear of missing an SR5 prime while the challenges were happening, but I am back at it now. Starting with some GFN22 tasks and then may scale back to GFN21.

If anyone is still using an app_config.xml to control Multithreading settings, note that last year's cmdline parameters won't work anymore. The new genefer version uses -t (or --nthreads) instead of -nt for the number of threads, and will error out after 5 minutes with the old -nt switch.

What? Nobody's returned a DYFL task yet? :)
Actually I expect 18.2 hours for a V100, and significantly less time for a 40x0.

Thanks for the times...
I will crank the power on the 3070ti and 3080ti... Disappointed such a drastic difference. I'm a big fan of the 3070FE I have. Two slots width with one power adapter.
Im ok with the 3070FE at power 140 getting 27000 versus the 22000. The other levels are horrible.
base power levels i use : (they are all on the same household circuit so need to watch levels )
3070: 140
3070ti: 140
3080ti: 160
I wonder since the 3070ti and 3080ti have DDR6X its that much more power hungry during GFN tasks unlike ww tasks which seems to be less power hungry.
nice 4080 time
again.thanks for the times for the different cards.

Thanks to Yves Gallot ...I just needed 80 more watts.
Estimating after about 10% on new tasks with new power levels :
3070: 140 : 27000 sec
3070ti: 180 : 25500 sec
3080ti: 200 : 24000 sec
I'm limited with the power but the above numbers are good for me until I find more power.
Thanks again. | |

You shouldn't need app_config for genefer anymore. The app config you listed does nothing you can't do from the preferences on the web page.

I need it with 2 computers. Without app_config, I need to change the variable manually for each server request... We aren't talking about gfn15 unit anymore, but we maybe should too : the softfware's name is no llonger "boinc client" but "boinc manager". I think happy camping is all about dynamic

Have you ever try to compute a gfn unit with a cpu? It works fine you know. I did 187th to geminids shower without any problem

You shouldn't need app_config for genefer anymore. The app config you listed does nothing you can't do from the preferences on the web page.
Depends on what you want to do.
I use it to specify the number of threads used and reserved because if those numbers differ I can't just do it from the PrimeGrid preferences page.
And I can setup everything in a way I can just change subprojects without having to care about the number of threads or tasks.

Wow 4080 : 7,500 sec...
Some 4090 overclocked versions like galaxy can be wery powerfull. Especially for "lucky" task's
Have we already some 4090 here on project? And times on tasks..
A RTX 4090 is participating in the challenge:
GFN-21: 6,000 seconds.
RTX 4090 under 400W now. Dropping slowly to see what it needs to complete tasks in ~28,000, which should still net 3 DYFL tasks per day.

From the day 3 stats of the current challenge,
"came back with some kind of error" / "have returned a successful result" (that's before validation, but there are almost no invalid or inconclusive results)
GFN-21: 1937 (29%) / 1375 (20%) = 1.41
GFN-22: 636 (24%) / 259 (10%) = 2.46
DYFL: 587 (23%) / 642 (25%) = 0.91
From the day 3 stats of the 12-2021 challenge,
(again before validation, but even without Gerbicz check, there weren't many invalids or inconclusives even on day 10)
GFN-21: 1819 (10%) / 2429 (14%) = 0.75
GFN-22: 378 (47%) / 136 (17%) = 2.78
DYFL: 891 (32%) / 500 (18%) = 1.78
Even though aborted tasks are not part of the "some kind of error" tasks, why are there so many error result reports, relative to successful result reports?
I suspect that's a FAQ which has been answered a hundred of times already. But I can't recall if, and where, I might have seen the answer in the past.
There was one error source which was new to this challenge: the syntax change of app_config.xml as discussed here in this thread. But this one change apparently didn't matter statistically.

Even though aborted tasks are not part of the "some kind of error" tasks, why are there so many error result reports, relative to successful result reports?
Few computers generate many errors. On fatal error, there is a delay before reporting to the host in order to slow down the error rate. The delay was one hour (genefer 3.x) and now is five minutes. Then the error rate of these computers is x12. A single faulty computer reports 864 errors in 3 days.
The ratio "came back with some kind of error" / "have returned a successful result" doesn't make sense because five minutes are compared to several hours.

All tasks are initially included in the results, immediately upon their return to the server, BEFORE validation. So the answer to your question is an emphatic yes.
However, should a task eventually be determined to be invalid, it will be removed from the challenge score.

As much i would like it to finish a GFN22 task in 71,303 sec, i believe my GTX 1660 would burst into flames and unwanted fireworks if it was the reality.
Send/receive duration is a lot more realistic at 220,985 sec.
Is this only my rig having a bad sense of time, or is this common after the GFN app upgrade?
EDIT - i see true time spent is 61 hrs+
260496^{2^22} + 1: proof file is generated, time = 61:11:44.

Boinc saves current task state, including wall-clock and CPU time spent, to the temporary file in slot directory. This file is written often and also often becomes corrupted after unlucky reboot if file system wasn't flushed to physical disk properly. In this case, Boinc will count elapsed times from zero again. It was seen many times with different types of task. In this task, I see no shutdown messages ("Boinc requested to quit" of similar) on first run, so I assume that it was a dirty restart.
Genefer, I think, also saves current elapsed time into checkpoint so it was able to recover it and report correct value in the end.

I had the best time, especially as a newby, for this particular challenge. I had issues early on, but this led to me trying to figure out how to get more tasks done -- a different kind of challenge :) Thanks to everyone involved, especially everyone on the backend for keeping all of this running so smoothly -- kudos!
Post-Challenge, I have some questions about a few things I ran into:
Where do I start in figuring out discrepancies? and errors? and strangeness?
I grabbed all of the info on each job validated and pending for this latest GIFPS Challenge. Primegrid says I have 53 tasks that completed processing, yet in my spreadsheet, I have 56. As tasks move to being validated, points are listed. Again, PG posted data vs. my spreadsheet, I've got enough points to move ahead one place.
For the errors: I got these on a laptop and think this correlates with moving my laptop, which automatically suspended the jobs via a setting for that in BOINC. Very worrying, since I'd been testing for ~3weeks beforehand and didn't notice the errors, and the errors were on DYFL and GFN22 jobs, that take around a couple of days each for this computer to process.
For strangeness, I checked this morning and had 1 pending job left. Checked this and it looked like it had already been validated by someone else, a long time after I was finished with the task and waiting for validation but is still in pending for me. Just checked now and it's still there . . .
Any advice/web pointers would be much appreciated 🙂

I was aware of that, but what is invalid, say, versus 'error'?

I was aware of that, but what is invalid, say, versus 'error'?
Invalid means that BOINC finished the task and uploaded a completed result, but when compared to the proof task became invalid because of some type of processing error. An error is anything that knows did not complete correctly.

Thanks for your insight! Do you happen to know if there is any way, going forward, to eliminate/reduce these invalid results?

The computer is a laptop. 8-thread GFN-21 on i5-9300H (4 cores) + DYFL on GeForce GTX 1660 Ti mobile => excessive heat => hardware failure.

The task was marked as invalid because it returned wrong result. It was certificate task, these types of tasks are returning some magic number which must match a secret value expected by server, thus confirming that all computations in the chain were correct. Your computer has returned unmatched value. Same task with same input data was sent to another user, and his result was correct. So it's a GPU hardware failure on your side. Most common reasons of these failures are overheating and overclocking (including factory overclocking). You'll not notice a slightly wrong color of one pixel on the screen, but one corrupted bit during calculations will ruin whole task.

Thank you for you and @Yves Gallot for your detailed responses. As far as I know this machine/GPU is not overclocked. I'm going to check further on what I can do to, at the very least, monitor CPU/GPU temperatures. As I've not seen this problem on my desktops or other laptop (however, this other laptop doesn't have a discrete GPU), I'm going to be strongly considering replacing this laptop with a desktop, where there are better methods to control temperature, replace/upgrade defective components, etc..
I do have to wonder, though, for the PC computing industry as a whole, how long we will be able to obtain desktops like this? It seems that all CPU vendors are leaning hard into their affordable products that are based on being in a laptop, or mini-desktop (e.g., Apple Mac mini) with no fans at all, power conservation as most important and no discrete GPU.
With the PC gaming market hovering around no growth, or even decline, it seems that, over time, we'll will be left with computers that are not going to be good for computation. And then, for much of the world, the smart phone has become their main computer, and AI and machine learning seem to be the focus of computation -- not sure how these will lend themselves to computation like finding prime numbers, especially when we are looking for larger and larger primes . . .
